Upon hearing Jacob’s words, Davis’s expression darkened considerably, though he dared not openly display his anger. He looked at Jacob’s deceptively pleasant smile and nodded stiffly in confirmation. “That’s correct.”

“I’m not killing you because there’s a specific task I want you to accomplish.” Jacob’s mention of Davis’s sister and mother served as both a subtle warning and a test of the man’s emotional vulnerabilities.

Davis naturally understood the implicit meaning behind Jacob’s carefully chosen words. If he cooperated fully, his family would indeed be well-protected and cared for. If he chose not to cooperate, the consequences for his loved ones would be severe and obvious.

Faced with Jacob’s thinly veiled threat, Davis found himself with absolutely no viable alternatives. He could only accept the terms being offered.

“Alright, I agree to your proposal,” Davis responded, his voice heavy with reluctant acceptance.

“Understood,” Caleb replied with a firm nod.

“Starting immediately, you two will establish secure communication methods and contact each other at predetermined intervals to exchange valuable information. Caleb, if any critically important intelligence emerges, remember to notify me immediately.”

After finishing his instructions, Jacob turned his attention back to Davis. “When you return to your organization, you’ll need to devise your own explanation for what happened here. Handle the disposal of the bodies and eliminate any traces of our encounter. We’ll be taking the captured Pokemon and other spoils from this operation—otherwise, it would be impossible for you to explain their absence when you report back.”

After observing Davis complete the grim task of body disposal, Jacob collected the captured Pokemon and departed the scene with his two companions, leaving only Davis behind to contemplate his situation.

“Caleb,” Jacob’s voice finally broke the prolonged silence as he rode atop his Charizard. “Aren’t you curious about why I chose to spare Davis’s life?”

“I am curious.”

“Then why haven’t you asked me about it?”

“Why did you decide to let Davis live?”
