Chapter 81: It’s a beautiful night
Finding himself surrounded by the figures, Adam moved quickly and found himself on one of the rooftops; the figures followed him almost instantly.
He sensed a murderous intent emanating from each of the figures chasing him, but he didn’t care in the least. Adam looked down at the streets, littered with corpses.
He let out a long sigh.
He remembered that, in his past life, he had heard about the scandal that would occur several months later, in which Princess Alexandra was involved and had been killed in the attack.
No one ever found out which force or kingdom was behind the attack; the truth never came to light. Besides, he didn’t think much of it anyway.
Ahh, it seems I have no other choice.
Adam looked away from the streets:
“Asterin, what do you think of this?”
Asterin scanned the streets with her golden eyes and replied:
“They’re quite organized; they set up a barrier and then vanished without a trace.”
Adam nodded in agreement and said loudly enough to be heard:
“So, you’ll have to let me handle them, right?”
After saying those words, he vanished from the scene, leaving only an afterimage behind. The next moment, he appeared behind one of them: the sword came down swiftly and sliced him in two.
Inner organs and blood splattered across the floor.
Adam moved again and appeared in front of another enemy. The enemy tried desperately to defend himself, but Adam felt the blade of Repentance glide smoothly through the air, severing his arm before piercing his eyes and plunging into his throat.
He watched as the body fell heavily to the ground, lifeless.
The others finally reacted and launched their attack. Adam, with his hands behind his back, moved calmly, dodging each attack with smooth, precise steps. Suddenly, he leaped forward and delivered a brutal kick to the stomach of one of them.
He heard a groan of pain.
Another enemy rushed past him and lunged at Adam, swinging his daggers in a series of rapid slashes. When he was close enough, Adam felt him attempt a low blow straight to his groin.
But he reacted with a nimble leap, dodging the attacks as he moved from side to side. In midair, he reached out a hand and, without hesitation, landed three straight punches to the attacker’s face.
He felt the brutal impact against his knuckles: he saw teeth flying, blood staining the air, and the man falling backward with a choked scream.
Before the two attackers could get back to their feet, Adam moved so quickly that he decapitated them both and watched as their heads took a few seconds to fall, leaving a trail of blood as they plummeted from the ceiling.
With the corpses behind him, Adam gazed at the moon, letting the breeze ruffle his hair.
“It’s a beautiful night.”
He sensed more figures appearing on the roof of the house. He caught a glimpse of his companions’ bodies.
Adam turned his head at the sense of murderous intent; he didn’t seem the least bit surprised.
“Sir, I apologize for disturbing you at this hour of the night.”
One of the group members stepped forward.
Adam looked at the man. He had brown hair, brown eyes, and a scar on his lips; he was muscular and stood about 6 feet 1 inch tall.
Adam raised an eyebrow in mild surprise; he hadn’t expected that level of politeness.
“Sir Knight? For assassins, you have good manners.”
He heard the man let out a laugh.
“Hahaha, a mid-ranking knight is someone who deserves respect; it’s the least I can show.”
“Oh…”
He feigned surprise, but it was obvious he was lying.
“Aren’t you a mid-ranking knight too? In that case, I suppose I should show you some respect.”
He heard the man laugh.
“Hahaha, how polite of you; we’d get along just fine; otherwise, I’d have to kill you.”
Just as the man was speaking.
Adam seized the moment, vanishing and reappearing in the blink of an eye, attacking the brown-haired man head-on.
He saw how the man managed to react in time, crossing his daggers to block the sword’s thrust.
CLANG!
The metallic clang rang out, echoing throughout the area and into the night filled with heart-wrenching screams.
Adam watched as the brown-haired man clenched his jaw, bearing the weight of the sword as it came down on him mercilessly.
He noticed the man grip the daggers more tightly, saw his veins bulge, and, with a fierce shove, sent him flying backward. Adam felt the impact push him back a few inches, just enough for the other man to catch his breath and brace himself.
“Attack!” he roared furiously at his subordinates.
But Adam heard only silence. He watched as none of them moved; it was as if they had turned into statues.
He saw the man frown. It was then that, one after another, his subordinates began to split in two.
Adam watched as the bodies fell grotesquely onto the roof of the house, which remained oblivious to everything that was happening.
He watched as the man’s eyes widened in surprise and a hint of fear. Adam knew he hadn’t realized when his subordinates had been killed.
What happened was simple. Adam, in a brief moment of hesitation, attacked them all, using all his speed, for he wasn’t foolish enough to leave the group intact.
They outnumbered him.
The smartest move was to take them out first and then deal with the leader.
Adam felt his body become covered in a thin layer of mana.
At the same time, he watched as the brown-haired man became enveloped in silvery mana.
He saw his expression harden and his eyes gleam coldly, like those of a newly unsheathed sword.
They stared at each other in silence. Adam felt the night breeze ruffle his hair, which fluttered like flags on a battlefield.
Two figures stood facing each other, both shrouded in energy: one, surrounded by black mana; the other, glowing with an unbreakable silver radiance.
They were both of equal rank.
Two mid-ranking knights were about to face off.
…
Elsewhere in the city, with the moon high in the sky like a silent watchman, Alexandra sat cross-legged on a rooftop.
She had tried to run, but when she saw the barrier form, she stopped and decided to wait for them to come and attack her. She knew this attack was aimed at her.
She wasn’t stupid enough not to realize it.
“Ahh, the night was so beautiful.”
Alexandra turned her head to the side, where her maid Mira held a large spear with an extra blade painted on it; to her, it looked more like a scythe than a spear.
“Princess, are you sure you’re going to be attacked?”
Alexandra gazed at the city with an indifferent expression as the shouts reached her ears.
“They’re coming; ever since I arrived in this city, I’ve felt like I’m being watched; that’s why I asked the baron to assign me a guard.”
She saw Mira’s expression turn serious as she sensed several presences nearby. She felt there were about twenty or more.
In short, she felt they were surrounded.
“This is going to be a pretty long night…”
Alexandra stretched her body as she circulated the mana essence that completely enveloped her.
She noticed that the same thing was happening to Mira, who was watching the figures appearing in the moonlight.
She heard one of them speaking to her.
“Princess Alexandra, why don’t you just give in and make things easier for yourself? We won’t hurt you; we’ll play with your body until we get tired of it.”
Alexandra looked at him. She saw his arrogant smile and lecherous gaze, and she knew exactly what this man was imagining he would do to her.
However, despite those words, her expression remained unchanged. She was indeed weighing her chances of survival, but suddenly an idea occurred to her.
She felt a faint smile appear on her impassive face, but now she had another problem: she had to get rid of all the stalkers.
The man spoke again.
“Why are you so quiet, princess? Are you perhaps considering my wonderful offer? At least we won’t kill you—you’ll just be our slave.”
Alexandra watched him smile broadly as he licked his lips.
She pushed her thoughts aside and fixed her gaze on the man dressed in a black suit, perfect for a murder. Without a second thought, she launched her attack.
She felt herself closing the distance between her and the assassin in the blink of an eye. She swung her rapier swiftly, unleashing a flurry of attacks.
She saw the assassin react just in time, leaping to the side, but as he tried to escape, Alexandra realized he hadn’t noticed that he’d thrown himself straight into certain death.
She watched as Mira also appeared with her weapon. With a clean, precise movement, she saw her decapitate the assassin.
Alexandra watched as the head rolled across the roof, leaving behind a crimson trail that stained the dark tiles.
Before the others could react, Alexandra and Mira had already run down from the roof. She knew staying put was impossible: they were outnumbered, and mobility was their only advantage.
She felt the other assassins running after them in the moonlight, leaping from rooftop to rooftop. Alexandra knew they wanted to catch up to them and kill them, since capturing them wasn’t an option yet.
