Chapter 228 – Talk between Wednesday and Enid
Shortly after, Natasha returned with Simon and Nick.
As soon as they entered the room, Wednesday’s cousins froze at the sight of her.
Wednesday was sitting on a chair next to the bed, focused on stitching the wound on her side. Her black-and-white sweater, covered in blood and cuts, was folded on the table, leaving her in just a black bra as she worked on her skin with a needle and thread.
Simon and Nick immediately averted their eyes.
“We didn’t see anything!” Simon said, raising his hands in innocence.
“Exactly, nothing at all,” Nick quickly added. “We don’t want Luke to kill us when he wakes up.”
Wednesday rolled her eyes.
“Luke is unconscious. And even if he were awake, I doubt the first thing he’d do is attack you over something so insignificant,” she said in her usual indifferent tone.
Still, she finished the last stitch, bit the thread to cut it, and stood up. She walked to her wardrobe, took out a fresh piece of clothing, and put it on.
“Happy now?” Wednesday asked, raising an eyebrow as she adjusted her clothes and sat back down next to Luke.
“Completely,” Simon replied, still avoiding looking directly at her.
“Good. Now that you’ve gotten over your modesty crisis, let’s talk,” Wednesday said, crossing her arms.
“Where are my father and my uncles?” she asked.
They were the ones who were supposed to be here helping. The real reinforcements, no offense to her cousins and Lurch, but that was the reality.
“Your father and Uncle Fester were intercepted by two hooded figures… They were really powerful if they could stop those two,” Nick answered seriously.
“And my dad… you know him, he was at home buried in paperwork, probably sleeping or something.”
“Hooded figures?” Wednesday repeated, already having an idea of who they might be.
“Yeah, your father laughed while calling them ‘demonic old men’ and managed to create an opening for us to escape and come here to help,” Simon nodded.
“One of them had a hunchback. How old do you think he is? Damn, a psychic who’s surpassed the one-hundred-fifty-year barrier,” Nick said, rubbing his chin.
“Thanks to demonic powers,” Wednesday muttered, glaring at her cousin.
“I know, I know, I’m just saying,” Nick said with a shrug, one of the few who didn’t fear Wednesday’s icy tone and glare.
“It can’t be Edward,” Natasha said, and Wednesday nodded.
Edward was the final boss. The one who started everything and murdered Edgar Allan Poe. A psychic who must have surpassed 220 years.
‘Who’s that?’ Enid thought, losing track of the conversation.
“It must be one of Elliot’s grandfathers, the ones who were presumed dead but are actually alive, with demonic powers,” Wednesday said, and everyone nodded, except for Enid, who wasn’t familiar with the forces of the Spellman family.
“Considering Uncle Fester and Uncle Gomez’s strength, it won’t take them long to get here,” Nick commented, and his brother couldn’t help but nod.
Their two uncles were true monsters, immensely powerful and lovers of death matches. He couldn’t see them losing to those two old men from the Spellman family, no matter how ancient or powerful they were.
“We shouldn’t underestimate these demon-powered elders… but I agree with you. They’ve been in the shadows for too long, and I doubt they can keep up with my father and Uncle Fester,” Wednesday said.
Nick nodded and yawned at the same time. It was past three in the morning, and he was exhausted after running here at full speed and fighting Gabriel Spellman.
After Natasha told them they could sleep in the guest room, they left. She also went to bed after giving Luke one last glance.
Wednesday and Enid were left alone in the room with Luke, who looked like he was sleeping peacefully, like an angel.
Wednesday, who had been staring intently at Luke, shifted her gaze toward Enid, who met her eyes. The room was silent, with only the soft, rhythmic sound of Luke’s breathing breaking the stillness.
“I saw your death in a vision,” Wednesday said in her monotone, icy voice.
“What do you mean?” Enid asked, seeking more details. She was aware of Wednesday’s violet aura.
“When we fought together against the lesser demons at Petropolus Manor, we touched backs, and I had a vision of you dying, here, in Sunnyvale,” Wednesday explained.
“Mm… So, you told me to come here just so that vision would come true and I’d die, right?” Enid said, raising an eyebrow, never looking away from her.
Wednesday nodded without blinking, without a trace of regret on her face.
Enid let out a short, almost bitter laugh. “That’s… the most Wednesday Addams thing I’ve ever heard,” she said with a slight smile, shaking her head.
Wednesday’s expression remained impassive, but she hadn’t expected that response.
“You’re not angry?” Wednesday asked, curious.
“No. What, did you expect me to freak out? I know how you are, Wednesday. I’m not surprised you tried to get rid of me like this.”
Her response left Wednesday silent for a moment.
“Besides, I get it. If someone were after Luke and I were his girlfriend, I would’ve done the same,” Enid added before Wednesday could say anything.
Wednesday tilted her head slightly, observing her more closely. That wasn’t the kind of response most people would give.
Enid’s obsession with Luke was… admirable, Wednesday couldn’t help but think, though she would never say it out loud.
“So, you’re saying that deep down, you don’t hate me for this?” Wednesday asked.
“I don’t hate you… but someone else might,” Enid said with a faint smile, one rarely seen on her face, it seemed cold, calculating.
“Luke?” Wednesday raised an eyebrow.
“Yes,” Enid replied, her smile fading. Her tone grew more serious, almost calculating.
“You know Luke can kill without a second thought if he sees someone as an enemy, no matter how insignificant they are… But tonight, this very night, he chose not to kill two people because of me. You have to admit that, somewhere in his mind, I still hold a place in him,” Enid said, smiling, though it didn’t reach her eyes.
Wednesday didn’t respond immediately.
“If he finds out what you did, if he finds out you planned to send me to my death, how do you think he’ll react?” Enid continued. “Do you think he’ll just brush it off as part of your gothic charm? Or do you think, for the first time, there will be a real crack in whatever it is you have with him?”
For the first time, Wednesday saw something in Enid she had never noticed before. Something calculating. Something cold.
Wednesday wasn’t easily surprised, but this time, she was.
“I didn’t expect this from you,” Wednesday admitted. She hadn’t expected such a threat from Enid.
“I learned something after being with Luke… and after being your roommate,” Enid said with a faint smile, but there was no warmth in her voice.
Wednesday tilted her head with interest.
“Do whatever you want. If you want, tell him when he wakes up,” Wednesday said, unfazed.
When she told Enid about the vision, she had, of course, already considered this outcome, though she hadn’t anticipated witnessing Enid threatening her like that.
She was also surprised that Enid had managed to stop Luke from killing two people. Most likely, she was referring to the half-blood vampires, the ones who had been his companions in Shadyside.
“I won’t,” Enid said, returning to her normal tone.
“Why?” Wednesday asked, narrowing her eyes.
“What’s the point? In the end, you saved me, and Luke will understand that. But I have to ask, why did you decide to save me in the end?” Enid asked.
She recalled the one moment where she could have died, when Gabriel’s sword of fire and wind was about to pierce her, and she had no way to dodge it, as she was mid-air.
“Because you were still useful to me,” Wednesday answered simply.
“Useful? I don’t think so,” Enid replied bluntly.
Wednesday didn’t react, maintaining her indifferent expression. But Enid didn’t stop there.
“You could have killed Gabriel in that moment. He was completely focused on me. At the very least, you could have seriously injured him. If you had, even if you didn’t kill him, you would have had a real chance of holding your own in a one-on-one fight until your cousins and your butler arrived to help you,” Enid said confidently.
Wednesday said nothing, and that only made Enid doubt her more, doubt her choice to save her.
“You didn’t save me because I was useful. You saved me because you hesitated, a brief moment of compassion… Whoa… Who would’ve thought?” Enid said in a surprised tone.
Wednesday stared at her, her gaze empty and dark as always. But deep down, she knew Enid was right.
She would never admit it, of course.
“You have an interesting imagination,” Wednesday finally said, her tone dry, her face expressionless.
Enid didn’t press further. She knew that, with Wednesday’s personality, it was impossible for her to admit such a thing. Silence settled in the room.
Luke remained motionless, unconscious, a sleeping angel, oblivious to the conversation unfolding beside him.
“And now, what will you do?” Wednesday asked, breaking the silence.
She wanted to know if Enid would keep chasing after Luke or what the hell she was planning to do. She couldn’t read her as easily as before.
“I won’t chase after him anymore,” Enid replied, sighing with a somber expression for the first time.
Wednesday looked at her again, this time with a glimmer of curiosity in her expression.
“Why?”
“Because I saw it… How he looked at me when we reunited. How he kept his distance. And even though I know I still have a place in his heart, Luke has already made his decision, and that decision is you,” Enid answered, lowering her gaze. Even though it hurt to admit it, it was the truth.
‘Another decision I didn’t expect from her,’ Wednesday thought, surprised once again, though her face didn’t show it.
“I see,” Wednesday said with a nod.
“But if you’ll allow it, I’ll keep helping in the war. You always say I’m useful, does that bother you?” Enid asked with a faint smile.
“You would fight for someone you can no longer have… That’s not very logical,” Wednesday said, narrowing her eyes.
“I know. Even if I won’t chase after him, he’s still important to me, and I want to help him. But that doesn’t mean I’ll talk to him or stick by his side, don’t worry,” Enid said.
“Fine,” Wednesday agreed. “I’ll tell you what to do to help. You won’t speak to Luke directly.”
Enid was a great asset and ally for the war. She had managed to put up a fight, albeit in a two-on-one, against Gabriel Spellman, a powerful psychic. Her strength would only continue to grow, especially after this battle.
“Alright. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to get some sleep… and then I’m leaving before my mother arrives,” Enid said with a sigh. She had run away from home and had been absent from Nevermore for a month.
“You’re not going to wait to talk to Luke?” Wednesday asked, tilting her head slightly.
Enid shook her head. Her expression remained neutral, but there was something in her gaze, a mix of resignation and determination.
“No. Not this time.”
And with those words, she turned and left the room without looking back.
Once Enid was gone, Wednesday turned off the lights and lay down beside Luke, curling up next to him.
