—————————————
Third Person POV
North, 298 AC.
—————————————
Jon knew that several hours had passed as Eragon struggled, flapping his wings in the air with them already in the middle of the dry lands of Essos.
The pursuer hadn’t stopped or given up at any moment in chasing them.
Cannibal was not doing well there. His eye was still bleeding, and Eragon’s fangs had also left a continuous bleeding on his neck. But the dragon hadn’t given up, roaring numerous times as they went, entering into the desert.
Jon had passed Braavos and was somewhere between the port city and the Dothraki fields, north of Essos. At least he couldn’t see the Mother of Mountains at that moment through the horizon, but the threat behind him was certainly quite visible.
It was sometime later that he finally found a storm directly in the middle of the sea. He quickly headed there, while Eragon moved northward, and Cannibal followed them.
Shortly after, they were already leaving Essos, heading into the dark clouds, with lightning and all the darkness beneath them. The rain was falling hard below the clouds and the waves in the sea were clearly high.
ROOOOOAAAARRRR
Cannibal’s roar kept coming right behind, while Jon held tight to Eragon’s saddle, bathing in the dark clouds as lightning struck from all sides with Jon heading toward the heart of the storm.
Another roar from the dragon came behind them, matched by the sound of thunder. Cannibal seemed frustrated coming right behind, indicating he would not give up the hunt under any circumstances.
Cannibal kept watching the black clouds with his one eye, searching for the armored dragon. He no longer had a visual on Jon — only lightning and darkness were in front of him.
That left him confused.
He didn’t even notice when a glow appeared behind him. Eragon, with white wings, quickly surged from behind, striking him between the hind legs and making him scream in pain with a burst of red flames.
Eragon passed at high speed, slicing through the air with a shrill sound. That made the black dragon stop immediately, roaring in rage. He soon saw a white glow beside him: it was Eragon again, at high speed in the dragon’s blind spot, hitting the already wounded face, and the flames went directly into the wound Jon had caused, making him roar in pain.
Eragon flew past him again, heading toward the ground. Cannibal quickly followed, but Eragon was already beside him, hitting right in the middle of his chest and making the dragon once again grow furious.
He tried to search for him, but Eragon was already behind, flying at high speed and launching more red fire. Eragon could launch balls of flame that exploded directly on the dragon when using his fire, a different effect from his ice abilities.
Jon was holding tight to Eragon, as the dragon moved at a speed that would throw him backward if not for a good saddle, and kept curving through the sky at high speed with maneuvers, hitting Cannibal in several spots, without giving him a chance to react, inside that black cloud that completely obscured visibility. The only thing Cannibal could see was the white flash of Eragon hitting him with flames and disappearing the next moment.
He tried to release fire as the dragon flew past him. The dragon tried to bite, but Eragon was far too fast. Cannibal kept taking hit after hit. His wounds were burning, and Jon could feel that he was getting weaker and weaker.
Cannibal even tried to release flames in all directions, while, from outside and afar, within the black cloud itself, it was possible to see a new green cloud emerging from within, superheated before the flames began to fade.
At a moment when Eragon was turning, a lightning bolt ended up hitting them as they passed by, while a thunderclap exploded in an electric discharge over Jon and Eragon there.
For a moment, it was hard to endure. Jon gritted his teeth, but the lightning that struck them was just a stroke of bad luck, since the King of Arctic had modified all the Valyrian metal so it wouldn’t conduct electricity, using magical runes.
He had already thought of all the possibilities to weaken the dragon when fighting him in various battlefields, and surely entering storms would be one of his choices, so he had prepared to enter such a place using metal, which could act as a lightning rod and get him roasted or electrocuted if not properly treated.
“That was heavy. Are you okay, buddy?” Jon murmured to Eragon, after the lightning finally dissipated from their bodies.
The dragon fled, however, and Jon decided to press forward, looking at Cannibal in the distance, roaring as he again spat flames in all directions.
He let the dragon tire himself out, trying to think of how he could be more efficient. His gaze went to the tools Eragon carried at his side, while it still seemed that some lightning lingered, a kit of spears.
He saw something interesting.
After all, even the armor plates Eragon was using at the moment didn’t conduct electricity due to some magical modifications, but there was a certain piece of equipment he had brought that conducted far more than it should, precisely doing the opposite effect of what had been placed on the plates.
“We’re going to have to do this, buddy,” Jon murmured, as he passed a plan to Eragon through their mental connection. The dragon seemed to disagree, not fully understanding what Jon was planning to do.
But he obeyed.
“You’re already getting tired. We should bring him down as fast as possible,” Jon gave the order, while quickly reaching to the side and grabbing one of the special spears, entirely made of Elder Metal. They were disposable, but each came with a kind of insulating cloth wrap.
“Let’s go,” Jon said, as he began to unwrap it quickly, looking around, hoping he wouldn’t be struck by lightning while he wielded what looked like a lightning rod with those spears.
Any bolt that hit at that moment would go straight to that spear inside the cloud.
As soon as the black dragon stopped spitting flames, Eragon advanced flying overhead, passing by Cannibal’s side. In a pass, Jon quickly raised his spear and threw it directly into the thick hide of the black beast.
It hit, getting embedded in his skin, and Cannibal seemed slightly bothered, but not more than by the flame explosions Eragon had been unleashing upon him.
“One more time,” Jon decided, while pulling out another spear and quickly darting to the side, hitting beneath his legs, embedding it again, while the dragon tried to chase him. Jon came from the other side, striking a third spear right on top of his tail.
A fifth and sixth spear were embedded in other places, and as Jon saw the lightning beginning to form again, he gave up on embedding a seventh spear, not even picking it up.
The dragon was completely spiked, with six spears stuck in his body. He had already given up on fighting Eragon there.
At that moment, he began trying to escape.
But he wouldn’t have enough time before the entire cloud began to fill with lightning.
Instead of the bolts going to the ground or spreading in all directions, Jon immediately pulled away from Cannibal as much as he could, while lightning passed by him, following all those spears embedded in every part of the beast.
When they struck him directly, the explosion was so intense it even forced Jon and Eragon to shut their eyes, hearing Cannibal’s wailing roar echoing all around.
“We got him…” Jon murmured after his eyes readjusted, as he watched Cannibal simply falling, a strong smell of burned flesh left behind, while he approached where the dragon was crashing down.
“We did it… But we need to move fast,” Jon said, as Eragon surged forward, passing Cannibal, leaving the storm clouds and flying directly more than two thousand meters above the sea.
At Jon’s command, Eragon quickly began freezing the sea as he approached it.
Everything was chaos due to the storm above them, with heavy rain obscuring Jon’s vision through his helmet and thunder rumbling in the distance. Eragon glided and began circling the area, unleashing white flames over the water.
It began to freeze just as Cannibal finally started to fall from the clouds. He didn’t die from that, but he was severely weakened. He had even passed out.
Eragon kept circling the area where he would fall. Jon saw the entire sea churning, and the ice forming and breaking with the waves that kept crashing over the water, while the flames continued to freeze even more as new layers of white fire struck the surface.
When Cannibal fell, he hit a layer of ice, but quickly broke through it, plunging straight into the water.
“Come on, get up!” Jon murmured, worried about the dragon sinking into the sea after the ice couldn’t hold his weight, which took only 30 seconds to cover the 2-kilometer drop from above.
Seeing that the beast would die there, Jon quickly tried to enter the creature’s mind, now finding it easier, beginning to see through his single eye with a surge of adrenaline.
Everything in Jon’s vision now, as he focused completely on the dragon — to the point of even losing sense of his own body — was just the sea beneath him.
Jon forced Cannibal to swim upward as best he could. The giant beast began moving toward the surface, even using his wings to help. Jon wouldn’t let him sink into the ocean like a forgotten animal after all the work he had gone through to begin taming him.
Jon was controlling his mind at that moment, while Cannibal emerged through the hole he had made breaking the ice, trying to hook his claws over the surface.
Eragon continued circling the area around, freezing the sea even more, as Cannibal kept breaking the ice every time he tried to climb onto it, failing because of his massive weight.
Jon kept reinforcing the area, freezing everything, until the beast finally began to rise. An entire block cracked, bending under his weight, but he managed to climb, digging his claws into the wall of ice, finally pulling himself up and staying afloat on a block more than 120 meters wide.
“This is good,” Jon murmured, seeing the dragon below through the heavy rain.
He guided Eragon closer as he landed on the very ice he had created, beginning to freeze it even more — even the part where Cannibal had been — transforming that area into an ice island and connecting it to the platform where the colossal dragon lay, reinforcing it further so the beast wouldn’t fall into the sea again.
Cannibal remained completely weakened.
Other lightning bolts began striking rapidly. They were still being conducted by the spears embedded in the beast, hitting Cannibal as he roared in pain, surrounded by electricity.
“At this rate, he’ll die,” Jon realized.
He still needed the dragon and quickly began freezing him, with Eragon unleashing white flames over him in the middle of the chaotic frozen sea.
The metal that conducted the lightning was quickly covered by ice, creating a layer around the debilitated Cannibal to stop attracting further strikes.
“Get closer,” Jon murmured, as he approached the dragon, staring at him. There was no longer that killing intent in his eyes. Instead, he looked scared and full of fear. His survival instincts must have made his position very clear by now.
Jon was atop Eragon, due to the massive waves crashing against the ice. If a giant wave emerged that he couldn’t handle, he still had Eragon to fly away.
The black dragon roared at Jon, and Jon could feel his desperation. He closed his eyes and focused again. The blood from his nose had already dried, but this time, he didn’t need much more effort to connect directly with the beast all at once using the bond they had created in the cave. He could feel much less resistance — almost as if the dragon was begging for help to survive.
That was the moment he had conquered the mighty Cannibal. The dragon now belonged to him.
However, if the solution to defeat him had been to enter a storm, the problem with keeping him alive was getting him out of the storm. The dragon was there, debilitated, in the middle of the sea, on a platform of ice, now also suffering from the low temperature.
“Let’s go,” Jon had to take off when a massive wave surged over the already frozen ice, breaking parts of it and even crashing into Cannibal.
He thought that would be the end of Cannibal, as the wave passed over the dragon with a small roar of despair, but he remained standing on the ice platform after all.
“We need to do something,” he murmured, while Eragon circled the area and began freezing everything around Cannibal again.
Immediately, he directed Eragon to head north, into the heart of the storm.
Jon was staring intensely at the sea. In the midst of the churning waters, he wished he had Serume right now so he could carry the dragon to the shore.
Unfortunately, that was something he hadn’t planned for, and Serume had been left in the North. Even so, he kept scanning the sea, hoping to find other krakens.
After half an hour, he finally managed to find the sea life he had been hoping for, by some stroke of luck, spotting a pair of them. He asked Eragon to circle for about ten minutes, while he connected with the krakens — without much resistance — and quickly guided them in the desired direction, with Eragon returning to the ice in the middle of the sea, more than forty kilometers away.
The dragon was alive, and Jon took care to keep him from freezing, reinforcing the enormous platform where he lay to prevent it from breaking under the impact of waves.
The giant squids took a while, but finally arrived.
Jon first entered Cannibal’s mind, making the dragon use some of his remaining strength to breathe fire over himself for warmth. Soon after, the squids appeared, breaking the ice and beginning to pull out all the lightning-conducting spears from his body before he could be struck again, using their own tentacles to remove them and discard them into the sea, while circling around the edge of that area.
It took several hours, while Jon himself had stopped atop the black dragon by then, who no longer posed any threat, healing his wounds with his powers as best he could — the ones he and Eragon had caused — while also trying to restore his entire body that had been electrocuted and burned by lightning.
It left Jon quite exhausted in those last few hours, as the dragon recovered a bit of his strength, just as they finally caught sight of Essos, heading there with the krakens carrying the massive dragon from beneath the sea, while Jon remained on Cannibal’s back. Eragon circled overhead. He was also tired, and Jon asked him to rest, sending the white dragon ahead to the continent.
The storm was finally left behind, and Jon could feel the sun hitting his face. Not long after, they finally stopped at the beach, while Jon tried hard to get Cannibal to leave the squids behind, which could no longer follow due to the sea level being too low there, making it impossible for them to continue because of their size.
Eragon was already waiting on the beach, while Cannibal finally began making the effort, separating from the squids and starting to swim, flapping his wings, though unable to take flight in his current condition.
It didn’t take long before he finally managed to plant his feet firmly and began emerging from the water with his enormous body.
Jon felt like an ant at that moment, while the massive dragon shook himself slightly on the beach before simply collapsing onto the ground, exhausted and passing out right there. Jon didn’t mind much. He just climbed off him, carefully avoiding a direct fall from his back, and made his way to Eragon, whose leg was still bleeding.
It was the last thing he intended to do, since Cannibal was already fairly healed. And though he still needed a few more days, Jon would take care of that in Arctic — not here. He just needed the dragon to recover enough to travel north.
Jon had to rip the dented plate off with his sword, knowing that Eragon had been in pain the entire time from it pressing into his flesh.
Even though the wound had healed, the plate pressing against his skin would still cause damage. That was the advantage of having his armor crafted like a puzzle — able to remove any part of the body. So tearing it off there was easy. He just had to make sure the plate was taken back to Arctic — after all, it weighed more than two hundred kilos of Valyrian steel. It was far too valuable to simply leave behind.
Jon looked at the injury, and his heart tightened.
If Eragon hadn’t been wearing that Valyrian steel armor, he would have lost the leg there. And that would certainly have been fatal, with the dragon bleeding out from the wound.
This was practically his son, born of his own soul back when he hatched him. Losing him was not an option for Jon — it would have been devastating.
He was lucky to have come prepared.
After healing Eragon, Jon couldn’t hold on any longer. He simply did the same as Cannibal: he collapsed onto the sand, breathing heavily.
He’d been feeling dizzy ever since he entered Cannibal’s mind, pushing himself to the limit — or maybe from the stress of the battle. It had been too much, even for him.
His family would be horrified by the fight he had just endured with a dragon in the middle of the sky between two continents, stretching all the way into a storm over the open sea.
The krakens left — Jon released them to return north. Unable to take them north without being on a ship, he had already thanked them for bringing Cannibal out of the storm.
Now, Jon couldn’t help but smile as he looked at the enormous black dragon lying there, covering almost the entire beach, the waves crashing against his tail as he lay with his single eye closed.
Jon simply drifted off to sleep, knowing Cannibal was now tamed — if that was still his name. Jon needed to give this dragon a new name. Eragon was tired as well.
All three of them needed rest.
Jon didn’t know how much time had passed with the sun beating down on his face after he had removed his helmet, but he certainly felt a growl from Eragon above him, looking behind him, and quickly sat up.
Even Cannibal lifted his head, his lone green eye turning toward the beach.
Jon was surprised to see a group of Dothraki standing still, looking frightened, clearly intimidated by Eragon, who was growling at them.
It looked like they had seen him approaching, but Eragon hadn’t allowed it quietly and had startled them.
Jon got an idea as he stood and grabbed his helmet, though he didn’t put it back on. He no longer had his shield on his left arm — he had lost it during the battle. He didn’t even know if it was in the North or at sea, and he didn’t care anymore.
“Hey, you! Who is your Khal?” Jon demanded in Dothraki, his voice reaching the startled Dothraki as he passed by Eragon, stepping off the beach and approaching them.
They still looked shaken by the sight of Eragon in full armor. Until one of them looked at Jon cautiously and stepped forward atop his horse.
“My name is Khal Thar. Who are you, stranger? What are these creatures?” the khal asked in the Dothraki tongue.
As he approached, Jon could feel their fear, especially as they stared at the two dragons on the beach, unaware that creatures like these even existed.
“My name is Jon Arctic, king of Arctic. I am known as Khal White Wolf in the Dothraki desert. I faced the greatest Khals and brought them down some time ago. I believe you may have heard of me in Vaes Dothrak,” Jon said, as the men immediately widened their eyes.
“You are the great khal!” they shouted, as murmurs spread among the 200 Dothraki there.
Jon knew how to deal with them, even having gotten to know them well when he had waged war in the Dothraki desert. He had taken a large number of them back to Arctic and placed them in positions where they could breed thoroughbred horses, turning them into war steeds. So he was already somewhat familiar with this people.
“Well, I never asked to be called that. If I ever need to lead the Dothraki… either way, as you can see, this is my true mount: a dragon armored with the rarest metal in the world,” Jon said, pointing to Eragon, while they exclaimed even louder, as if witnessing a god or something of the sort.
“This is my true stallion,” Jon said. “And to conquer the other black stallion, I had to battle him in the sky. As you can see, he’s been tamed as well. I’ll be heading home now, but I need food. I’d like to ask for a large quantity of meat for my two mounts. I will never forget if you do this, and I will reward you in the future. You have my word, Khal Thar,” Jon said in Dothraki, finally lowering his hand from pointing at the dragons.
The khal seemed to admire him at that moment and quickly nodded.
“Of course, great khal! All Dothraki are here to serve you since you defeated the mightiest Khals. And it’s no wonder you are the great khal, to ride such a massive creature,” he said, after all, there was a large saddle over Eragon, not to mention how the beast was covered in metal, ready for war.
The difference between the two dragons also demonstrated the Grand Khal’s mastery — taming a creature more than three times the size.
Jon noticed the fascination they had for him in that moment. He ignored it, unsurprised, as they had likely never seen a real dragon before. Surely, if they ever made it back to Vaes Dothrak alive, they would be telling tales about him.
It didn’t take long for the khalasar, further in the distance, to arrive, coming to greet him — a khalasar of five thousand people.
Jon couldn’t say he was pleased to see slaves, but there was nothing he could do at the moment, as they brought food — cows, sheep, everything they had as Jon requested.
He asked that everything be placed near the beach, and the dragons came forward soon after, finding a mountain of meat and devouring it. Even Cannibal was eating, his mouth soaked in blood, but not attacking Eragon again. Jon now had complete control over him.
He ended up accepting the offer to remain with the khalasar for a few hours while the dragons rested on the beach.
Jon told his story as well — how he fought the black dragon, coming from the other side of the world, battling across the sky until they ended up in a storm over the sea.
The Dothraki listened with shining eyes. Hearing such stories was something that would never leave their minds, since they were so limited to horses in battle. And conquering something that flew in the sky? Listening to such tales would give birth to legends for their people.
They seemed to revere him more than anything. None of them posed a threat. Many asked if he would form a new khalasar, eager to join the giant men they had heard about — those who could defeat entire armies, as had happened with Khal Moro and Khal Drogo some time ago.
It was only the next day, after Jon had slept alongside the dragons resting on the beach, that he finally said goodbye, not without handing over a large amount of gold he had kept with Eragon for emergencies, directly to Khal Thar — to repay even more than a vali for all that had been given to his dragons.
Still, it had been a stroke of luck to find a khalasar that helped him when his dragons were so exhausted.
Jon first went to check on Cannibal, while the whole group of Dothraki watched, not wanting to miss a single moment of his departure and the sight of creatures larger than hundreds of men combined.
Jon’s hand touched the black snout, while the lone eye blinked at him.
“It’s a shame I had to hurt you like that, but there was no other way to win,” Jon said. “I had to do it, both to keep Eragon from losing his leg in the Northern realm, and to reduce your visibility. Meanwhile, I could strike you from within the storm.”
After checking the dragon’s condition, he saw that he would be able to make it to Arctic.
He quickly began preparing for flight. Jon tied the loose Valyrian plate near him, just before Eragon stirred again.
And then he ascended into the sky, with cries and exclamations from the Dothraki as the massive creature took flight — the first of them soaring skyward, followed by Cannibal doing the same, chasing the white dragon as a windstorm swept across the beach.
