Chapter 37: Luna Heart
It was a girl.
She appeared close to his age .. perhaps slightly younger.
What distinguished her most was the iconic symbol of witches:
A pointed hat.
It cast a shadow over her face.
Ethan realized he had just bumped into her hard enough to knock her to the ground.
He extended his hand immediately.
“I’m sorry… I was distracted for a moment and didn’t see you—”
He stopped mid-sentence.
He had noticed something else.
The girl lifted her face and stared at him.
Crimson eyes.
The same distinctive eyes of the Heart bloodline.
But unlike the eyes…
She lacked the other trait.
“Black hair…” Ethan murmured unconsciously.
That was a grave mistake.
“O Great Spirits of the Earth, hear my voice and answer my call… please, rid me of this perverted intruder who has trespassed upon my land.”
From nowhere, the girl began to chant.
Ethan’s confusion lasted only a heartbeat.
The next moment, his body lifted off the ground.
Something invisible hoisted him high into the air.
“This… gravity magic?” he breathed in astonishment.
A fraction of a second later, astonishment turned into terror.
The same force hurled him violently backward.
His body slammed into a nearby tree with crushing impact.
The collision sent a shockwave through his spine. Something cracked—or at least felt like it had.
He coughed harshly, pain tearing through his chest.
When he hit the ground, he could not move.
The girl who had done this rose gracefully, regaining her balance, and walked toward him.
“You’re quite sturdy,” she said coldly. “I intended to crush you like an insect… yet you survived with minimal damage.”
She stood over him, staring down with eyes so chilling they sent a shiver through his entire body.
“Who… are you?” Ethan asked, struggling to prop himself against the shattered tree trunk.
He needed to know.
Especially because she seemed… familiar.
He couldn’t stand. The gravity still pinned him down.
She was a witch. That much was obvious.
A witch of the Heart bloodline.
Black-haired.
For reasons he could not explain, the longer he looked at her hair, the more unsettled he felt. So he forced his gaze elsewhere.
“I heard you lost your memory,” she said in a tone laced with hostility. “Judging by your reaction to me, it seems the rumor is true, Ethan Heart.”
“Do I know you?” he asked cautiously.
A girl who hated him—or rather, hated the previous owner of this body.
She bent down until her face aligned with his.
“My name is Luna Heart. And yes… you know me very well.”
She paused deliberately.
“I am the younger sister of your captain—Moon Heart.”
“Huh?”
That was all he managed.
Without thinking, his gaze drifted to her hair again.
Seeing that, a strained smile curved across Luna’s lips.
“Your thoughts are painfully obvious,” she said. “You think I’m lying, don’t you? Because of my hair color.”
“No, I—”
“It doesn’t matter what you think,” she cut him off sharply. “I don’t care… but ..”
Her expression darkened abruptly.
“Tell me, Ethan Heart… why in hell do I smell my sister Moon on you?”
The question came out of nowhere.
“Smell? What are you talking about?”
Ethan instinctively sniffed himself—and stiffened.
After taking a deeper breath, he detected a faint feminine fragrance clinging to his clothes.
Moon’s, no doubt.
She had been in his room.
But it was subtle. Barely noticeable.
Yet this girl had caught it immediately.
’Is she a dog or something?’
The thought flickered in his mind.
Then he realized—judging by the way her expression grew increasingly terrifying—that he might have said it out loud.
“You just thought something insulting, didn’t you?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
He turned his head away.
Luna grabbed his chin and forced him to look directly into her eyes.
They were unhinged.
Obsessive.
“As I suspected,” she hissed. “There is something going on between you and my sister. Admit it. What are you trying to do to her?”
Her voice carried a threat beneath it.
“Nothing! There’s nothing between us!” Ethan protested immediately. “We’re just members of the same squad! I swear!”
He tried to pull away.
It was useless.
The gravity magic was far too strong.
“Something inside me says you’re lying… but fine. I’ll choose to believe you.”
Fortunately, the strange witch did not press further.
She stepped back, and the gravity dissipated instantly.
“Stay away from my sister,” she warned.
Ethan exhaled in relief, pushing himself to his feet and retreating several meters.
“I will. So please, stay away from me as well.”
“Why are you so afraid?” she tilted her head. “It’s not like I was trying to kill you.”
“You were! You literally said you wanted to crush me!”
Luna fell silent, contemplating that.
Then she sighed.
“I admit… I may have overreacted slightly. My apologies if I caused you harm.”
The apology came so suddenly that Ethan had no idea how to respond.
But from that alone, he realized she wasn’t completely deranged.
At least… not entirely.
He decided to take advantage of the shift in mood.
“It’s fine. No need to apologize. In that case… would you guide me to the Forest Witch’s dwelling?”
That caught her off guard.
“You have business with my Lady?”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Now that I think about it… a knight shouldn’t even be capable of reaching this place.”
The realization dawned late.
Ethan had already passed the witches’ labyrinth.
Before either of them could speak further, a third voice interrupted.
“I invited him, dear Luna… so please guide him to the witch’s cottage.”
The voice came from everywhere at once.
Both Ethan and Luna heard it clearly.
They recognized it instantly.
The voice of the Witch—Vanessa.
She had been watching them.
“At once, Master!” Luna replied, gesturing for Ethan to follow.
“I don’t know what a knight like you is doing here. But if my Lady wishes to see you, I have no right to object. Follow me.”
She led the way.
Ethan nodded and followed behind her.
Watching her from the back, he still wasn’t entirely convinced she was Moon’s sister.
But the crimson eyes were undeniable.
She was no ordinary girl.
An obsessive one.
Willing to kill for her so-called sister.
’Best not get entangled with her in the future.’
Ethan made a quiet mental note.
To keep his distance.
