Chapter 30: Golden Horn
Mio
Kaito drove, eyes forward.
Mio sat in the passenger seat, watching Meguro blur past. Sixty-one thousand points of debt, and the clock still ticking.
The radio was off. The only sound was the engine and the wet hiss of tires on asphalt.
Neither of them spoke for three blocks.
“She talked about you.”
Mio’s head turned. “What?”
“Aoi.” Kaito’s eyes stayed on the road. “She talked about you. Before.”
Mio’s hands curled in her lap.
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Use her name like that. Like she’s just—context.”
Kaito took a turn. The van’s tires squealed.
“She said you were trying too hard. That’s what she told me, last time we talked. Two days before the cathedral.” His grip tightened on the wheel. “’Mio tries too hard. She doesn’t understand that some things can’t be fixed by effort.’”
Mio watched the buildings slide past. A convenience store with a line out the door. People buying onigiri at midnight like the world made sense.
“What else?”
Kaito was quiet for a block. Then:
“She said, ’Mio’s going to figure it out, and when she does—’” He stopped. Changed lanes. “Her phone died. She never finished the sentence. Never called back.”
Kaito’s eyes went to her gauntlet. Then to her eyes.
She met his.
“She should have finished the job.”
The van stopped. Kaito got out.
Mio followed.
Three blocks from Meguro Station. Mio followed after the silver-haired boy. He walked with the same pace Aoi did. Long strides, shoulders back, like the world would move for him.
The second incursion was an elementary school. It had manifested without warning three days ago. Some kids died during its assimilation. Weeds hadn’t cracked the concrete yet. A basketball sat deflated by the entrance.
Bureau barriers surrounded the perimeter. Fewer agents than Shibuya.
“Advance team went in an hour ago,” one of them said. Young. Kept glancing at the shimmer behind him. “Four C-grades. They haven’t reported back.”
“Comms?”
“Dead. The incursion’s blocking everything.”
Kaito nodded. Checked his sheath. “Stay on the perimeter. Don’t follow us in.”
The shimmer here was different. Gray and sluggish, but Mio didn’t have time to care. She pushed through and it clung to her skin like wet ash.
[ENTERING INCURSION]
[Meguro Elementary — Grade: C]
[Type: ???]
[Hostiles: 2]
Two. Only two hostiles left.
Inside, the wrongness hit immediately.
The schoolyard had stretched. The building loomed three times its normal height, windows stacked in rows that climbed into a sky that wasn’t there.
And silence. Pressure against her eardrums. No movement anywhere.
“Stay close,” Kaito said. “This one’s off.”
They moved through the entrance. The halls stretched ahead, classroom doors on both sides, lockers rusted shut. A child’s drawing of a house pinned to a bulletin board. Empty.
Then Mio saw the blood.
A smear on the wall near the stairwell. Fresh. Still wet. It trailed down the steps, disappearing into shadow.
“Advance team,” Kaito said.
They followed the trail. More blood on the handrail. A dropped sword, standard Bureau issue, the blade snapped clean in half. No body.
The trail ended at the gym doors.
Mio checked the timer.
[ENGINE: OBJECTIVE]
Clear C-Grade Incursion: 1/2
Time Remaining: 1:58:22
Failure: ???
[Reservoir: -61,000/162,500]
“The gym,” Kaito said. “Whatever did this is in there.”
He pushed the doors open.
The gym floor was gone.
Something organic had replaced it. Pulsing tissue, veins of pale light running through flesh-colored growth. The basketball hoops had melted into icicles dripping black ichor. The walls breathed.
And in the center: the core.
Legs emerged from behind it. Eight, then ten. A body the size of a delivery truck, covered in bristling hair. Mandibles clicked in the dark.
[Spider Queen — C-grade]
[HP: 12,000]
Finally. Something to kill.
Kaito’s hand went to his hilt. “I’ll flank. You—”
Something dropped from the ceiling.
A gray blur that made no sound. It landed on the Spider Queen’s back and tore through chitin like paper.
The queen screamed. Tried to turn to face its new enemy.
Dead before she finished the motion.
The thing on her back straightened. Pulled its arm free from the hollowed thorax. Turned toward them.
Small, child-sized. Maybe eight years old, if it had ever been human. Gray skin that swallowed light. A single horn on its forehead, golden, gleaming against the dark.
It stood on the Spider Queen’s corpse like it just landed a great catch, but it was looking at the two humans now.
[Gray Daemon — C-grade]
[HP: 2,000/2,000]
“C-grade,” Kaito said quietly. “That’s not right.”
The daemon tilted its head.
The motion was mechanical.
It stepped off the queen’s body. The Spider Queen’s bloom was already gone. Absorbed before it could form.
The advance team. Four C-grades.
The Spider Queen.
Everything in this incursion. It had eaten all of it.
The daemon’s mouth opened.
“Mommy?”
Mio closed the distance in two strides. The obsidian blade swung up. The daemon’s arm came off at the elbow.
[-463 HP]
The arm came off clean. She’d expected resistance, some reflex at least.
The child-shape staggered. Looked at its missing arm. That blank face didn’t change.
Mio didn’t hesitate. Can drove toward the thing’s chest.
The daemon twisted. Not fast enough. The blade bit deep, carved through ribs.
[-834 HP]
[Gray Daemon — C-grade]
[HP: 703/2,000]
It fell.
Mio stood over it. The child-shape lay in a spreading pool of its own blood, golden horn dimming.
“It’s done,” she said.
Kaito hadn’t moved from the entrance. “No.”
Its remaining hand twitched, then moved aimlessly towards its forehead.
Fingers found the base of the golden horn and it began tugging.
The horn moved.
Sliding out of the skull like it had never been attached. It wasn’t bone, that much Mio knew. The reflection across the surface was telling: this was metal. Twelve inches of golden edge emerging from gray flesh.
The daemon’s blank eyes found Mio.
Then it plunged the blade into its own chest.
Blood erupted from the wound. Not spraying outward but building, veins and membrane and pulsing tissue wrapping around the child-shape like a cocoon. It swelled. Doubled in size. Tripled. The gym floor cracked beneath its weight.
Kaito was beside her. His hand closed on her arm, pulling her back.
“Move.”
The cocoon burst.
Something stood in the ruin of it.
Seven feet tall. Gray skin stretched over new muscle, new bone. Steam rose from flesh still settling into shape.
The proportions were wrong. Too elegant. Limbs too long, waist too narrow. Something out of a shrine painting. Ash where gold should be.
Then the wings unfurled.
White feathers streaked with gold, spreading wide enough to cast shadows across the ruined floor. The light caught them and held.
And in its chest, the base of the golden horn. Flush with the sternum. Seamless with the new flesh.
The daemon looked at its hands. Turned them over. Watched the fingers flex. Curious. Like a child seeing itself for the first time.
[Golden Daemon — B-grade]
[HP: 45,000/45,000]
It wasn’t looking at them.
It was studying its own palm. The lines there. The way light fell across gray skin.
Kaito’s hand found her arm. Squeezed once.
She understood. While it was distracted.
He moved left. She drifted right. Flanking pattern. The daemon’s blind spots would be behind the wings, where the feathers blocked peripheral vision. If they hit simultaneously…
He met her eyes. Nodded.
They moved.
Kaito came in low, sheath swinging for the tendons behind its knee. Mio went high, Can driving toward the junction of wing and spine. A crippling strike and a killing stroke, delivered in the same heartbeat.
[Absolute Purity]
Kaito’s swing finished. His intent didn’t. The sheath tapped the daemon’s leg like a greeting. No force. No follow-through.
Can retracted. The blade folded back into the gauntlet and stayed there. Mio’s arm was still raised, still mid-strike, but there was nothing at the end of it.
[Active Form: Blade]
[Unequipped]
She tried to summon him again. The command formed. The will was there.
Nothing happened.
The daemon hadn’t moved. Still examining its hands.
“Ah.” The daemon’s voice cut through the gym, layered and echoing twice over itself. “I had almost forgotten this.”
It touched its own throat. Curious.
“Language,” it said. “How I have missed this limitation.”
Mio stepped back. Her gauntlet was dead weight on her arm. Kaito’s sheath hung useless at his side.
“Kaito—”
He was staring at his hand. Opening and closing it. The motion worked. The intent didn’t.
“What is it?”
“Ill-intent nullification.” His voice was flat. “These kinds of monsters suck.”
Mio’s eyes widened. “You’ve fought things like this?”
“Once. Kagami took its head off before we could diagnose its attack patterns.”
“Oh.”
The daemon’s gaze found them.
“You.”
Its wings coiled tight against its back.
It vanished.
No. It moved. She saw its silhouette cross twenty feet in the space between heartbeats, wings driving it forward like a bow releasing.
Faster than anything she’d faced. But slower than Mori.
Offense was violence. Defense was survival. Maybe the distinction mattered.
[Active Form: —]
Would you like to switch to defense?
“Can.”
The sludge sprouted from her wrist once more, eager.
“Defense.”
[Initializing…]
[Active Form: Shield]
[Trait: Ironblood — Damage absorbed heals Reservoir]
The daemon’s claws crystallized.
Mio planted her feet.
Come.
It came.
The impact hit like a collapsing building. Can’s shield caught the blow, obsidian and green veins flaring bright, but the force didn’t care. It went through her and kept going.
[-120 HP]
She was lifted off her shoes. Concrete exploded as she punched through the gym wall. A classroom swallowed her, desks spinning away. She hit the far wall. Went through that too.
[-243 HP]
Chalkboard. Lockers. Then something solid enough to stop her.
[-165 HP]
[HP: 952/1,480]
The daemon was already there. Wings folded, standing over her, head tilted. Waiting to see if she’d get up.
Then the warmth came.
Not the pain. Of course she felt that. Something flowed back into her, filling the hollow where the debt had been eating her alive.
Something familiar.
[Reservoir: -61,000]
Every point of damage Can absorbed—
Fed me.
Mio laughed. It came out wet. Blood on her teeth, blood on her lips, but she was laughing.
She pushed herself up. Spat red.
The daemon straightened its wings. Purple eyes trailing to the shield on her arm, then to her green eyes.
“Is that it?”
Whether it was Mio or Can that said it, she couldn’t tell.
She didn’t care.
Without another thought, the daemon grabbed the hilt of the horn at its chest, and pulled out a three-foot blade of brilliant gold.
