Chapter 483: The Morning After

Sunday morning. The day after City. The day Emma had circled.

I woke at eight, the first time in two weeks I hadn’t beaten the sunrise. The bedroom was quiet, the December light grey and soft through the curtains, and for a long, disorienting moment, I didn’t know what was different.

Then I realised: the eyelid wasn’t twitching. The jaw wasn’t clenched. The low hum of anxiety that had been running beneath every waking moment for weeks the frequency so constant that I had stopped noticing it the way you stop hearing traffic was gone. Not replaced by anything. Just absent. The silence of a machine that had been switched off.

Emma was already awake. She was sitting up against the headboard, knees drawn to her chest, a mug of tea in her hands, watching me. Not reading. Not scrolling her phone. Watching me sleep with the patient attention of a woman who had decided that today was the day and had been waiting for me to surface.

“Morning,” I said.

I sat up. Something shifted in her face, the defences she had assembled for this conversation softening, just slightly, at the edges. She took a breath.

“I need to tell you about the podcast,” she said.

She talked. Not for twenty minutes for closer to forty, because this was not a summary of an event but an excavation of a feeling. She told me about the day the offer came. Three weeks ago.

A Thursday. She had been sitting at the kitchen counter, editing her column, when the call came from The Athletic’s head of audio. They wanted a weekly football culture podcast. Fans, identity, the human stories behind the football.

“The Terrace.” Her name on the title card. A production team. Budget for travel, for live recordings at grounds, for interviews with supporters’ groups across Europe. It was the kind of opportunity that legitimised a career, that moved you from “promising columnist” to “established voice.”

She had said she would think about it. Then she had walked into the kitchen, looked at the whiteboard where I had written the December fixtures in red marker, and counted. Leicester, Saturday. Swansea, Wednesday. City, Saturday. Cup quarter-final, Tuesday. Huddersfield, Saturday. Southampton, Boxing Day. West Brom, the following Saturday.

Seven matches in twenty-one days. The recording days would be Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The editing days would be Thursdays.

Which meant that out of every seven days, she would be working on the podcast for three, I would be at the training ground for five, and the remaining days the slivers of overlap where we existed in the same room at the same time would be consumed by match preparation, recovery, travel. They would never see each other. The relationship would become a logistics problem.

So she had called The Athletic back the following Monday and said no. Thank you, but no. Not now. Maybe later.

And she hadn’t told me. Because I was in the middle of the hardest month of the season, and the insomnia was eating me alive, and I had forgotten my mother’s birthday, and I was snapping at my best midfielder on the touchline. Her crisis was smaller than mine. Her sacrifice was quieter. So she had made it alone.

“That’s the part that kills me,” she said, her voice steady but her fingers white around the mug.

“Not that I turned it down. That I didn’t feel I could tell you. Because your world is so loud, Danny, so consuming, so relentless, that there wasn’t space for my thing. And I made that decision alone. And that’s not partnership. That’s sacrifice. And I don’t want to be the one who’s always sacrificing.”

The apartment was quiet. The hum of the refrigerator. The distant murmur of Lordship Lane traffic. The sound of a man hearing something he should have heard three weeks ago.

“I didn’t know, Em.”

“I know you didn’t. That’s the problem.” She wasn’t angry anymore. She had been angry on Wednesday, the “charging station” conversation, the bright eyes, the controlled tears.

Today, she was past anger. She was in the territory that comes after anger, the place where you decide whether to rebuild or to grieve. “I don’t want you to feel guilty. I want you to see me. Not the anchor, not the constant, not the girlfriend who always has the right words and the warm arms. Me. Emma. The woman who is building something of her own and needs the man she loves to notice.”

I put my tea down. I took her free hand. She let me.

“Call them back,” I said.

“What?”

“Call The Athletic. Tell them you want the podcast. If December is the problem, start in January or February. Whenever the fixtures ease. But don’t turn it down for me. I won’t let you turn down your career for mine.”

She looked at me. The green eyes that I had fallen in love with in a freezing car park in Moss Side, when she was nobody’s columnist and I was nobody’s manager, and the world was too small for both of our ambitions.

Those eyes were searching my face now, looking for the difference between a promise made in bed on a Sunday morning and a promise that would survive the first Tuesday night when she wasn’t on the sofa and I came home to an empty apartment.

“It means I won’t be here some evenings,” she said. “Recording, editing. Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I might not be here when you get home from training.”

“Then I’ll make my own tea. I’ll survive.”

“You can’t make tea, Danny.”

“I can boil water.”

“Barely.”

“I’ll learn.”

The ghost of a smile. Small, cautious, testing the air. “And you won’t spiral into a tactical laptop hole at two in the morning because there’s nobody to tell you to go to bed?”

“I’ll set an alarm.”

“You’ll ignore the alarm.”

“I’ll set two alarms.”

The smile became real. She put down her mug, leaned across the bed, and kissed me, not the warm, automatic kiss of the past months, not the performative reassurance of a woman being supportive.

The conscious, open-eyed, deliberate kiss of a woman who had asked to be seen and was being seen. When she pulled back, her cheeks were wet. She wiped them with the back of her hand, annoyed at herself for crying, pleased with the result.

“Okay,” she said. “I’ll call them Monday.”

“Good.”

“But if you forget to call your mum again, I’m changing the locks.”

“Fair.”

I called Mum at nine. She answered on the first ring, she always did, because the phone was on the arm of her chair, and she was always waiting.

“Hi, Mum.”

“Hello, love. How was the match?”

“We beat City. Two-one.”

“I know. I watched. That Sakho he’s a big lad, isn’t he?”

“He is, Mum.”

“He reminds me of that doorman at the Arndale Centre. You remember the one? Built like a wardrobe. Always had a Twix in his pocket.”

I laughed. She had the ability to compress the entire world into the radius of her own experience, and somehow it always made more sense that way.

I asked about the doctor’s appointment. Wednesday, she said. Just a check-up. The chest had been better since the weather warmed which wasn’t true, because it was December and Manchester was freezing, but she said it with such conviction that I let her have it. I told her I’d come up after New Year. Properly. For a day. Not a flying visit between fixtures.

“You’ll come on a Sunday,” she said, the tone shifting from hopeful to organisational with the speed of a woman who had been running a household alone for twenty-five years. “I’ll make a roast. With Yorkshire puddings. And that gravy you like the one from the packet, not the fancy one.”

“I’ll eat three portions.”

“You’ll eat what I give you and be grateful.” A pause. Her voice softened. “I’m proud of you, Danny. You know that. I always was, even when you were stacking shelves. But I miss you. That’s all.”

“I miss you too, Mum. I’ll be better.”

“You’re already good enough, love. Just be here more.”

We talked for another twenty minutes. About the neighbours, Mrs. Okafor’s cat had got into the bins again. About the leaking tap she’d got Baz from the pub to fix it, “and he only charged me a tenner and a bacon sandwich, which is better than the plumber.”

About Frankie: “He came round on Thursday. Said he’d been to see you. Wouldn’t tell me what he said. Just sat in the kitchen and drank all my biscuits.”

When I hung up, I texted Frankie: “Spoke to Mum. She’s seeing the doctor Wednesday. I’m visiting after New Year. And I slept eight hours last night.”

His reply, twenty minutes later: “Good. Now do it again tomorrow. And the day after. Rome wasn’t built by a man who didn’t sleep.”

Classic Frankie. A history lesson disguised as affection.
