I left the park with Jung Yu-na, the children naturally tagging along. We were headed to a gathering of wizards.
On the way, Levinas ran around excitedly.
“Woohoo!” she cried, darting about with the agility unique to horned rabbits.
Admirably, she steered clear of the road. It seemed she had her own safety rules.
“Levinas, we need to cross at that traffic light.”
“Red light!”
Levinas stopped in front of the traffic light, freezing like a statue.
“Levinas?”
I waved my hand in front of her face.
Only then did her eyes move and her mouth open.
“King! You have to stop on red!”
“Oh, right. I didn’t know.”
It was some kind of red light freezing game. Looking closer, Saebyeok beside her wasn’t even breathing.
“Hm? Does Gyeoul not know about traffic lights yet?”
Jung Yu-na, who’d been walking while looking at her smartphone, turned to me.
She was treating me like I was primitive.
“I do know about traffic lights…” I muttered.
“R-right? You know to stop on red, right?”
“Yes…”
“Sorry, I just wanted to make sure. You can never be too careful about safety.”
That was true. Since she said it out of concern, I decided not to take offense.
“Yu-na, where are we going anyway?”
“We’ll be there in about 15 minutes.”
“Fifteen minutes!”
Levinas perked up her ears and started counting on her fingers.
A minute later, she announced, “Fifteen minutes is 900 seconds!”
“Wow, you calculated all that? Levinas, you’re amazing.”
“Our Levinas is good at math, huh?”
Pleased by the praise, Levinas puffed out her chest with an “ahem”.
We made our way to the building Yu-na mentioned in high spirits.
“Wow,” I breathed as we entered.
The interior consisted of ordinary offices and labs. It looked more scientific than magical.
“Can you wait outside for a bit?” Yu-na asked.
“Sure.”
She opened the door to what looked like a research lab and went inside. The voices from inside were clearly audible.
“I’m here!” Yu-na called out.
“You’re here?”
“Why are you so late?”
People welcomed Yu-na, though some sounded slightly hostile.
“So, are we really going to draw a magic circle with alcohol slime mana stones today?” someone asked.
“Yep! I’m telling you, we can definitely do it!” Yu-na replied confidently.
“You know you have to cover this month’s dues if you can’t, right?”
“And if I succeed, I’m exempt for three months.”
“You’re talking as if it’s actually going to work.”
Though skeptical, they didn’t sound particularly grumbling or sarcastic. The atmosphere was more competitive than hostile.
“To be honest, I was about to give up too. But it turns out our Gyeoul is quite the genius!” Yu-na boasted.
“Gyeoul?”
“Yeah. Kids, want to come in?”
Levinas was the first to respond, dashing inside. I just poked my face in slightly.
“Is this child Gyeoul?”
A man who seemed to be Yu-na’s rival asked, looking at Levinas.
“That’s right! Levinas is Gyeoul!” Levinas responded firmly.
“Levinas?”
“Oh…!”
Was she trying to deceive them?
Her habit of referring to herself by name immediately gave her away.
“Wait, Gunwoo, you live in this neighborhood and don’t know Gyeoul?” someone asked.
“Lee Gunwoo doesn’t know anything except magic,” another chided.
After memorizing his name, I entered the room.
“I’m Gyeoul…”
I said quietly.
“I see,” Gunwoo nodded awkwardly, then turned back to Yu-na. “So, how is this child going to help?”
Yu-na laughed mischievously. “Hehehe…”
Come to think of it, she was a real witch.
Inside the research lab, quite a few wizards had gathered around Yu-na. Counting them all, there were twelve in total.
“This is the first time I’ve seen so many wizards,” I commented.
“Yep. And I’m the best among them, right?”
Yu-na said, bringing over a glass bottle filled with floating blue mana stones.
“The best?”
Lee Gunwoo flinched but didn’t comment further.
“What kind of powder is this?” I asked.
“Alcohol slime mana stones.”
“Alcohol slime?” There were so many monsters I didn’t know about.
Yu-na explained, “This little guy spoils and evaporates easily. It can only be handled with specific magic. Even a fingertip touch spoils it.”
She used magic to take out the mana stones, which immediately began to evaporate.
“You’re right. It’s evaporating little by little,” I observed.
“You can see that?”
Yu-na asked, surprised.
“Yes…”
“That’s impressive. Even I need to use magic to confirm it.”
Yu-na cleared her throat and continued, “If you turn this into powder, it evaporates even faster. We have to draw the magic circle within about 30 minutes.”
“30 minutes?”
She explained that because it was such a sensitive mana stone, only one type of magic could be used. Any contact with measurement magic, certain light spectrums, or other tools would immediately spoil it.
“That sounds really difficult,” I said.
“Yeah. That’s why we need your help, Gyeoul.”
“I’m not sure if I’ll do well.”
“I’m sure you will,” Yu-na reassured me, patting my head. A few other wizards did the same.
Someone was even fiddling with my tail – it turned out to be Levinas.
“King, Levinas will cheer for you,” she said.
“Me too,” Saebyeok added.
“Thanks,” I smiled.
With their encouragement, the magic circle drawing began. Yu-na and two other wizards were crushing the mana stones, already sweating profusely.
“Is breaking that so difficult?” I asked.
“Yeah. We’re using levitation magic to crush it.”
I watched the mana stones being crushed through the glass wall, then looked down at the paper in my hand. ‘The radius of the circle must be exactly 90 cm.’
Yu-na and the others began moving the mana stone powder to draw the magic circle in mid-air using levitation magic.
“The circle needs to be a bit bigger,” I instructed.
“Like this?”
“No, just a little more… Yes. That’s perfect.”
Precise measurements were crucial. Normally, they would use measurement magic, but now they could only use levitation magic. I had to concentrate extremely hard.
“Gyeoul, is this enough here?”
“No, it’s too long. You need to turn right 1 cm above.”
I compared the magic circle drawn on the paper with the one they were creating in real-time. To deal with all three simultaneously, I used my ability to see the world in slow motion – the same one I use when shooting arrows.
“This might actually work,” someone muttered.
“Yeah.”
“I’ll pay all the dues if it works out.”
The watching wizards gulped, their hands drenched in sweat. Everyone was praying for success.
“That third circle is a bit crooked,” I pointed out.
“O-okay.”
Ten minutes passed, then twenty. As the timer approached thirty minutes, the plain blue mana stones began to emit light.
“Wow! It worked!”
“I thought this was only possible in theory.”
The spectating wizards exclaimed in admiration. Even Lee Gunwoo was gaping.
“Did it work?” I asked hesitantly.
“Yes!” Yu-na hugged me tightly and spun around. My tail wagged rapidly, happy to have been helpful.
“So what does the magic circle we just made do?” I asked.
“It doesn’t have any particularly amazing function.”
“It doesn’t…?”
I looked up at Yu-na, bewildered. Wasn’t this supposed to be an incredibly impressive magic circle?
“Yeah. The topic this time was whether we could draw a magic circle with alcohol slime mana stone fragments or not.”
“I see.”
My shoulders drooped in disappointment. Was it just about the competitive spirit of wizards?
Lee Gunwoo approached me.
“It might seem useless right now, but it’s not entirely meaningless. These things accumulate to create big developments.”
I watched the magic circle disappearing as it evaporated. The light was fading in real-time, but the experience and effort of those intensely focused thirty minutes weren’t disappearing. I think I understood what he meant.
“Thanks to you, I got to see something good. This is a gift,” he said, handing me a metal badge.
“This is…?”
I asked, not recognizing the magical item.
“Wow, you’re giving this to Gyeoul?” Yu-na exclaimed.
“What is it?”
“It’s a badge from the Korean wizards Association. And a pretty high-ranking one at that.” Yu-na grinned and elbowed Lee Gunwoo, whose brow furrowed slightly.
“I’m giving it to you because I see potential,” he explained.
“Is it okay even though I’m not a wizard?”
“Well, the talent you just showed could be considered magic in its own right.”
“Huh?” I looked down at my palm, confused.
Yu-na poked my side. “Gyeoul, hurry and take it. A badge from the association president is a big deal.”
“Eh? Association president?” I looked up at Lee Gunwoo with surprised eyes. He stared back expressionlessly.
“Mr. President, what can I do with this?” I asked.
“You can receive help from the association once a quarter. Of course, dues are required, but… I’ll waive that part for you.”
“Then could I request lectures or something?”
“Lectures? It’s possible, but…”
“I see.”
Our guild had lots of people from other guilds and novice adventurers. I thought it would be good to ask for lectures for them.
It wasn’t simply to do a good deed; it was to raise the guild’s reputation through free lectures. I, who always only received help, wanted to contribute to the guild’s development too.
