Chapter 66: Poem of Neverlasting Wisdom
With a quick spell activation, Victoria pushed the spider corpse to the wall by creating a wall of ice parallel to the wall. It rose beside the spider and slid across the ground until the spider was almost flat as a pancake.
Alec’s eyes widened. Victoria was even more capable than he had expected. That speed and the power of her spell were incredible. He felt like the result wouldn’t have changed, even if the spider had been alive.
For a first-circle mage, that was impressive.
’As expected of a duke’s daughter, I guess. Maybe we don’t need to be worried.’
After brushing the spider corpse aside, Victoria took the lead and walked into the next section of the Treasure Room, which turned out to be a large ceremonial hall. Glass beads illuminated the empty chamber, starting from the domed ceiling.
Other than the engravings on the floor, the room was completely barren. Alec couldn’t tell if it was by design or if the ones who discovered the ruin had stripped it bare.
“The Poem should be behind us…” Victoria turned around to look at the wall above the exit, her voice trailing off as she did so.
Fearing the worst, the others soon followed suit, with Ticka being the only exception.
Alec froze as he saw what managed to stun Victoria. A flash of light hit his mind the moment his eyes made contact with the unreadable scribbles on the wall.
The dark clouds of his mind scattered to reveal a blue sky. The muddy waters were cleansed, revealing a beautiful, serene pond.
He blinked, and when he opened his eyes again, the world seemed clearer.
Alec couldn’t put his finger on it, but it was like the colors had become brighter, the shadows darker, and the essence of existence clearer.
At the same time, a couple of runes he hadn’t quite understood, despite [Reader]’s translation, became clear. He understood why Burst had become so explosive when he tried it out yesterday.
The changes he had made had shrunk the condensed ball of air. That led to an exponential increase in potential energy trapped in the sphere, not a linear one. It was like a spring. The more tightly it was wound, the harder and faster it would let loose.
It also grew more unstable, meaning it could even be popped by a leaf or even a particle of sand drifting through the air if he pushed the size hard enough.
Conversely, if he increased the size, he could create a Burst that wouldn’t pop even if it slammed right into a brick wall. It would maintain its form. With a few more modifications after that, he could make a tangible ball of air. If he changed the size and shape and a few more things, wouldn’t flight be possible?
It wouldn’t be true flight since he would be riding the wind like it was a magic carpet, but it was still an idea.
It was at least closer to flight than anything he had found in the library.
’Flight magic is probably restricted, though.’
Alec’s mind spun as he continued thinking about how to modify spells and what he could do with all the runes he knew and had yet to learn.
’I need more mana.’
Even before he got started, he could tell that he would need a lot of mana to power the more flashy spells he could think of.
“Woah…” Maura said after a while, her mind blown away by the initial effects of the Poem of Neverlasting Wisdom. She was pretty sure she had just learned the spell Alec had gifted her in one go.
The others also soon left their shared reverie with glassy eyes and droopy faces.
Ticka was the last since she was the last to look at the Poem.
“Huh?” Maura tilted her head with a frown as she stared at the Poem.
“Why can’t I…?”
“Why can’t you do that again?” Victoria finished for her.
Maura nodded.
“That’s why it’s called the Poem of Neverlasting Wisdom. It grants a burst of clarity and wisdom to whoever sees it. But it becomes unreadable immediately afterward. It’s thought to be because of the language it is written in, but it’s impossible to confirm since no one knows what that language is.
“It is unlike anything recorded anywhere in the kingdom, after all.”
Alec’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the inscription on the wall.
Indeed. He couldn’t read it.
However, there was something about the way Victoria said it that made him curious.
He closed his eyes for a moment to focus.
A moment later, the scribbles that were on the wall also appeared in front of him in the form of a blue holographic screen. Not only that, he could also tell what it said.
’See it through, and it shall see through you. Hold high and you will never fall low. The world is one with you.’
It was a nonsensical string of words that lost almost all of its meaning when taken out of the context of the original language. That was why Alec could tell that the theory was close.
It was indeed because of the original language of the poem that it became unreadable after looking at it once. But it wasn’t just the language. It was the combination of the language and the poem.
To his disappointment, though, just looking at the stored version in [Reader] wasn’t enough to trigger the effect again. Still, the information about such a miraculous language was enough.
If he could learn the language, he could maybe write a poem like it.
“There is no need to worry. What you felt just now wasn’t all. Although not as potent, the effect is permanent. You can think of it as making you all a little more intelligent. That is not something that passes.”
“Thank you for showing us this, Lady Victoria,” Maura thanked Victoria from the bottom of her heart. This was something no amount of money could buy, especially for someone without money like Maura.
“Of course.” Victoria smiled slightly before flicking her wrist to cast a spell, her face turning icy.
