His gaze drifted briefly toward the door the women had exited through.

Duke shrugged. “You didn’t need to know.”

His eyes sharpened again.

“And if you had known, you might have hesitated.”

The accusation was soft.

But deliberate.

“You would have considered whether my investment was worth preserving. Whether my network should remain intact. Whether removing the invaders too quickly would compromise intelligence.”

Bruce did not answer.

Duke smiled faintly.

“I removed myself so you would not.”

Silence stretched between them, heavy and thoughtful.

Below, laughter echoed again from the street. A carriage rolled past. Life continued, blissfully unaware of how close it had come to quiet annihilation.

“You are decisive,” Duke continued softly. “Brutally so. And Eiskar needed brutality.”

His gaze drifted outward again, toward the horizon beyond the city.

“But this was only a surface infestation.”

The humor in his voice faded almost imperceptibly.

“There are deeper roots.”

Bruce’s eyes narrowed.

Duke’s smile returned, crooked, irreverent, infuriatingly calm.

“And that,” he said lightly, lifting his teacup once more, “is where life becomes interesting.”

“With careful investment and strategic ’guidance,’ this brothel outcompeted the others. Better management. Better protection. Better information flow.”

Duke’s chuckle was soft, almost affectionate, as though he were reminiscing about a beloved hobby rather than a carefully constructed intelligence network. “Through the information I learned here, I learned a great many things…”

Bruce watched him in silence.

“You suspected Isolde was possessed.”

“No,” Duke replied lightly. “Not exactly that.”

The shift in his tone was subtle, but real.

“I suspected she was not entirely herself.”

He leaned both elbows against the balcony railing, the lantern light below casting slow moving shadows up the stone walls. The city of Eiskar stretched outward beneath them, lanterns swaying, distant laughter floating up from the streets, unaware of how close the kingdom had come to silent collapse.

“The invader was cautious. Very cautious,” Duke continued. “Information bottlenecked at the highest level. Orders filtered. Advisors replaced quietly. Records altered in small, forgettable ways. Even with this establishment’s influence, I could not access what I needed.”

His eyes narrowed faintly, the humor thinning.

“The one inside her held everything tight.”

Bruce’s gaze sharpened. “You didn’t tell me.”

Duke shrugged without turning. “You would have confronted her directly.”

“Which would have solved it sooner.”

“Or triggered panic,” Duke countered calmly. “Or forced the parasite to flee prematurely. Or worse, retreat deeper and fortify. Desperate enemies do unpredictable things, Bruce. And unpredictability in a capital city is… expensive.”

The wind shifted, tugging lightly at his robes.

“You move like a blade,” Duke said after a moment. “Clean. Decisive. Final.”

He glanced over his shoulder, eyes glinting faintly.

“I move like a net.”

Bruce did not respond immediately.

The difference between them hung unspoken in the air.

Duke’s smile returned, faint but knowing. “But once you arrived… I adjusted.”

He turned fully now, studying Bruce with an intensity that did not match his relaxed posture.

“You were more precise than I anticipated.”

Bruce’s expression did not change. “You trusted me.”

Duke laughed, soft and genuine. “No.”

He lifted a finger and pointed it lazily at Bruce’s chest.

“I calculated you.”

A pause.

Then, quieter,

“And I was correct.”

The wind drifted through the open balcony, stirring Duke’s robes and the hem of Bruce’s coat. Below, a carriage rolled past. Somewhere, a tavern door slammed. Life continued in blissful ignorance.

“You purged them without war,” Duke said. “Without unrest. Without exposing the kingdom to instability. No riots. No power vacuum. No opportunistic nobles attempting to seize leverage.”

He took a slow breath.

“You are dangerous, Bruce.”

There was no fear in his voice.

Only acknowledgment.

Bruce met his gaze evenly. “You used the brothel to gather information. But you still didn’t get your hands on what you needed.”

Duke nodded once. “Yes.”

His voice grew thoughtful, quieter.

“Because the true rot was centralized.”

He turned back to the city.

“Power consolidates secrets. And when power is infiltrated, those secrets harden. They compress. They move upward.”

A faint smile curved his lips again.

“And secrets require unusual places to surface.”

Bruce folded his arms. “So you sit here.”

Duke’s grin widened. “Oh, I do more than sit.”

He tapped the porcelain rim of his teacup.

“I listen. I invest. I nudge. I redirect. I make certain men compete with each other in ways that reveal what they are trying to hide.”

He glanced back at Bruce.

“Information is the true currency of kingdoms. Gold merely facilitates it.”

Bruce’s gaze hardened slightly. “And what are you gathering now?”

Duke’s eyes gleamed faintly in the lantern glow.

“The aftershocks.”
