Chapter 79: Chapter 79: The Demon’s Invitation
“SHE’S A SUCCUBUS.”
Shock rippled through her as the weight of the words sank in, leaving her momentarily breathless.
She stared at Grayson’s profile as he continued to watch the empty driveway, his jaw set in hard lines that spoke of old pain and carefully buried regret.
“A succubus,” Mailah repeated slowly, trying to process this revelation. “But I thought… didn’t you say you deliberately chose human wives? For your abstinence from feeding?”
Grayson’s laugh was bitter, devoid of any humor. “That was the plan. For centuries, it worked perfectly. Materialistic human women who wanted nothing more than financial security and social status. Marriages of pure convenience that allowed me to maintain distance, to avoid any emotional entanglement.”
He finally turned to face her, and the pain in his transformed eyes made her chest tighten with sympathy. “Kassandra was supposed to be just another one of those arrangements. She seemed so perfectly human—shallow, greedy, focused entirely on what my wealth could provide for her. The ideal wife for a demon trying to deny his nature.”
“But she wasn’t human,” Mailah said, understanding beginning to dawn.
“No.” Grayson moved away from the window. “She was exactly what I should have been most wary of. A succubus with enough human blood to mask her true nature, skilled enough in deception to fool even another demon.”
The admission seemed to cost him something, and Mailah could see the way his hands clenched at his sides as though he were fighting some internal battle.
“How did you find out?” she asked gently.
“The same way you nearly died last night,” he said, his voice carrying a weight of self-recrimination that made her want to comfort him despite the careful distance he maintained. “She began to seduce me, to chip away at my defenses bit by bit. I thought it was just… attraction. Something I could control and contain.”
He began to pace the length of the foyer, his movements precise but restless, like a predator testing the boundaries of its cage.
“But succubi are designed to do exactly what she was doing—to awaken desire, to stoke hunger until resistance becomes impossible. She was feeding off my growing need while simultaneously stoking it higher.”
“She was trying to make you break your vow,” Mailah realized.
“More than that.” Grayson stopped pacing, his storm-blue-gray eyes fixing on her with intensity that made her pulse quicken. “She was trying to awaken my incubus nature completely. To force the full transformation that would have made abstinence impossible.”
The parallel to what had happened between them the night before wasn’t lost on either of them.
But where Mailah’s presence had triggered his awakening through genuine connection and desperate need, Kassandra’s manipulation had been calculated.
“She nearly succeeded,” Grayson continued, his voice dropping to barely above a whisper. “There was a night when I came so close to taking everything she offered that I could taste her life force on my tongue. The hunger was… overwhelming. For the first time in centuries, I wanted to feed more than I wanted to maintain my humanity.”
Mailah found herself moving closer despite his earlier warnings, drawn by the raw vulnerability in his confession. “But you didn’t.”
“Only because Lucson chose that moment to pay me a visit,” Grayson said with dark irony. “He took one look at the situation and laughed like it was the most amusing thing he’d ever seen. That’s when I realized what was really happening—that my brothers had sent her.”
The pieces of the puzzle began falling into place in Mailah’s mind. “They orchestrated the whole thing.”
“Every detail,” Grayson confirmed, supernatural energy beginning to pulse visibly beneath his skin. “The carefully crafted persona, the gradual seduction, even her arrival in my life at exactly the right moment when my resolve might have been weakening. It was all designed to force me back into my demonic nature.”
“What did you do?” Mailah asked, though she could guess from the fury radiating from his form.
“I sent her away,” he said simply, but there was nothing simple about the pain that flickered across his features. “Cast her out of the estate, dissolved our marriage, and made it clear that if she ever returned, there would be consequences.”
“And now she’s back,” Mailah observed, understanding finally dawning about the true threat Kassandra represented.
“Now she’s back,” Grayson agreed, “because last night changed everything. My incubus nature is fully awakened now, which means the hunger she tried to stoke two centuries ago is going to be a constant presence. She knows that makes me vulnerable in ways I wasn’t before.”
A shiver coursed through Mailah as the meaning behind his words settled in.
Because as much as she hated to admit it, Kassandra’s offer made a terrible kind of sense.
A succubus would be able to handle an incubus’s feeding needs without the mortal danger that followed Mailah like a shadow.
“She’s offering herself as a solution,” Mailah said quietly.
“She’s offering herself as a trap,” Grayson corrected, his voice carrying absolute conviction. “Whatever game she’s playing now, it’s not about helping me manage my nature. It’s about completing what she started two centuries ago.”
The silence stretched between them after Kassandra’s departure, heavy with unspoken fears and the lingering poison of her words.
Mailah could feel the weight of everything that had been revealed pressing down on her chest—the knowledge that she would never be enough, that she was a fragile human in a supernatural world where her very mortality made her a liability.
“She’s right, isn’t she?” Mailah said quietly, the words slipping out before she could stop them. “About me being too fragile, too human to survive what you need.”
Grayson’s head snapped toward her, his transformed eyes blazing with something fierce and protective. “No. She’s manipulative and calculating, but she’s not right about this.”
But even as he spoke, Mailah could see the doubt flickering in his gaze, the terrible logic of Kassandra’s words taking root despite his protests.
She turned away from him, needing space to process everything that had happened, and began moving toward the kitchen.
Her mind was spinning with images of the stunning succubus, with the casual way she’d offered herself as a solution to all of Grayson’s problems.
The coffee mug she’d abandoned earlier still sat on the counter, and she reached for it with hands that weren’t quite steady. But her fingers, still trembling from the emotional upheaval, couldn’t maintain their grip on the ceramic handle.
The mug slipped from her grasp, tumbling toward the marble floor in what felt like slow motion.
Before she could even react, before she could process that it was falling, Grayson was there.
His supernatural speed carried him across the room in the space between one heartbeat and the next, his hand catching the mug inches from the floor with reflexes that spoke of his newly awakened abilities.
But it wasn’t the rescue that stole her breath—it was the way he’d moved without thinking, without hesitation, his body acting on pure instinct to protect her from even the smallest harm.
When he straightened, the mug safely caught in his palm, they were standing so close she could feel the heat radiating from his skin.
His other hand had come up to steady her, his palm pressed against the small of her back, and suddenly all the careful distance he’d been maintaining evaporated.
“I thought you said we needed to avoid physical contact,” she whispered, but she made no move to step away from him.
His eyes, those storm-blue-gray depths searched her face with an intensity that made her pulse race. “I did say that,” he agreed, his voice rough with something that sounded like longing. “But apparently my subconscious has other ideas.”
The hand against her back pressed her incrementally closer, until she could feel the solid warmth of his chest against hers.
His supernatural energy seemed to wrap around her like silk, no longer threatening but protective, possessive.
“I hope you don’t make a habit of having accidents,” he said softly, his thumb tracing small circles against the fabric of her shirt. “Because if you do, that will mean staying away from you might be impossible.”
His gaze dropped to her lips.
“Grayson,” she breathed, and the sound of his name seemed to break something inside him.
He leaned closer, his breath warm against her skin, and for a moment she thought he was going to kiss her.
The space between them hummed with an almost tangible current.
But at the last second, he pulled back slightly, though his arms remained around her, holding her against him as though she were something precious and breakable.
“I promised you something last night,” he said quietly, his voice carrying undertones that made her skin tingle with awareness. “I promised that we would try to go back to living our lives.”
Mailah nodded, remembering the exact words he said last night.
“But so far,” he continued, a rueful smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, “nothing about today has been even remotely normal. Between my brothers, my ex-wife, and discussions about feeding, I think we’ve gotten a bit off track.”
His hands moved to frame her face, his thumbs tracing the line of her cheekbones with reverent care. “So I’m going to ask you something, and I want you to know that you can say no without any consequences.”
Mailah’s heart began to race, though she couldn’t have said whether it was from anticipation or anxiety. “What?”
The smile that spread across his features was soft and genuinely warm, transforming his face in ways that made her chest tighten.
“Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?” he asked. “Somewhere normal, somewhere human, where we can pretend for a few hours, trying to figure out what comes next.”
The request was so unexpected, so beautifully ordinary after everything that had happened, that for a moment Mailah could only stare at him in wonder.
“A date?” she managed to ask, her voice barely above a whisper.
“A date,” he confirmed, though his eyes held a hint of uncertainty, as though he wasn’t sure she would want such a thing after everything she’d learned about him. “If you’ll have me.”
