Chapter 39: Yuki’s skills are…
The Modern Era.
Ryu and Yuki walked down the empty street, the sound of a dog barking echoing through the neighborhood, shattering the evening’s tranquility as they made their way back to the old mansion, coffee cups cradled in their hands. The sun was slowly sinking below the horizon, painting the sky with a breathtaking gradient of fiery reds and soft pinks. Its last rays stretched across the city.
A cool, gentle breeze rustled the leaves, adding a refreshing crispness to the air as day transitioned into night slowly.
“It’s so tiring. If it weren’t for Gojin, I’d be at the café right now,” Yuki complained, exhaling dramatically as she took another sip of her coffee.
“We should consider the others, though. It’s exhausting, but we have to do it,” Ryu replied, trying to encourage both her and himself.
A phone call came in on Yuki’s phone. She pulled it out of her blue jeans pocket and answered.
A male voice came through the line. “Yuki – san, sorry to disturb you, but we need your help on a mission right now.”
“Okay, what are the details?” she replied as they continued walking. Ryu, meanwhile, was scrolling through his phone, searching for random things like the nearest playground for kids.
“A grade 3 radiant soul has been spotted near Namba Station in Osaka. It’s still active with a lot of people around, but we need you to get there before anything happens. I’ll send you the location, so be careful. Although we—”
She abruptly ended the call, cutting off the man mid-sentence. He was about to warn her that the mission might not be suitable for her current ranking, but she didn’t want to hear that.
Turning to Ryu, who was still engrossed in his phone, she said:
“I’ll be heading to Namba Station and should be back in about an hour. I’m also planning to take a short break.”
Ryu simply nodded, staring at his phone as he walked straight ahead. In an instant, Yuki vanished, reappearing on a distant building. From there, she continued to run, darting between structures at an unreadable speed. She considered this a faster way to travel, allowing her to spot the station from the heights of the top floors.
As she arrived at Namba Station, she descended into the underground. People rushed past her, each absorbed in their own world—some hurrying to catch trains, others chatting animatedly on their phones, and families walking through the crowd with children in tow. The sounds of announcements echoed overhead, blending with the thrum of footsteps and the distant rumble of trains.
Yuki moved calmly through the throng, her eyes fixed on her hands as memories flooded back. She recalled tossing her coffee cup away on the building, a small act that felt oddly significant in the moment.
As she navigated the station, she began to consider potential locations where the radiant soul might be hiding.
Could it be near the ticket areas, where the crowds gather? Or perhaps in a more quiet area?
She glanced toward a small café tucked into a corner.
No, too many people there. The storage area behind the shops would be the most potential areas, since it’s usually deserted.
Determined, she continued her search toward the storage area, scanning the environment for any signs of the soul’s presence, her instincts guided her toward the less-traveled paths of the station.
….
Now inside the storage area.
“Little soul, where are you? Mummy is here now.” She called in a lullaby-like voice, searching the storage area. The space was dim and cluttered, filled with old boxes and forgotten items, even a scary doll.
Well, the children deliberately abandoned those. No one wants to see Chucky in their rooms.
After several minutes of calling and singing, she sensed a presence. Suddenly, it appeared behind her, causing some windows to shatter with its arrival.
“Are your kind always shy? You sneak up behind so perfectly!” she exclaimed, still facing forward.
In a swift motion, she slashed at its leg and then its arm with a great sword called “Tsurugi”. It was rather summoned than carried around unlike other tools.
Blood erupted from the creature as its disfigured face showed shock. She spun around, playfully, watching it stagger back, its limbs quickly regenerating.
“I would have torn your head off, but I need to make an agreement first. I’ll call you a client,” she said, laughing lightly.
“Every entity has a weakness, and my main technique allows me to see them. And yours is speed – you lack speed. You’re not as fast as souls of your kind. So let’s make an agreement before your death.”
“Eyyyy,” it managed to say, confused.
“Details: I might not have a healing nor a reverse technique, but you won’t land a hit, so I won’t need one so can I slice you into tiny pieces faster than you can regenerate? I need to practice for my steak date next week.”
“Eyyy,” it responded again.
“Then I’ll take that as a yes. Congratulations on signing an agreement with me, my beloved client. I won’t let you down.” Yuki bowed slightly, a psychopathic smile on her face. Then, she dashed forward with incredible speed, ready to fulfill her promise.
She began tearing the body apart, starting with the hands and then cutting into the torso from different angles, blood pouring out. Leaping into the air, she raised her weapon high and performed a downward slash, a wicked smile on her face. She split the body in two like a sliced potato, but that wasn’t the end; the head came off as well, yet she continued to pull the pieces apart with her strong hands brutally, red blood pooling quickly on the ground.
She managed to keep the blood from staining her neat clothe – a white top with a teddy on it and a blue jeans with white sneakers.
“Heeeee— that’s what you kept saying. At least appreciate my agreement, and maybe you would have died less brutally, you annoying client. However, I’ve fulfilled my part of the deal, and so have you by being my test subject. Good day… wherever you’re heading,” she said.
She felt annoyed about not having enough fun during the fight; her psychopathic tendencies craved more chaos. Some exorcists even feared her, worried she might tear them into piles of flesh one day – a significant trauma she had instilled in them.
Walking out of the storage area and dismissing her weapon. The soul’s body began disintegrating into ashes.
“I thought this radiant soul would be more powerful. This is my second one, though the first was quite a challenge, leaving me with a heap of injuries,” she mused, climbing the stairs to the outside city. She decided to head to a restaurant before meeting Ryu.
“I suppose this one didn’t possess any of Kurozai’s fragments; the aura wasn’t strong, making it easier this time, thanks to my technique.”
