Kathie sighed, “If you say so. I will tell Gloria to bring you some food in an hour. I will be back in the evening to check on you.”
“No.”
“No?” Kathie reiterated.
“I appreciate your concern but I just want to be alone today.”
“If you say so. But please pick up your call when I call you. If not, you are going to see me here.”
“And do not hesitate to call me if you need anything. Take care!”
Giving her hand a light squeeze, Kathie exited the room.
Victoria shut her eyes for a while the moment her friend was out of sight. And just as if her thoughts were trying to mock her, she began to have flashes of her nightstand with Oscar in her room which prompted her to open her eyes again. She wondered why she was so fertile with him that he had to leave a mark on her every time they had sex.
Amidst all the troubles in her mind and how heavy her heart was, Vicky still found a way to close her eyes for a bit and she fell asleep along with her thinking process.
She was disturbed when she felt kisses being showered all over her face.
She slowly opened her eyes, coming face to face with her daughter smiling at her. She genuinely smiled back at the little girl.
She sat up and they shared a hug.
“How was school?”
“School was fine, mommy.”
“I am sure you had fun.
She nodded, grinning.
“I saw Ephraim’s brother. He was so cute.”
Vicky ignored the chills that rolled down her spine.
“Ephraim’s brother?”
Little Sophie nodded. “Yes, mama. His mommy came to pick him up at school so she brought him. He was so cute and so tiny. Ephraim allowed us to play with his brother.
That’s good to hear.” She caressed her daughter’s cheek with the tip of her fingers.
“I am going to have a baby brother soon, right, Mommy?”
“Sophie… Vicky sighed, not knowing what to say.
“You promised, “She pouted, giving her a puppy dog face.
Not knowing what to say, especially now that she was feeling nothing but guilt, Vicky gave in, even though it was certain that she might not fulfill her promise.
“I will think about it.” She answered,
“Thank you, Mommy.” Sophie hugged her tight. Vicky sniffled, trying her best not to cry.
Victoria spent the rest of the day with her daughter which actually helped her by distracting her mind away from the burden she had in her heart.
They ate, she assisted her baby with her homework, played with Sophic, and watched Cartoons with her after which she prepared her for bed, and read her some bedtime stories.
After tucking her baby girl in. Vicky went back to her room. Her eyes met with the drugs and meal plan on the nightstand. She made her there, picked up the meal plan first, and briefly went through it.
Putting the paper back. Vicky picked up her drugs, carefully reading the instructions on the body of each of them.
She took the prescribed dose for the night and gulped down with a glass of water.
Reaching for her phone by the pillow, She came face to face with four missed calls and two text messages. The missed calls were from Kathie and the text messages were from Ashton and an unknown number.
The text messages were basically telling her to get well soon and reading the one from the unknown number, She discovered it was Bessie. She rolled her eyes, wondering how Bessie got her phone number.
She dialed Kathie back who picked up almost immediately.
“I wanted to try calling you once more before I show up at your place”
“Sorry, I was attending to Sophie.”
“It’s fine. How do you feel?”
“I don’t know. I am okay, I guess.”
“Please tell me you have eaten and taken your drugs?”
“Yes, I have.”
“You are not teasing me, right?”
“I had a late lunch and dinner with Sophie. I literally just took the drugs before calling you.”
“I am glad to hear that.”
“So, have you decided what you are going to do?”
“I don’t know yet. But I will sleep over it.”
“You sound really calm. I do not know if that is a good thing.”
“I do not understand why I sound calm either. I was freaking out earlier but after spending time with Sophie, I can’t even explain how I feel. To be honest, I still do not believe that I am pregnant.”

“By the way, how did the meeting go?”

“It went perfectly. The board were happy with what you have done and they sent their regards but there is a new development.”
“What development?”
“The board nominated you to go for a survey in California which is going to last a few weeks. I think you are to be there by next week.”
“California?” Vicky’s heart started beating faster. “Why? What for?”
“It is concerning the branch we want to open there. I don’t know the full details but I know Mr Philip would still reach out to you.”
“Hell no. There is no way I am going to California.”
“I tried to convince them to nominate another person but they said you are one in the best position to go as there would be a lot of negotiations to be done as well as other surveys”
“No, there is no way in hell that I am going to California. I will talk to Mr. Philip. I will also ask Gabriel if he knows about this.”
“You are not thinking the same way I am thinking.
“What are you thinking?”
“Oscar lives in California.”
“I am not going there, Kathie.”
“I feel all of these are more than just a coincidence. You should make good use of it this time.”
“I really do not believe in that thought! This could be Oscar’s doing.”
“It is high time you give that guy a break don’t you think? It is second to none that you think so low of him and yet, your heart never stops beating for him.”
“And I think we all heard and saw evidence that he had sold his shares.”
“I know but I still don’t believe that. No one knows Oscar better than me.”
“This is going to be so tough. I don’t know what else to say to you to keep your mind alive.”
“At first I was furious about you going all the way there but thinking deeper about it, I just saw it as a sign. You see Oscar, you discuss.”
“Well, that is if you intend to keep the baby. Unless you want to raise it alone.”
“The ball is in your court.”
“You are rooting for him. Vicky accused her friend.
“No! I am rooting for you. You have been miserable since he left. I just want to see your countenance while with him before 1 make my Judgment.”
“You’ve moved here, you have a family here which is cool if you are scared of leaving. But you said that Oscar is filthy rich, I am sure he would not mind flying down here every weekend to see you all.”
“You make things seem easier when they are not.”
“Maybe I am guilty of that. I just feel like why continue to be unhappy when there are means to actually be happy?”
“For you to refuse Ashton, it is so glaring that you might never love anyone again so before you throw away the key to your heart, why not give him one last chance?”
“You don’t understand me, Kathie.”
“That is why I am still on this call with you. Make me understand.”
