Chapter 43: Chapter 39 – The Day the Forest Remembered
The forest didn’t calm down after the battle.
It lingered in a strange, uneasy stillness—like the moment after thunder, when the sky hasn’t decided whether it’s finished raging or just pausing. Smoke drifted lazily between shattered trunks, curling upward from scorched earth and half-melted stone. The smell of burned wood, blood, and ozone hung thick in the air.
John hovered above it all, wings beating in slow, measured strokes.
Every flap sent a dull ache through his shoulders. His muscles screamed for rest, but he didn’t dare land just yet. Not here. Not when the air itself still felt tense, like something was watching and waiting.
Below him lay devastation.
Trees flattened in wide arcs, snapped like twigs by massive bodies slamming into them. Long trenches carved into the ground where breath attacks had torn through the forest in straight, merciless lines. Craters—some still faintly glowing with residual mana—marked where monsters had collided or fallen from the sky.
And at the center of it all—
The level 10 monster.
Its corpse was enormous, even in death. A massive shape of cracked scales and broken horns, slumped against a shattered ridgeline as if the earth itself had tried—and failed—to hold it upright. Its chest no longer moved. The terrifying pressure it once radiated had vanished completely, leaving behind an emptiness that felt almost unreal.
John stared at it.
For several long seconds, he didn’t move.
“…I’m alive,” he said quietly.
The words sounded strange coming out of his mouth, like he was testing whether they were true.
He descended slowly, wings angling downward as he landed on a fractured stone slab not far from the corpse. The moment his claws touched the ground, the strength left his legs.
His knees buckled.
John caught himself at the last second, one claw digging into the stone with a harsh scrape. His breathing turned ragged, chest rising and falling too fast, too shallow.
“Get it together,” he muttered through clenched teeth.
He forced himself upright, even as his body protested. Every muscle felt heavy, like it had been filled with molten lead. His mana circulation was unstable—still surging, still refusing to settle after the prolonged fight.
That was dangerous.
John knew it.
But exhaustion wasn’t the worst part.
The worst part was the silence.
The hot zone was never quiet. Even after fights, there was always something—distant roars, territorial calls, the movement of predators circling to see if they could steal a kill.
Now?
Nothing.
No birds. No insects. No distant howls.
Just him.
And the bodies.
John slowly turned his head, scanning the ruined clearing. That’s when he felt it—a presence, weak but undeniable, stirring at the edge of his senses.
Movement.
“…Of course,” he said under his breath.
A massive shape dragged itself into view from behind a collapsed tree.
It was a level 9 monster.
Bear-like in form, but far larger than any normal beast, its body was covered in jagged crystal growths that looked like armor forged by the earth itself. Several of those crystals were shattered now. Blood—dark and viscous—oozed from deep cracks along its torso.
One of its eyes was gone.
The other locked onto John the instant it saw him.
Not with rage.
With fear.
John felt something shift in his chest.
*It knows,* he realized.
The monster knew it was finished. It could sense the change in the area, the absence of the level 10’s pressure, the lingering dominance that now—uncomfortably—belonged to John.
Still, it moved forward.
Slow. Uneven. Each step left a smear of blood behind it.
John didn’t rush.
He stood there and watched it approach, wings half-open, claws relaxed at his sides.
“I didn’t want this to be easy,” he said quietly. “But I won’t pretend I didn’t plan it.”
The monster let out a hoarse roar and forced its mana outward in one last attempt to intimidate him.
The pressure slammed into John like a physical weight, heavy and crushing—enough to freeze weaker creatures in place.
John staggered half a step.
Then straightened.
And pushed back.
His aura surged outward, not explosive, not wild—*dense*. Controlled. The pressure rolled through the clearing like a deep tide, pressing down hard.
The monster froze.
Its roar died in its throat.
“…Yeah,” John murmured. “That’s what I thought.”
He moved.
No wasted motion. No hesitation.
John crossed the distance in a blur, claws coated in compressed mana that vibrated with lethal precision. The monster swung a massive paw toward him, but it was slow—too slow.
John slipped under it and drove his claws straight into the exposed joint beneath its chest armor.
There was a wet, final sound.
The monster collapsed, its massive body hitting the ground with a dull, hollow thud.
Silence followed.
John stepped back, chest heaving.
Almost immediately, the system’s presence pressed in.
**[Target defeated.]**
**[High-grade experience acquired.]**
John barely had time to register it before something *inside him* shifted.
It wasn’t sudden.
It was heavy.
Like a door he’d been leaning against for days finally gave way.
His heart slammed once—twice—and mana surged violently through his body, flooding every limb, every scale, every nerve. Pain flared, sharp and overwhelming, forcing a roar out of his throat before he could stop it.
“GRAAAAH—!”
John dropped to one knee, claws tearing into the stone beneath him as his body *changed*.
His scales thickened, darkening slightly at the edges. His wings stretched wider, the membrane tightening, strengthening. His bones creaked as his frame grew denser—not larger, but heavier, more solid.
Power settled into him like a crown being placed on his head.
**[Level Up.]**
**[Dragon Tier increased.]**
**[Current Tier: 7 Dragon.]**
John gasped, sucking in air like he’d been drowning.
“…Tier 7,” he whispered.
A short, breathless laugh escaped him—half disbelief, half relief.
“I actually… did it.”
But the forest wasn’t finished with him.
A guttural snarl echoed from the far side of the clearing.
Then another.
John’s head snapped up.
Two more presences emerged—both level 9 monsters, both badly injured from their earlier clash with the level 10.
One was serpent-like, its massive body dragging through debris, scales cracked and bleeding. The other was an insectoid monstrosity with shattered wings and a missing limb, ichor dripping steadily onto the ground.
They looked at John.
Then at the corpse behind him.
And made the same decision.
Kill him—or die anyway.
John slowly rose to his feet.
His body still hummed with the aftershock of the level-up, mana flowing smoother now, denser, more obedient. The exhaustion hadn’t vanished—but it was being drowned out by something else.
Confidence.
Not arrogance.
Certainty.
“…Come on,” he said quietly. “Let’s finish this.”
The serpent struck first, launching itself forward with terrifying speed despite its injuries. Its jaws opened wide, venom dripping from broken fangs.
John waited.
Counted.
One.
Two.
Three—
He moved on four.
John shot upward, wings snapping open as the serpent crashed into the ground where he’d been standing a moment earlier. Before it could recover, John twisted midair and unleashed a compressed mana blast straight down its spine.
The explosion shattered the ground beneath it.
The serpent convulsed once.
Then went still.
**[Target defeated.]**
The insectoid monster screamed and charged, scythe-like limbs swinging wildly.
John met it head-on.
Claws clashed against hardened chitin, sparks of mana flaring with every impact. The creature tried to overpower him, but this time—
John didn’t budge.
He grabbed one of its limbs, twisted, and tore it free with a brutal jerk. The monster shrieked, stumbling backward.
John didn’t hesitate.
He drove a mana-coated claw straight through its core.
Silence.
**[Target defeated.]**
The system didn’t pause.
Didn’t space it out.
It flooded him.
**[Multiple high-level targets defeated.]**
**[Experience accumulation exceeds threshold.]**
John froze.
The pressure returned—stronger than before.
His vision blurred.
“…No way,” he breathed.
Mana surged violently again, fiercer this time. His muscles tightened painfully, scales reinforcing, aura expanding outward in a visible distortion.
The forest groaned.
Trees bent.
Stone cracked.
John roared, the sound deeper now, heavier—filled with raw authority.
**[Level Up.]**
**[Dragon Tier increased.]**
**[Current Tier: 8 Dragon.]**
The roar faded.
The pressure receded.
And the forest finally went quiet.
John stood alone amid the devastation, chest heaving, wings slowly folding against his back.
His body felt different.
Not just stronger.
Sharper.
More aware.
He could feel the forest now—not just as terrain, but as something reacting to him. Animals miles away were fleeing. Weaker monsters were retreating instinctively.
“…Tier 8,” he said softly.
He looked at his claws and flexed them.
“All of this,” he murmured. “In one day.”
His gaze drifted across the ruined clearing—the corpses, the scars, the price of power.
John didn’t smile.
He nodded once.
“This is what it takes,” he said quietly. “And it’s only going to get worse.”
He lifted his head, eyes narrowing toward the deeper parts of the forest—the places even these monsters feared.
“I’m ready.”
And for the first time since entering the hot zone—
The forest agreed.
