After confirming that each of Jacob’s Dragon-type Pokémon had an A-grade Dragon Scale, Nina agreed to accept the one offered to her. As a Dragon-type Pokémon Master, the importance of an A-grade Dragon Scale was self-evident, and she was quite pleased with the gift.
Then she shifted her gaze to the large gift box and opened it.
“Isn’t this the Cottonee Egg that you chose? Why are you giving it to me?” Nina asked.
“I’m giving it to you, just accept it. This Cottonee has very good qualifications. I notice there’s no support Pokémon in your team, so it’s actually quite suitable for you,” Jacob said with a smile, though his heart was bleeding.
Did she know how powerful this Pokémon could become?
“Don’t you know that I’m a Dragon-type trainer? Why would you give me a Fairy-type Cottonee?” Nina said to Jacob.
“A Dragon-type trainer only needs three Dragon-type Pokémon, and there are no requirements for the remaining three,” Jacob replied. “This is a Pokémon Egg I carefully selected, please take it.”
“Okay.” Nina didn’t have high expectations for this Pokémon Egg. After all, Jacob had only purchased it from the underground black market for tens of thousands of Pokédollars, but Fairy Pokémon were also very cute. She actually wanted to try raising a Fairy Pokémon as a pet.
“Let’s eat,” Jacob said when he saw Nina accept the gift.
…
A month later.
Time passed quickly, and in the blink of an eye, a month had gone by. After intensive training, four of Jacob’s five Pokémon had reached the Elite level, with only Axew remaining at the Rare level since he was just one month old. Their progress had been rapid. After reaching the Elite level, however, their growth rate slowed down significantly. For example, Grovyle was still stuck at the Elite level.
Noibat had learned three new moves: Heat Wave, Bite, and Air Slash, and had also learned Protect and Taunt through TMs.
Grovyle learned Giga Drain and also learned Sunny Day through a TM.
Charmeleon had learned Slash and Dragon Rage.
Dreepy did not learn any new moves.
Axew had learned five moves: Bite, Endure, Pursuit, Taunt, and Dragon Tail.

…
After reaching the Elite level, the growth rate of a Pokémon’s strength begins to slow down. To continue improving his strength, Jacob decided that in addition to daytime training, he would use his connection with the Long family to serve as an Elite defending trainer at the Drakehold Dragon Gym every weekend starting this week.
The position of Elite defending trainer meant responding to challenges from external Elite trainers who came to the gym requesting battle training. This role provided opportunities to face various trainers and was ideal for actual combat experience, but it required extremely high skill and a good winning rate.
Jacob and Nina arrived at the Dragon Gym together. The owner of the Dragon Gym in Drakehold was a man in his thirties named Kindler. He was tall and strong, slightly shorter than Jacob but more muscular.
“Nina, you’re here!” Kindler was four years older than Nina. The two had known each other since childhood. When Maximus was the master of the Dragon Gym, Kindler was an apprentice and also one of Maximus’s disciples.
“Junior brother!”
Kindler greeted them with a smile, but his eyes were constantly drawn to Nina.
Nina’s outfit today was particularly beautiful. As November arrived, the weather in Drakehold was getting colder. She wore a knitted wool sweater that accentuated her figure, paired with black stockings and high-top boots. Already tall, her height now nearly matched Jacob’s, almost reaching his eyebrows. She was holding a cute Cottonee in her arms, which was looking around curiously.
This Cottonee was the one Jacob had given her. As a Dragon-type trainer, Nina originally disliked Fairy-type Pokémon. But looking at the fluffy and extremely cute Cottonee, she suddenly felt that Fairy-type Pokémon were actually quite charming.
Nina never imagined that this Cottonee had King-level qualifications, and she was raising it merely as a pet. If Jacob hadn’t told her to train and cultivate the Cottonee properly, Nina probably wouldn’t have allowed it to undergo any training.
It’s a waste of resources, Jacob thought. I must find a chance to talk to Teacher Nina about it. The Cottonee has just hatched, so there’s no need to rush.
“Senior Brother,” Nina greeted Kindler.
“Senior Brother,” Jacob said.
“Junior brother Jacob, you’re the genius trainer I’ve heard so much about,” Kindler said to Jacob with a smile.
“Senior Brother Kindler.”
After they greeted each other, Kindler focused his attention on Nina and asked about her well-being. “Junior sister, that’s a Fairy-type Pokémon, Cottonee. When did you capture a Fairy-type? That’s quite rebellious for a Dragon trainer.”
“I’ve grown quite fond of it. Fairy types can be very cute,” Nina smiled and replied. “Let’s get Jacob registered first.”
“Alright,” Kindler responded. “But I have to make it clear that our defending trainers must maintain at least a 60% win rate.”
“If he can’t achieve a 60% win rate, he doesn’t need to stay here,” Nina glanced at Jacob. “Right, Jacob?”
“Yeah,” Jacob responded calmly.
Provoking him didn’t work; only strategic patience would work with Jacob.
…
After registering, Jacob changed into the Dragon Gym uniform and proceeded to Arena Number 3, quietly waiting for his first challenger. Nina and Kindler found seats in the front row, acting as spectators.
“Junior sister, Master hasn’t accepted any disciples for a long time. Why did he suddenly take this one?” As soon as they sat down, Kindler kept talking to Nina.
“I don’t know either. I suppose because he’s very talented,” Nina responded, her mind clearly elsewhere as she continued teasing the Cottonee with her hands, taking out a Poké Puff and feeding it to the little Pokémon.
“Then I’ll have to watch our junior brother’s match carefully,” Kindler said with a smile. “Junior sister, are you free for dinner tonight? I’ll be the host and welcome both you and our junior brother.”
“We’ll see.”
…
Jacob, standing in the arena, attracted the attention of many female spectators. Already handsome, with his height of 6’3″, his well-proportioned figure immediately made him the focus of attention.
Soon Jacob met his first challenger, an 18-year-old student preparing for the College Cup.
“Battle field number three, Elite Trainer Hudson versus Elite Defending Trainer Jacob. The rules of the match are chosen by Hudson.”
This type of battle could be 1v1 Singles, 2v2 Singles, or 3v3 Singles, chosen at the challenger’s discretion.
“1v1 Singles,” Hudson chose the simplest format.
“The match rules are 1v1 Singles. The battle will begin shortly. 3, 2, 1, begin!”
As the referee’s countdown ended, Jacob and Hudson released their Pokémon simultaneously!
“Grovyle, I’m counting on you!”
“Go, Frosmoth!”
Faced with an unknown opponent in a 1v1 match, Jacob naturally chose his strongest Pokémon, his Grovyle.
Opponent Hudson sent out Frosmoth, an uncommon Pokémon rarely seen in competitive battles.
Frosmoth, an Ice/Bug-type Pokémon evolved from Snom. Its combat power was at the Elite level, and its ability was Tinted Lens.
The Tinted Lens ability was extremely powerful. Its effect was that when a Pokémon with this ability used a move that would normally be “not very effective,” the damage was doubled, essentially negating the resistance.
For example, when a Fire-type move hit a Water-type Pokémon, it would normally cause only half damage, but with Tinted Lens, the damage would be doubled back to normal effectiveness.
This ability was perfect for offensive Pokémon. Jacob recalled that in Pokémon Scarlet, there was a Pokémon called Volcarona. With Tinted Lens plus a Choice Specs held item, combined with its Bug/Fire typing, the power of its Bug Buzz attack was devastating.
The base power of Bug Buzz is 90, and with Choice Specs, the attack is increased by 50%. The STAB bonus from being a Bug-type adds another 50%. In total, the effective power becomes 90 × 1.5 × 1.5, which equals 202.5.
What made this even more significant was that with Tinted Lens, this 202.5 power would be effective against most Pokémon. Except for those with a 4× resistance to Bug, which would still take 101.25 damage, even Pokémon with 2× resistance would take the full 202.5 damage, ignoring their resistance.
Few defensive Pokémon could withstand such an attack, and virtually no offensive Pokémon could survive it.
Therefore, Tinted Lens could be considered an extremely top-tier ability!
Looking at the Frosmoth before him, Jacob remained calm but cautious. With its Ice/Bug typing, Frosmoth had a 4× resistance to Grass-type moves, giving it a complete type advantage over Grovyle. Jacob had encountered a formidable opponent in his very first battle.
“Frosmoth, Bug Buzz!” Hudson naturally chose a Bug-type move, which was super effective against Grovyle while also benefiting from STAB.
“Grovyle, Dragon Pulse!”
Jacob chose Dragon Pulse. Facing Frosmoth, he obviously couldn’t let Grovyle use Grass-type moves, so the Dragon-type Dragon Pulse became the best choice in this situation!
