Monday evening, November 6th. The first night of the international break. The training ground was empty, the squad scattered to their national teams, and for the second time this season, I had nothing to do and nobody to shout at.

I was lying on the sofa in the penthouse, my head in Emma’s lap.

Her fingers were moving slowly through my hair; absent, rhythmic, the unconscious gesture of a woman who was reading something on her laptop balanced on the armrest and petting her boyfriend like a cat without fully registering that she was doing it.

On the screen, David Jones was settling into the Monday Night Football desk, and the graphic behind him made me push myself upright. Emma’s hand fell from my hair and she made a small noise of protest, but I barely heard it.

Jones turned to Neville. “Gary. You’ve been the cautious one all season. What do you make of these numbers?”

Neville was shaking his head not in disagreement, but in the quiet, reluctant astonishment of a man whose scepticism had been systematically dismantled by evidence. “The numbers are remarkable, David. I can’t deny that. But what strikes me isn’t the points total twenty-three points from eleven matches is excellent, but it’s not unheard of. What strikes me is *how* they’ve got there.”

He stood and walked to the touchscreen, tapping through a series of graphics.

Jones leaned forward. “So what you’re saying is that the depth is the innovation?”

“The depth is the innovation,” Carragher confirmed.

“Most managers in the Premier League have a first eleven and a bench. Walsh has a squad. A real squad. Twenty-eight players who all know the system, who all execute it to the same standard, who can be rotated in and out without the performance level dropping. It’s what Guardiola does at City, except Walsh is doing it with a fraction of the budget.”

Neville nodded. “I’ll add something to that. The set-pieces.”
