Chapter 146: Saphira
The storm thickened as the monstrous horde scattered in fiery fragments across the Demon Kingdom’s skies.
With Arannis’ command ringing in their minds, every student scrambled to retreat toward their carriages, the echo of his voice laced with authority that tolerated no hesitation.
Every student could tell that this mini-test Arannis was conducting had turned serious at the appearance at that humungous, dangerous beast behind the clouds staring at them, and they followed his instructions seriously.
Lucian and Miranda were the last to pull back, covering the retreat with bursts of radiant energy and temporal shields.
The final wyvern fell burning toward the chasms below as the last of the students secured themselves inside.
The carriages stabilized, runes shifting from crimson to calm azure as the Spectral Horses slowed to a hover, their translucent hooves pawing at empty air.
Inside the Human carriage, tension pressed on every breath. Zeus leaned forward, sweat still gleaming down his jaw, his knuckles white around the haft of his axe.
Elara’s fingers twitched against her lap as her spectral map faded from her eyes. The beast beyond the clouds was far too powerful for her to sense using her Gift. It completely overrode her senses and she had to stop before receiving dangerous backlash.
No one spoke.
Only Albedo remained still, his expression unreadable as he sent Ember back to the contracted pet space to recharge her energy.
The battle’s adrenaline still thrummed in his veins, but it wasn’t the monsters that had him on edge, it was that presence. That immense, suffocating pressure that even now pulsed faintly through the air, thick as liquid gravity.
And then, he felt it. A ripple of magic, vast and ancient, moving through the storm ahead.
Outside, through the swirling clouds of violet and smoke, two silhouettes moved forward, Arannis and Raphaeline.
Arannis’ voice, calm but solemn, rang through the air once more. “Stay put, all of you. What lies ahead is beyond your comprehension.”
Then the link snapped.
The silence left in its wake was almost painful.
***
Arannis’ emerald cloak whipped violently as he and Raphaeline rose through the black clouds, their forms outlined in faint magic.
Arannis’ staff thrummed with emerald light, while Raphaeline’s wings stretched wide, shedding faint crimson radiance that cut through the gloom.
“Can you feel it?” she said quietly, her voice low and cold.
“Of course,” Arannis replied, his eyes narrowed. “I would have to be blind not to. That aura…I haven’t experienced it in quite a long time,”
They ascended further, and the clouds grew impossibly thick, dense with static energy. Lightning flashed between the mists, blue and gold, illuminating for a brief instant an enormous, scaled shadow.
Then the darkness split open.
Two colossal eyes burned through the clouds, molten gold rimmed with sapphire flame. Their pupils contracted, each the size of a carriage itself, focusing directly on the two intruders.
The very air seemed to hold its breath.
“Arannis,” a voice boomed—not from the air, but from the soul. Every syllable carried the weight of storms, the harmony of creation and ruin, “And Raphaeline Cortezia. It has been…quite some time.”
The clouds dispersed as the being stirred, revealing who it was.
In front of the two of them was a gigantic Chaos Dragon. The Dragon’s form stretched for miles, a serpentine behemoth of iridescent scales that shimmered between blue, violet, red and molten gold.
The Dragon’s wings alone were larger than most gigantic buildings. Each wing was veined with cosmic light that pulsed like a living nebulae. The storm itself bent around her presence, her breaths sending ripples of chaos through the atmosphere.
Raphaeline’s lips parted, her composure faltering for the first time in decades, “Saphira,” she whispered, “What in the realms are you doing here?”
Even she, the Demon Princess and one of the few beings who had faced gods, lowered her tone with the reverence one would offer a force of nature.
Arannis bowed his head respectfully, “Your kind rarely leaves the Dragon Isles,” he said carefully. “Appearing within the Demon Kingdom unannounced it quite unusual as well,”
“Oh please, I know that old man Kael won’t be happy, I’ll handle him later,” Saphira said, casually dropping the name of the Demon King as she continued speaking, “But this trip isn’t for fun. It’s quite necessary,”
Her vast body coiled lazily through the storm, the sheer motion sending cracks through the sky as thunder boomed far below. When she next spoke, her voice resonated through both elf and demon alike, layered with unearthly calm.
“I was hunting,” she said, her gaze flickering across the distant carriages like a goddess observing mortals, “Something foul has appeared in the Dragon Isles that required out attention. It seeped through the region, an abyssal pulse. Small, but persistent. It led me here.”
Raphaeline’s brow furrowed, “An Abyssal influence? Within the airspace of the Kingdom?”
“Indeed.”
Saphira’s gaze turned downward, the great golden orbs narrowing faintly. “But the corruption was not my only discovery. Amidst your flock of little mortals and Elves… I sensed something else.”
Her tone changed then, curiosity blooming like a flame behind the words. “A spark that does not belong. Something ancient, resonant. The pulse of a Dragon Heart.”
The air itself froze. Even Arannis stiffened, his mind racing. “A Dragon Heart?” he echoed. “You’re certain?”
Saphira’s laughter shook the heavens. “You doubt my senses, Elf?” she said, a hint of amused danger in her voice. “It beats not within a dragon, but within one of your precious students. You’ve garnered quite a special group of talents haven’t you,”
She extended one claw, a movement so vast it seemed to shift the clouds themselves. From her palm shimmered a projection, woven light and magic, taking shape before them like a mirage.
The illusion solidified. Albedo Neverwinter stood suspended in air, his pale hair glinting faintly with blue flame, eyes half-lidded, calm as still water. Around him, faint echoes of runes shimmered, echoes of the Bridge, of Fractal Casting, and something deeper. Something alive.
Raphaeline’s crimson eyes narrowed, “Him?” she breathed,
“Out of everyone, why am I not surprised it’s him,” Arannis commented.
“The heart has already merged with him,” Saphira said softly, her immense head lowering until her eyes met the illusion directly. “It sings through every spell he casts, every breath he takes. It’s a perfect merger,”
The Dragon’s lips curved slightly, a smile both beautiful and terrifying. “And his aura… ah. How long has it been since I’ve felt something like that? He carries both the scent of death… and the echo of creation. I am intrigued.”
Arannis’ grip tightened on his staff. “Saphira,” he began carefully, “if you intend to harm the boy, ”
The Dragon’s laughter rolled like thunder, sending waves of light rippling through the clouds. “Harm him? Oh, old man. You misunderstand me. I do not destroy what fascinates me. I only observe.”
A pulse of light trembled through the clouds, and then her immense form began to change.
The air rippled as her scales broke apart into cascading shards of color, red, violet, gold, and blue, that shimmered like falling embers. E
ach fragment swirled inward, collapsing her vast serpentine body into a blinding core of radiant energy. Thunder rolled. Lightning converged around her like reverence made visible.
Then, with one final surge, the light burst outward, and from it stepped a woman.
She was tall, at least seven feet, with the kind of presence that bent reality around her.
Muscular, but carved in divine symmetry, her body bore the lingering power of the Dragon she had been. Her skin was marked with tattoos that pulsed faintly like living flame: crimson and violet runes weaving down her arms and thighs, flowing in molten gold patterns that shimmered when she moved.
Her hair cascaded past her hips, a radiant wave of rainbow hues that caught every flicker of lightning above, and her eyes retained the same burning molten gold as before, endless and alive.
The gown she wore shimmered like liquid starlight, a luminescent fabric that shifted with every motion, flowing around her curves in waves of cosmic beauty. Each step she took seemed to sing faintly, the air itself parting in reverence.
Raphaeline blinked, momentarily struck speechless. “…You never fail to be dramatic. It’s been a while since I’ve seen you in this form,”
Saphira smirked, running a hand through her shimmering hair. “When you are born from creation itself, dear Princess, it is difficult to be anything less.”
Her gaze softened slightly, her voice lowering as her attention seemed to turn inward, “The trace I followed… it leads to The Garden of Perpetual Blooming Agony, same place you’re going,”
She looked up at the darkened heavens then, eyes burning with quiet curiosity. “That boy,” she said softly. “Albedo Neverwinter. His soul hums with the rhythm of something long lost, a note of divinity swallowed by mortality. I will see it for myself.”
Raphaeline floated closer, her crimson eyes sharp. “You intend to follow us?”
“Follow?” Saphira chuckled, her teeth flashing in a way that was both elegant and predatory. “No, dear Princess. I will accompany you. There is a difference. I’ll find what I’m looking for, and you’ll continue on your little trip. Win win.”
The sky shuddered faintly around her as though the world itself acknowledged her words.
“And if I say no?” Arannis asked.
Saphira turned her molten eyes toward him, and for an instant, he swore the air itself forgot to move. Her smile was slow and devastating, her tone lilting with the kind of ancient amusement that only beings older than continents could wield.
“Oh, Arannis,” she said softly, “you’ve known me for centuries. When have I ever asked permission?”
With that, she turned away, her hair catching the lightning in radiant streaks as she began to descend toward the swirling horizon below, toward the students, toward Albedo.
Raphaeline and Arannis exchanged a look, neither speaking for a long while.
Finally, Raphaeline exhaled, rubbing her temples. “You realize this complicates everything.”
Arannis nodded faintly, his eyes following the Dragon-turned-woman’s silhouette as she vanished into the storm. “It always does, when Dragons take interest in mortals.”
Lightning flashed again, and for a fleeting instant, the clouds parted, revealing Saphira’s radiant figure walking effortlessly across the sky, each step rippling the clouds beneath her feet like molten glass.
Her voice drifted back to them, soft but carrying with ease through the tempest.
“Do not fret, my friends. I will not harm your little fledglings… unless, of course, they give me reason to.”
