Chapter 50: Elena
Chapter 50
Lucian’s fingers extended into sharp, black claws as the Sentinel thundered toward him. Intent on grinding him into the tree silt, the beast lunged—but Lucian didn’t retreat.
He lunged right back, he snatched up the broken trunk of the tree he had just shattered. He swung the massive timber like a club, channeling his royal strength into the arc.
The wood connected with the Sentinel’s jaw with a sickening thud. The beast’s head whipped to the side, teeth flying into the mist as its massive frame staggered.
Lucian didn’t give it a heartbeat to recover. He dropped the trunk and launched himself forward, his claws digging into the creature’s thick body.
He began to climb the monster, shredding through muscle and matted fur, pulling himself upward toward the throat.
His crimson eyes were locked on the skeletal head, his mind a roar of focused intent. He reached the Sentinel’s massive shoulder, his hand raised to strike at the base of its skull and compel it once more.
But the beast was no longer the sluggish puppet he had fought in the cave. With a speed that defied its size, the Sentinel’s massive, clawed hand whipped upward.
It caught Lucian mid-strike, its fingers wrapping around his torso like iron bands.
Before Lucian could sink his claws into the creature’s wrist, the Sentinel slammed him downward.
Lucian hit the earth with enough force to create a fresh crater. The air was driven from his lungs, his vision splintering into a thousand shards of white light.
The ground groaned under the pressure, the dirt turning to mud beneath him as the Sentinel’s weight followed, pinning him deep into the floor of the clearing.
Through the haze of pain, Lucian glanced toward the hole that still stood open nearby—a silent witness to his struggle.
Above him, the creature’s jaw unhinged, strings of black, acidic saliva dripping onto Lucian’s torn top as it prepared to tear his throat out.
Lucian’s vision swam. The pain was a dull roar, but beneath it, the silence of the bond was what truly burned.
He could now feel Isabella’s terror vibrating through the very air, muffled by the veil, and the thought of her witnessing his defeat through the Vail ignited a spark of power.
He stopped fighting the weight. He stopped trying to claw at the iron-like fingers crushing his ribs.
Instead, he went unnaturally still. The Sentinel paused, its skeletal head tilting, confused by the sudden lack of resistance.
It leaned closer, its one glowing eye hovering mere inches from Lucian’s face.
In that heartbeat of proximity, Lucian’s crimson eyes flared, not with rage, but with a terrifying, absolute command.
He reached out with his mind, not to Clara’s magic, but to the demon-blood that animated the beast’s marrow.
He forced his way past any witch’s strings, tracing the scent of the blight back to the creature’s core.
The Sentinel froze. The low growl in its chest died into a confused whimper. Lucian’s hand, though pinned, twitched, his fingers brushing the matted fur of the creature’s throat.
He channeled the weight of his centuries, the authority of a King who had seen empires crumble, into a spike.
“You are mine,” he projected, “The strings are cut.” The violet light in the Sentinel’s eye flickered, fighting the intrusion.
Dark shadows quickly moved out from the open hole, moving towards Lucain pinned body in quick movements.
The Mother’s power was a scream of command, but Lucian found the anchor of the bond—the tiny spark of witch’s spirit that still lived in the monster—and he shielded it, wrapping it in his own shadow.
He looked straight into the void of the beast’s eye, his gaze locking it into a state of paralysis.
“Bow.”. The effect was violent. The Sentinel’s muscles jerked as if struck by lightning. The crushing pressure on Lucian’s chest vanished as the creature’s massive arms buckled.
The moving shadows recurled as if struck. The twelve-foot titan collapsed to its knees, its massive head slamming into the mud at Lucian’s laying feet.
Lucian stood up slowly, wiping a smear of black blood from his jaw, his crimson eyes never leaving the submissive beast.
He stepped toward the bowing Sentinel and placed a hand on its muzzled head. The creature shuddered but didn’t move.
“Let us go see your mistress.” he whispered, his gaze shifting to the open hole in the air—the gateway back to the cabin.
With a flick of his wrist, the Sentinel rose, but its one eye was no longer orange. It was a cold, vengeful red, perfectly matching the eyes of its new master.
Lucian didn’t hesitate. He stepped toward the rift, the Sentinel following at his shoulder like a loyal nightmare.
Meanwhile, inside the cabin, Isabella and Clara were slammed against the floorboards as the illusion of the sky shattered, forcing them to reality.
The Mother let out a shriek of genuine agony, clutching her head as the feedback from the broken bond with her hound tore through her mind.
“Impossible! He is a vampire! He cannot command the blood of the demon-wolf!” she hissed, the void in her eye sockets swirling with chaotic light as she used every ounce of power to take her hound back.
Lucian slacked into the room, his long hair swept back, his coat tattered and stained with the Sentinel’s blood.
Behind him, the massive, skeletal head of the Sentinel dipped into the room, its red eye fixed on the Mother with a predatory hunger that made her void eyes widened.
Isabella, still pinned to the wall by the fading shadows, felt the bond in her chest explode into a white-hot roar of rage when Lucain sets his eyes on the room.
Lucian’s eyes found hers across the wreckage of the room. He didn’t speak to her but the look in his eyes promised a reckoning that would burn the forest to ash.
“So it’s you, Elena.” Lucian voice dropped to a frequency that made the glass in the windows literally crack.
