Chapter 96: Elder Shen’s Gamble
The silence held for three full heartbeats after Lin Tian’s words faded.
Then the air above the square cracked.
It wasn’t a sound, but a feeling, like the sky itself was a sheet of ice someone had stepped on. Two figures materialized on the roof of the gatehouse, their robes untouched by the wind.
Elder Shen Ruoyi stood with her hands clasped behind her back, her expression unreadable. Beside her was a man Lin Tian had only seen in council portraits—Elder Boran, his face like carved granite, his eyes the color of a winter sky.
The pressure Lin Tian had released snapped back into him, coiled tight. Too late. They felt the ripple from the cavern, and now this.
Du Heng stumbled back another step, bowing deeply. “Honored Elders! This outer disciple, Lin Tian, he—”
“Silence,” Elder Boran said. His voice was quiet, but it carried the weight of an avalanche. Every disciple in the square flinched. Du Heng’s mouth clamped shut.
Elder Shen’s gaze was fixed on Lin Tian. She stepped off the roof, descending as if walking down an invisible staircase. Elder Boran followed, his landing making the packed earth tremble slightly.
They stopped ten paces away. The crowd of Frozen Sword disciples scrambled back, creating a wide, empty circle around Lin Tian and the two elders.
“Report,” Elder Shen said, her eyes never leaving Lin Tian’s face.
Du Heng found his voice, though it was now a strained whisper. “Elder, he assaulted Ye Feng! He broke his armor and his spirit! We came to demand justice, and he… he threatened us!”
“I asked for a report on the spiritual anomaly,” Elder Shen said, her tone icy. “Not a child’s complaint.”
Elder Boran’s eyes narrowed. He took a single step forward, and the air grew colder. “You. Release your suppression. Fully.”
It wasn’t a request. It was an order that vibrated in Lin Tian’s bones. He could feel the man’s spiritual sense pressing against him, a vast, glacial force trying to peel his layers apart.
If I refuse, they’ll force it. If I comply, they’ll see everything.
He met Elder Boran’s gaze and let go.
He didn’t unleash his aura. He simply stopped holding it in. The coiled power within him unfurled, not as a weapon, but as a fact.
The air around him shimmered, not with heat or cold, but with a strange, neutral density. The packed earth at his feet didn’t crack or freeze. It just settled, as if under a greater weight.
Elder Boran’s stony face didn’t change, but his eyes widened a fraction. Elder Shen went very, very still.
“True Spirit Realm,” Elder Boran stated, the words dropping into the silence like stones. “Fifth Level.”
A collective gasp swept through the disciples. Whispers erupted, frantic and disbelieving. “Fifth Level? That’s impossible!” “He was Elementary Spirit a week ago!” “Sorcery! It has to be!”
Elder Shen raised a hand. The whispers died instantly. Her gaze was analytical, sharp as a surgeon’s knife. “The ripple from North Peak. That was your breakthrough.”
Lin Tian gave a single, shallow nod. “It was.”
“Explain the mechanism.” Elder Boran’s voice was harsh. “No pill, no closed-door meditation session on record. A jump of an entire major realm and five sub-levels in a matter of days is not cultivation. It is possession. Or theft.”
The word ’theft’ hung in the air. Lin Tian could feel the suspicion hardening around him. They think I stole someone’s cultivation. Or that a demonic entity has taken root in my body.
Before he could form a reply, a new voice cut through the tension.
“It was neither.”
Su Lan pushed her way through the ring of disciples, her Discipline Hall uniform pristine, her face pale but set. She walked straight into the circle and bowed to the elders. “Elder Shen. Elder Boran. The fluctuation was my responsibility.”
Elder Boran’s head turned slowly toward her. “Disciple Su. Explain.”
Su Lan kept her head bowed, but her voice was clear and steady. “After the incident in the Reflection Tower, Lin Tian’s meridians were critically unstable. The conflicting ice and fire energies were tearing his foundation apart. My assigned duty was to stabilize him. During treatment, I observed a… a spontaneous physiological evolution.”
She risked a glance up. “His body, under the extreme stress of the harmonizing energies, began to adapt. It rewrote its own constitution. The medical texts call it ’Forced Symbiotic Ascension.’ It is rare, but documented. The breakthrough was a side effect of his vessel upgrading to contain the power it had already inadvertently absorbed.”
The square was dead quiet. Lin Tian listened, impressed despite himself. She’s weaving truth and lie together so smoothly. The evolution happened, but not from her ’treatment.’ And she’s putting her own neck on the line by claiming responsibility.
Elder Shen’s eyebrow lifted almost imperceptibly. “You are stating, as a physician of this sect, that his cultivation is self-derived? Not demonic, not stolen?”
“I am,” Su Lan said, her voice firm. “I monitored the entire process. The qi is pure, if unorthodox. It is his own.”
Elder Boran snorted. “A convenient diagnosis from the disciple who has been seen frequenting his quarters. Your professional judgment may be clouded, Disciple Su.”
Su Lan’s cheeks flushed, but she didn’t back down. “My judgment is based on medical observation. You may verify it yourself, Elder. Scan his meridians. You will find the unique signature of evolved tissue, not foreign qi or demonic taint.”
Elder Shen stepped forward. “I will.”
She placed two fingers on Lin Tian’s wrist. Her touch was cold, but her spiritual probe was precise and overwhelming.
It flooded into him, tracing every meridian, examining his dantian, scrutinizing the swirling vortex of Ice Flame Qi at his core.
Lin Tian held perfectly still, letting her see everything she wanted—except the silent, pulsing interface of the System in the back of his mind.
After a long minute, she withdrew her hand. Her expression was thoughtful.
“The disciple speaks truth,” Elder Shen announced, her voice carrying across the square. “The foundation is self-contained. The constitution has been reforged. It is… unprecedented, but not illicit.”
A murmur of shock ran through the crowd. Elder Boran’s jaw tightened. “Unprecedented means unknown. Unknown means risk. The council will never accept this. They will call for sequestration. For dissection, to understand the ’evolution.’”
“The council,” Elder Shen said, turning to face him fully, “is currently deadlocked. Half see a dangerous anomaly. The other half see a potential weapon.” Her voice dropped, becoming a private conversation between the two elders, though everyone could still hear. “The betrothal ceremony is in two days. Mu Chen’s faction grows more confident by the hour. They believe their victory is assured.”
Elder Boran’s eyes flickered toward Lin Tian. “You propose to use this… wild variable… to test that confidence.”
“I propose to introduce a measure of uncertainty,” Elder Shen corrected, her tone cool. “The Contest of Resonance is a public challenge. If the bonded partner can prove a deeper harmony than the proposed match, the betrothal can be voided. It is an ancient law, rarely invoked.”
“You think a True Spirit Fifth Level, no matter how oddly gained, can challenge a Seventh Level Core Spirit disciple with a Frozen Jade Body?” Boran’s voice was thick with skepticism. “It is not a test. It is a slaughter. And it would embarrass the sect.”
“Or,” Elder Shen said, her gaze returning to Lin Tian, “it would reveal whether our precious Core Disciple is truly as unshakeable as he appears. If Mu Chen falters, even for a moment, it weakens his faction’s grip.
If Lin Tian shows unexpected resilience, it proves his value was overlooked. Either outcome provides… clarity.”
Lin Tian listened, the cold anger in his chest solidifying into a sharp, clear point. I’m a tool. A stone she’s throwing into a pond to see how the fish react.
Elder Boran was silent for a long moment, his gaze calculating. Finally, he gave a short, sharp nod. “The council will rage. But the authority to grant provisional status for a trial challenge rests with the presiding elders. If you are willing to stake your reputation on this gamble, I will not oppose it. For now.”
Elder Shen turned back to Lin Tian. “You have heard. Your existence is politically inconvenient. You are also, potentially, politically useful. Therefore, you are granted Provisional Inner Disciple Status, effective immediately.”
A wave of shocked whispers rolled through the Frozen Sword disciples. Du Heng looked like he’d been slapped.
“This status comes with conditions,” Elder Shen continued, her voice leaving no room for argument. “You will be moved to the Solitary Reflection Pavilion on the central peak. You are to remain there, in preparation for the Contest. You will have access to Tier Zero cultivation resources—the highest grade. You will not, under any circumstances, attempt to contact or approach Disciple Bai Xueya before the ceremony. Is that understood?”
Lin Tian’s fists clenched at his sides. They’re locking me up. And locking her away. He felt a pulse of cold worry through his bond with Xueya, a faint echo of her hearing this decree.
“If I win the Contest,” Lin Tian said, his voice low, “the betrothal is void. What then?”
“Then,” Elder Shen said, a faint, unreadable smile touching her lips, “you will have proven your use outweighs your inconvenience. The conversation changes. But first, you must survive the proving ground.”
She gestured, and two inner disciples in austere gray robes materialized from the crowd. “Escort Disciple Lin to the Solitary Reflection Pavilion. See that he is settled.”
The disciples bowed and moved to flank Lin Tian. He didn’t resist. He looked past Elder Shen, past the gawking crowd, toward the distant, mist-shrouded peaks where the Frostheart Residence stood.
Two days, he thought, as the gray-robed disciples led him away from the outer quarters, through a path that only inner disciples were allowed to take. They’ve given me a cage, and a key made of someone else’s pride.
Time to see if the key fits the lock.
