Chapter 51: Rayden’s Complaint, System Gift.
Chapter 51
They continued forward at full speed. Selene carried Rayden on her back, moving fast through the forest. The baby showed terrifying endurance, not even nauseated despite their pace, making things easier for them.
They kept moving, searching for a human settlement.
But this was the same thing Callack had been trying to do for months now, and he had made no real progress. It wasn’t like they were suddenly going to get lucky and stumble into a village by accident.
If anything, they were destined to run into more danger.
And more.
Hopefully nothing too far above their league.
For some strange reason, they didn’t encounter anything that completely overwhelmed them. That didn’t mean they were safe. It only meant the danger came in smaller, sharper pieces, one after another.
The one suffering the most was Rayden.
In Callack’s defense, he was still the one taking the heaviest hits. But Rayden’s case was different. He was the weakest. Literally a baby. Fragile. Helpless.
The fact that he had nearly died more than once already was enough to make him deeply uncomfortable.
After surviving yet another precarious situation that would have surely killed him if his mom hadn’t intervened in time, Vastro finally snapped.
You damned system.
The roar echoed inside his mind, aimed straight at the hellbrand embedded in his soul.
Can’t you do anything? Is this all hell gives to those bound to it? Pathetic.
For all he knew, the outburst was useless. Who even knew if the hellbrand was alive or sentient? How was it supposed to respond to his complaints?
At first, nothing happened.
No reaction. No feedback.
Then something changed.
The hellbrand buried deep within Rayden’s soul trembled.
A pulse spread through him, sharp and unfamiliar, followed by a series of notifications that made baby Vastro raise an eyebrow.
Well. That’s new.
New notification
Host complaint registered.
Evaluating emotional output.
Result: excessive whining detected.
Whether ancient or not, the host is currently just a baby.
Adjusting parameters.
Due to the abundance of soul remnant energy clinging to the reborn vessel, the Hellbrand System will now provide temporary survival skills.
Warning. Host body is fragile enough to die from hiccups.
Choose wisely.
Vastro raised an eyebrow.
What was with that warning? Of course he knew this body was weak. Being human sucked, but there was nothing he could do about that for now. He had accepted it.
What actually caught his attention wasn’t being called fragile.
It was something else.
One of the questions he had been dying to confirm had just been answered.
The system was alive.
Or at least sentient enough.
And it sounded annoyed.
Probably didn’t appreciate him insulting its origin and ego.
He didn’t care.
His focus shifted downward as a new tab opened.
Temporary skills available
1. Infernal Instinct
Your ancient combat awareness is compressed into a primal survival reaction.
Effect: early danger sensing, feral reflexes, instinctive evasion.
Cost: low soul drain.
2. Hell Influence
Your aura subtly warps the environment to meet your desire.
Effect: manipulate small outcomes. Shift a stone. Spark a flame. Weaken an enemy’s grip. Sharpen a crude weapon slightly. And more.
Cost: medium soul drain.
3. Ultra Boost
Momentary enhancement for strength or speed.
Effect: small burst of power far beyond what a mortal infant should be capable of.
Cost: high soul drain.
Warning: host limbs may snap or cramp when used due to fragile body.
Rayden groaned internally. Damn it.
But he shifted his attention to the next option.
4. Nether Whispers
Project faint psychic pulses. Pull, push, or more.
Effect: distract beasts, cloud an enemy’s mind, or freeze a weak opponent mentally.
The weaker the mind, the stronger the influence.
5. Ember of Will
Flame creation through sheer intent.
Effect: create sparks, fireballs, or massive infernos. Power depends on host will and soul energy.
Cost: high to extremely high.
6. Abyssal Pulse
Mental shockwaves of dread.
Effect: stun enemies, deal direct strikes, instill genuine terror in weaker minds.
High chance of mind destruction if the target is extremely weak.
Cost: extremely high.
Warning: baby body may faint after use.
7. Soul Echo Vision
Momentarily access spiritual sight.
Effect: detect killing intent, foresee danger, sense traps, and more.
Duration: 10 seconds max.
Cost: high.
8. Hellskin Fortification
Temporarily hardens host flesh.
Effect: reduces physical harm, increases durability.
Cost: extreme soul drain.
Warning: massive post-drain after use.
9. Ethereal Shroud
Creates a thin, almost imperceptible aura around the body, warping perception for anyone nearby.
Note: do not think of it as shining armor. You will regret that when you die.
Cost: high.
10. Soul Conduit
Creates a channel to manage the flow of soul energy. Control, use, and drain all done through the host’s soul itself.
Can only be used once a day.
SYSTEM REMARK
You cried for a blanket.
So now you are offered weapons of calamity.
Choose the candy that won’t shatter your baby teeth.
Choose wisely.
To be continued…
