Chapter 620: Chapter 620: Cycle’s End
The darkness held. “Eclipse Sun” remained above them like a black law nailed into the false sky, and beneath it Roberto’s dimension had been reduced to flashes, pale fragments of ground swallowed by shadow and returned only when light tore through them. Roberto stood a few steps away, clearly wounded now. Blood kept running from the deep line across his torso and down one leg, one arm lower than the other, his breathing heavier than before. The damage was real. So was the danger.
Noel did not relax. Someone like Roberto did not become harmless just because he was bleeding. Not after all the cycles he had endured. Not after surviving that long by refusing to die when the world had already decided he should. Noel kept Revenant Fang raised and his weight balanced, eyes fixed on even the smallest changes in Roberto’s posture.
Roberto noticed. “You’re still cautious.” His voice was tired, but the edge in it remained. A faint, humorless curve touched his mouth. “Good.”
Noel gave him nothing back. He stepped first. “Shadow Step.” The darkness swallowed him and returned him from Roberto’s damaged side, blade already cutting for the ribs. Roberto turned with a flash of light fast enough to split the black for an instant. “Radiant Slash.” Steel and light met with a crack sharp enough to shake the dim floor beneath them. Noel forced through the line anyway, using his shoulder to keep the distance ugly, then opened a “Shadow Rift” at Roberto’s blind side and came out of it with a second strike already falling. Roberto caught the blade with less smoothness than before, but he still caught it. Their swords ground together, forearms locking, weight shifting through the bind.
Then light burst between them. “Flashbind.” Noel’s vision flared white for a fraction of a second. That was all Roberto needed. He twisted free and stepped in with “Sanctified Step,” arriving closer than the eye wanted to accept, and drove the guard of his sword hard into Noel’s wounded side before following with a short slash backed by light. Noel turned late and the cut still bit across his shoulder and upper chest, clean enough to send heat through the whole side of his body at once.
He gave ground for the first time in several breaths.
Roberto did not chase wildly. That was what made it worse. Even hurt, even slowed, he was still choosing his moments.
Blood ran warm under Noel’s clothes. He felt it, accepted it, and tightened his grip on Revenant Fang instead of looking down.
This still had to be finished properly.
Roberto took the next step with decision instead of patience. The hesitation from before was gone. Not because the wounds no longer mattered, but because he had reached the point where caution had lost value. Light gathered around him more densely than before, not broad and measured as it had been earlier, but sharpened, compressed, forced inward until even the dark around his body seemed to recoil from it.
“Flashbind.” The burst hit harder this time. The darkness tore open in a violent white flare, and within that flash the whole duel existed in fragments. Roberto’s face, pale and set. Noel’s blade already moving. Blood on Roberto’s side. The broken white ground beneath them. Then motion again before the black returned.
“Radiant Slash.” One line. Then another. Noel slipped through the first with “Shadow Step,” opened a “Shadow Rift” through the second, and came out from a lower angle with Revenant Fang cutting upward. Roberto met him with sword and shoulder together, taking the strike badly on his wounded side but keeping the center long enough to release “Sanctum Pulse.” Light exploded from him in a brutal ring, and this time Noel could not fully evade it. The force caught him across the chest and arm, throwing him back through the dark hard enough that his boots tore across the dim floor before he recovered balance.
Noel’s breathing had changed now. Slower. Heavier. His wounded side burned. His shoulder throbbed. Every movement still came fast, but the cost of each one had begun to settle into his body.
Roberto saw it and pressed. “Judgment Line.” The black dimension split apart under that silent attack, and Noel felt the cut pass close enough to take a strip of darkness and floor with it. He vanished with “Shadow Step” an instant before it erased him cleanly, reappeared from another angle, and answered with “Voltage Needle.” The thin line of lightning punched toward Roberto’s throat. Roberto turned late and took it across the upper chest instead, his whole body jolting from the impact.
Noel did not let the opening breathe. “Glacialis.” Ice struck the same line of pressure, and then Revenant Fang followed through it with “Eclipse Rend” already gathering along the blade, dense and threatening, forcing Roberto to defend instead of retaliate. Their swords crashed together again in another burst of white, and this time the light showed more blood than before.
Roberto’s wound had worsened. One side of his body lagged just a fraction, his breathing catching before the next burst of speed.
But Noel was not untouched either. His arm felt heavier. His side ached with every twist. The duel had gone beyond the clean violence of earlier exchanges. Now it felt like both of them were burning themselves down to reach the final blow first.
Then it happened. Roberto raised his sword again, light gathering for the next answer, and for the first time since the fight began, the power in it thinned by a fraction he could not fully hide.
Roberto chose the next exchange himself. The darkness split wide under “Flashbind,” not as a probing flare this time, but as a brutal opening meant to decide everything in one sequence. For a blink the dimension existed again in white fragments. Roberto’s body. The blood running down his side. The line of his sword already cutting through the air.
“Judgment Line.” The silent stroke tore across the black world with the weight of a sentence already passed. Noel had read that rhythm by then. He did not try to outrun it cleanly. “Shadow Step.” The dark swallowed him a fraction before the cut erased the space where he had stood, and in the same movement he cast “Cooling Veil.” A thin wave of frost spread low through the blackened dimension, turning the air sharper, dulling the clean certainty of Roberto’s light for just long enough to make the next instant imperfect.
That imperfection was all Noel needed. “Ice Spike.” Jagged ice burst upward under Roberto’s wounded side.
Not enough to skewer him cleanly.
Enough to break his footing at the exact wrong moment. Roberto answered fast with “Sanctum Pulse,” light exploding outward and shattering the ice into white debris, but the pulse came half a beat later than it should have.
Noel was already moving. A slit of shadow opened above and behind Roberto. “Shadow Rift.” Noel came through it in silence, Revenant Fang driving down with pure physical force first, sword against sword, shoulder against shoulder, weight crashing into weight.
Roberto held the clash for a breath and tried to recover the line with “Radiant Slash,” but Noel had layered the real attack beneath the bind.
“Gravity Collapse.” The air distorted violently around Roberto and slammed downward. His body dropped under the invisible pressure, one knee nearly touching the pale ground beneath the dark. That was the opening Noel had been building toward from the start.
“Stormpiercer.” Lightning cracked through the dimension like a nerve being torn open. Noel turned into a streak of white-blue force and drove straight through the gap in Roberto’s defense before “Lumina Veil” could fully thicken over it. The impact punched through his upper torso and sent him reeling backward, the shock tearing breath, blood, and balance from him all at once. He stayed upright by force alone, but the wound was no longer one that could be hidden behind posture.
Noel did not lower Revenant Fang either. He stayed ready while Roberto staggered back through the dark, blood falling more heavily now, one arm weaker, one leg slower. Both of them understood the same thing without saying it.
The violence thinned out of the space between them almost by itself. Not because either of them had chosen peace, but because the fight had already said what mattered.
Roberto remained standing, though “standing” was generous now. Blood ran steadily from the wound Noel had opened, darker and heavier than before, falling over the dim floor beneath the eclipse in a slow rhythm that matched the weakening drag of his breath. One hand still held the sword, but the grip had changed. Less control. Less intention. The body understood before pride did when the end had arrived.
Noel did not move in carelessly. He stayed where he was, Revenant Fang still raised, chest rising and falling hard, eyes fixed on Roberto in case one last desperate strike still came.
A man like Roberto had earned that caution. Someone who had survived that many cycles did not stop being dangerous just because death was finally in front of him.
Then Roberto let out a quiet breath that almost became a laugh. “So this really was the one.” His voice had lost the edge from before. What remained was thinner, worn down, but clearer somehow. He lowered his sword by a fraction and looked up into the darkness above them, where “Eclipse Sun” still ruled over the broken remains of his dimension. “This cycle… really was different.”
Noel said nothing for a moment. The weight of the duel, the pain in his side, the blood running down his shoulder, all of it was still there, but it no longer pressed in the same way. When he finally answered, his voice came out lower than before. “Yeah.”
Roberto smiled faintly at that, the expression small but real. No mockery left in it now. No argument either. He seemed past all of that. Past the need to prove anything. Past the version of himself that had kept walking through hell because he believed there was nothing else left for him.
“I think,” Roberto said slowly, “I knew it for a while.” His gaze returned to Noel. “I just didn’t want to admit it.”
Noel lowered Revenant Fang a little then, not fully, but enough to show the shift. The duel was no longer hanging on the next exchange. It had already ended. They were only catching up to that truth now.
Roberto took one unsteady step forward. Pain crossed his face for a second, but he kept moving anyway. “Come here, Noel.” He said it quietly, almost like a request he was not used to making. And for the first time since the duel began, there was nothing sharp left in him when he asked.
For a second Noel only looked at him, measuring what remained, out of habit, out of caution, out of everything the fight had pressed into his body until it felt like bone.
Then he stepped forward.
Roberto met him halfway.
The embrace was not strong. It could not have been. There was too much blood leaving him for that, too much weight slipping out with every breath. But it was real. One arm came around Noel’s back, unsteady and slow, and for a moment the whole ruined darkness around them seemed to pull back behind the simple fact of it.
Noel stood still and let him.
Roberto’s voice came low against his shoulder. “I’m glad I met you.”
The words landed softly. They carried more weight than any blow they had exchanged.
“I had good moments,” Roberto continued, after a short breath. “More than I expected.” A faint, exhausted warmth touched his voice, something that might once have been a smile, worn down to its last shape. “With you. With the others too. The academy. Class S. Even the stupid little things.”
His grip weakened, though he did not pull away yet.
“I could say I’m sorry for what I did. But it wouldn’t be sincere, so I won’t. I did what I had to do.” A pause. “I don’t regret it.”
Noel’s hand tightened slightly at his side.
He said nothing.
Roberto let out a breath, a small, worn, a thing that had once known how to become a laugh. “So I’ll ask you one last thing instead.” His voice had grown thinner, but it stayed clear. “Live a different life, Noel. You actually have the chance to do it.”
Another breath. Slower.
“Don’t hesitate.” A beat. “You earned it.”
The arm around Noel slipped lower.
Roberto pulled back just enough for Noel to see his face. There was no anger left in it. No mask either. Only exhaustion, and pain, and something quieter underneath — a peace that had arrived too late and stayed anyway.
Then his body gave out.
Noel caught him before he hit the ground, lowering him slowly, with more care than anything the fight had allowed either of them. Roberto’s eyes stayed open a moment longer, fixed on something past Noel’s shoulder, somewhere farther than the dark around them.
Then they went still. Quietly. Without struggle.
Noel did not move.
He stayed low to the ground, one hand still braced against Roberto’s back, the other pressed flat against the cold earth beside him. The silence of the fight filled everything in. No voices. No movement. Just the weight of a body growing heavier in his arms the way all things do when they stop resisting gravity.
He stayed there.
He did not know for how long.
Above them, “Eclipse Sun” trembled.
The darkness shifted first. Then the pale remnants of Roberto’s dimension answered. Cracks of white light spread through the black like fractures inside glass, slow at first, then reaching the edges of everything. Chunks of brightness broke from the horizon and dissolved into drifting shards, soundless and patient, as if the world itself were being gentle about it.
Roberto was gone.
And Noel remained, one hand still on his back, while the dimension came apart around them both, without ceremony, the way something dies when there is no one left to hold it together.
Noel stayed there until the unraveling reached him.
It did not explode. That would have been wrong for what this was. Instead the world came apart the way thin crystal does when a hidden fault finally reaches the edge, not with violence but with inevitability.
The darkness loosened first. Then the pale architecture of Roberto’s dimension began to fracture beneath it, white lines running through the black in long silent arcs before whole pieces of the horizon broke free and dissolved into nothing.
They did not fall. They simply ceased, as if the place had lost the right to remain whole now that the man who had held it was gone.
Only then did Noel move.
He laid Roberto’s body down and leaned back on failing arms before the last of his strength abandoned him. His body met the ground a moment later, flat and loose, spread into something resembling a figure thrown from a great height. He lay still and stared upward while the ruined sky dissolved above him, black and white breaking apart in turn. His chest heaved. Every part of him ached. His eyes were wet, though he could not have said when that had begun.
For a long moment he only breathed.
Then the words left him in a whisper, thin and more truthful than anything louder could have been.
“I did it.”
The dimension kept coming undone around him. Somewhere in the silence, a window opened before his eyes.
[You have slain Roberto, the First Pillar. Congratulations!! You did it!!]
A second followed almost at once.
[You have managed to kill all six Pillars, the Circle has ended. Elarin cannot manifest in this Dimension.]
Then a third.
[Unique Quest: Save The World has been completed, the cycle has ended, congratulations Noel. You can rest.]
And finally:
[Reward available, do you want to claim it?]
Noel read them without moving. His breathing steadied by degrees, though the exhaustion remained lodged in his bones like something permanent. Around him the world continued to die, each fracture widening, each breach swallowing another piece of the sky.
He could rest later.
Not here.
Noel closed his eyes for one breath, opened them again, and spoke the last words into the dark.
“Spatial Shift.”
