Chapter 101: His Exodus
Chapter 101: His Exodus
Raziel blinked and the corrupted red text faded from his vision.
Celestine remained on the floor bleeding heavily from the mouth and did not move.
Raziel didn’t waste time checking her pulse, he didn’t care if she lived or died.
The new class blocked his empathy and replaced it with practical logic, he just walked directly to Mirael.
The Oracle hung from the chains, her eyes stopped glowing with that terrifying white light and returned to a dull gray.
Raziel stood in front of her. “We need to go.”
He raised his right hand.
The gold and black energy wrapped around his fingers and grabbed the thick enchanted iron chains holding her collarbones.
HISSS!
The umbral mana melted the iron instantly and Mirael fell forward and Raziel caught her before she hit the ground.
She was incredibly light and felt like just skin and bones after years of starvation.
Mirael raised her hand, the cut on her palm was still open and dripping. “The ritual, Finish it.”
Raziel shook his head. “You don’t have enough blood left.”
Mirael grabbed his tunic tightly. “Do it, but listen to me first, the ritual won’t purge the darkness anymore because you fused with it, the blood will only stabilize the core so the power doesn’t rip your body apart.”
Raziel didn’t hesitate.
He pressed his hand against hers and absorbed the golden blood directly into the open cracks of his own skin.
VMMMM!
The pain of the fusion stopped immediately.
The gold and black energy stopped fighting each other and settled inside his core.
[SYSTEM UPDATE]
[CORE STABILIZED]
[UMBRAL PARAGON MAINTAINED]
Raziel lifted Mirael onto his back and adjusted her weight.
Raziel looked at the broken door. “Hold on tight.”
He ran out of the cell and went up the stone stairs.
He skipped steps and his new strength made him fast.
He kicked the heavy door to Level 1 open.
The entire north wing was on fire, Iris’s fire spread everywhere and it destroyed the containment seals on the walls.
Total chaos ruled the main floor.
Ser Roderic stood in the middle of the hallway.
He swung a ripped iron bar and smashed a Night Guard Sister directly in the jaw.
CRACK!
The Sister collapsed and didn’t get up.
Other prisoners fought with their bare hands, they bit and scratched the guards, they had no magic left but they had a lot of rage.
Lucian fought two Elite Sisters at once with his short dagger, he ducked under a holy light blast and cut one of the guards deep on the thigh.
Lara was right behind him, she guided a group of weak and drained patients toward the back grate on the floor.
A third Sister raised her wooden staff to hit Lucian from behind.
Raziel pointed his open hand.
FWOOSH!
A blast of black and gold energy hit the Sister right in the chest and threw her into the burning wall.
Lucian turned around, looked at the strange magic and then looked at Raziel.
Lucian yelled over the noise of the fire. “What the hell was that?”
Raziel kept moving. “I improvised! Keep moving.”
They ran toward the drainage tunnel at the end of the hall.
Six figures in red cloaks blocked the intersection.
Inquisitors.
Raziel cursed and prepared to fight them all.
He gathered the umbral mana in his hands, then he saw something that made absolutely no sense.
Thaddeus didn’t attack the prisoners, he raised his silver sword and decapitated a Sister of St. Sophia instead.
SHIING!
The other Inquisitors followed his lead and started slaughtering the sanatorium staff.
Thaddeus stepped forward and cut the magical chains of a trapped patient with a single swing of his blade.
Lucian stopped and lowered his dagger.
He looked at the Inquisitor in total disbelief. “Are you helping us?”
Thaddeus didn’t even look at him, wiped the blood from his blade on his red cloak.
Thaddeus sheathed his sword. “I am not helping you, just doing my job. This place burning is my job.”
He paused and finally looked at Lucian. “You escaping is an acceptable side effect.”
Raziel understood everything in a second.
The Inquisition didn’t care about him at all.
The arrest warrant was just a legal excuse to enter the building with armed men, high Inquisitor Aldric knew Celestine was stealing Gifts and building a private weapon factory.
He knew she was getting too powerful outside the Church’s control so he sent Thaddeus to kill everyone involved.
Thaddeus pointed to the grate. “Go! Before I change my mind and arrest you anyway.”
Raziel didn’t need to be told twice.
He adjusted Mirael on his back and ran toward the iron grate on the floor, Lucian and Lara followed him closely.
Lucian pulled the heavy grate open and they jumped into the drainage tunnel. The dirty water reached their knees and smelled awful but it was the only way out, the other prisoners climbed down after them.
Lara stayed near the entrance and did a quick count with her empathic gift.
Lara hugged herself. “Thirty-one. Only thirty-one made it out.”
Lucian stopped in the dirty water. “Where is Roderic?”
Lara looked back at the burning hallway. “He and five others stayed to block the remaining Elite Sisters so the weak ones could run.”
Lucian hit the tunnel wall hard with his fist.
He knew Roderic made his choice and going back would ruin the sacrifice.
They waded through the dark tunnel for a long time.
The water was freezing and the mud made every step difficult, rats swam past their legs in the dark.
Raziel kept his breathing steady and carried Mirael the whole way.
His new class kept his muscles from failing but he felt a strange emptiness in his chest.
He didn’t feel sad for the dead ones, just processed it as a tactical loss.
Finally, they reached the end and stepped out into the cold night air.
They were at the edge of the forest right next to the river.
They turned around and looked up at the hill.
St. Sophia Sanatorium was consumed by flames, the perfect white marble towers collapsed one by one with loud crashes.
The prison was completely gone.
Raziel set Mirael down gently on the grass, was breathing but she was deeply unconscious.
Lucian sat on a rock and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
Lara hugged her own arms and watched the fire.
They survived.
But they didn’t kill everyone.
Deep in the woods, far from the burning building and the river, a figure ran through the trees.
Angelina stumbled over a thick root and fell hard into the mud.
She still wore Sister Elena’s face but it was ruined.
Her nose bled heavily and her clothes were covered in dirt, she managed to break out of Lara’s panic attack just in time to escape the fire.
She crawled to a tree and leaned her back against the rough bark.
She pulled out a small communication crystal, it pulsed with a faint red light in the darkness of the forest.
She squeezed it tight and waited for the magical connection.
Angelina spat a glob of blood onto the grass. “Seraphina! We have a problem.”
The crystal hummed and vibrated in her hand.
Angelina glared at the red light. “The bastard evolved.”
