Chapter 13: The Complete Family
Chapter 13: The Complete Family
Nestled deep within the misty valleys of Mount Hirashi, a sacred and secluded peak hidden from the eyes of the ordinary world, exists a formidable bloodline—the Phoenix Clan.
For generations, this clan has honed its own ancient martial arts, a deadly blend of speed, precision, and agility. Every child born into the clan is trained from the moment they can walk—disciplined in combat, stealth, and philosophy. They grow up not in comfort, but in fire and storm. This is the way of the Phoenix—to burn, to fall, and to rise again, stronger.
While the outside world knows little of their secluded home, the underworld knows their name well. Whispers of the Phoenix Clan strike fear in even the most powerful circles. When a child of Phoenix turns fifteen, tradition demands they leave the mountain—to explore, to learn, and to serve where fate guides them.
Those who cross them and choose the wrong side rarely live to speak of it.
Among them is a man both feared and respected—Captain Ken. He leads one of the elite operational squads of the clan and has earned the title: “The Watcher.” Silent as the wind, sharp as a blade, and known to observe from the shadows long before he strikes, Ken is a shadow among men.
It is said that when Ken chooses to watch over someone, not even Death can get past him.
Miles returned home after his morning run, a thin layer of sweat still clinging to his skin. The air inside was warm, filled with the aroma of breakfast and the sound of laughter.
Hope and Asher darted through the living room, giggling, their new toys in hand—one was wearing a plastic knight’s helmet, the other was pretending to fly a toy spaceship. Their footsteps echoed off the wooden floor, their joy filling the house with life.
At the dining table, Elena was setting plates with her usual quiet grace. She looked up and offered a soft smile.
“Son, freshen up and have your breakfast,” she said, brushing a stray hair behind her ear.
“Can’t wait, Mom,” Miles grinned, walking past them toward the shower.
The warm water washed off the sweat but not the thoughts lingering in his mind. Despite the laughter in the air, despite his mother’s smiles… he could always see through it. There was a sadness in Elena she never showed, a pain carefully tucked behind her soft expressions. Watching her husband lie unconscious in the hospital—it was slowly breaking her. But she never let it show. Not in front of the kids. Not even in front of him.
He returned to the table, hair damp, and joined the family for breakfast. Elena served him with a gentle touch, and he offered a grateful smile. As he picked up his fork—
Bzzzz…
His phone vibrated on the table. Dr. Reyes.
Miles picked up. “Yes, Dr. Reyes. What is it?”
A breath on the other side. “Boss… I have good news—and bad.”
“Speak.”
“The good news is… Daniel has regained consciousness.”
Miles froze. A heavy silence fell over him for a beat. “And the bad?”
“The drug’s aftereffects… They’ve impacted his spine. He won’t be able to walk for a while. But the condition is temporary—he will recover.”
Miles exhaled slowly, jaw clenched but eyes soft.
“I understand. Thank you, Dr. Reyes. I owe you one.”
“It’s nothing you owe me, sir,” Reyes replied, his voice quiet. “After all you’ve done for me… this isn’t even close.”
“You embarrass me, Doctor,” Miles said with a light chuckle. “Anyway—we’re coming. Be ready.”
He hung up and looked toward Elena, who caught the expression on his face before he could even speak.
Her hand went to her mouth. “Daniel…?”
Miles nodded slowly. “He’s awake, Mom.”
Tears welled in her eyes instantly, but this time, she didn’t hide them.
Miles stood up from his seat, walked over to where Elena was sitting, and gently wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
She didn’t resist—just leaned into him, her face burying into his side as silent tears finally slipped free. Years of holding it in… cracked open by just a few words.
Miles didn’t say anything. He didn’t have to. His presence alone was the comfort she had long needed.
Suddenly, Asher came running up, his little feet padding quickly across the floor.
“Mama, why are you crying?” he asked, alarmed, looking up at Miles.“Big bro, what happened?”Hope followed right behind, her eyes wide with concern.
Miles bent down and scooped both of them into his arms, pulling them close.
With a soft smile, he whispered,“Your dad… he’s awake.”
The twins blinked, not quite understanding at first.
“Really?” Hope asked, clutching his shirt.
Miles nodded.“Yes. Come on… Let’s go see him.”
The room shifted from tears to a gentle, growing joy—a moment long overdue.
It was Sunday morning. Miles had given Ethan the day off—today, he’d drive the family himself.
He opened the car door and helped Hope and Asher into their seats, buckling them in with care. Elena quietly took the passenger seat beside him. She didn’t say much, only staring out the window with a faraway look in her eyes.
The twins, on the other hand, were buzzing with excitement in the back.
“We’re going to see Daddy” Asher chirped.“Will he talk to us, Mama?” Hope asked, leaning forward.
Elena smiled softly but still didn’t speak. Miles glanced at her, his grip on the steering wheel tightening slightly. He understood.
The ride was quiet, peaceful. Miles drove steadily through the city, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror to check on the kids, and then to Elena—still silent.
The car pulled up in front of the hospital. Miles stepped out first, his gaze scanning the surroundings. The guards at the entrance, now familiar with him, bowed respectfully. Elena stepped out next, her hands lightly clutching her purse, and the twins bounced out of the back seats, full of excitement and questions.
But the hospital wasn’t what it used to be. The dull, overworked environment had been transformed. Elegant lighting, polished floors, and warm interiors now made it look more like a five-star resort than a medical facility. Dr. Reyes had kept his word — everything was spotless and state-of-the-art.
They walked down the hallway. Elena’s steps slowed as they neared the door. Her hand trembled slightly, and Miles quietly reached forward, opening the door for her.
She stepped into the room.
Hope and Asher followed behind her, their eyes wide, trying to understand the weight of the moment.
Miles remained at the doorway, silent, watching.
Inside, the soft beeping of the machines and the warm sunlight filtering through the windows cast a calm glow across the room.
Dr. Reyes turned with a small smile. “Mr. Keller… it’s time to see your family.”
Daniel was lying in bed, slightly propped up by pillows. He looked older, paler than Elena remembered — but his eyes were awake now, alive with recognition. The moment his gaze landed on her, his lips moved with effort.
“…Elena…”
Her breath hitched. Tears spilled before she could stop them. She rushed to his side, gently cupping his face.
“You’re awake… you’re really awake…” she whispered, overwhelmed.
Daniel gave a weak smile, raising a trembling hand to place over hers.
Behind her, Hope and Asher inched closer, staring at the man in the bed.
“Daddy…?” Asher whispered.
Daniel turned his eyes to the twins and gave a faint nod, his eyes misting over.
“My little warriors…” he said softly, a tear escaping down his cheek.
Hope climbed onto the edge of the bed gently, hugging him around the chest. Asher followed, his arms wrapping tightly around his father’s arm.
Elena pressed her forehead to Daniel’s and whispered, “We missed you… every single day.”
Hope leaned in with her usual cheerful spark and said, “Daddy, you know… we have a big bro now. He plays with us, buys us toys and candies, and helps us with homework.”
Daniel blinked. “Big… bro?”
A puzzled look crossed his face.
Miles stepped in, his posture calm but firm, his expression unreadable.
Daniel turned toward the doorway — and froze.
A young man was walking toward him. His face… unfamiliar, yet something in it tugged at old memories. Daniel had never seen this man before. But he’d seen his childhood photo — long ago — in Elena’s trembling hands.
“You are… Miles?” he asked, voice uncertain.
He turned to Elena, confusion in his eyes.
She stood silently, wiping her tears, and gave a faint nod. “He came back,” she said softly, the words heavy with emotion.
Daniel looked into her eyes — eyes that had been searching and waiting for so long. For the first time, he saw peace in them. And that made him smile.
“Come here, son,” Daniel said, his voice growing steadier.
Miles walked forward. He stopped beside the bed, looking down at the man who had been the one constant by Elena’s side.
Daniel reached up and touched Miles’s shoulder gently. “You’re finally here. I heard all about you from Elena. She never stopped waiting… Thank you for coming.”
Miles gave a small nod and replied quietly, “Nice to finally meet you too.”
The hospital room, once heavy with tension and years of longing, now shimmered with a gentle joy.
Laughter echoed softly as Hope sat beside her father, showing him her toy knight, while Asher tried explaining the rules of a game he had completely made up. Daniel listened with a tired but genuine smile, his hand resting over Elena’s. Her eyes, once dim with silent sorrow, now sparkled with tears of happiness.
Miles stood nearby, arms crossed, a rare softness on his usually guarded face. He watched them — not as a soldier, not as a mercenary — but as a son, a brother, a piece of a family finally falling into place.
He turned to Dr. Reyes, who had been quietly observing the moment with a content smile of his own.
“When can we take him home?” Miles asked, his tone calm but hopeful.
Dr. Reyes adjusted his glasses. “Boss, physically he’s stable. We just need to run a few more tests for safety. But don’t worry — the side effects are temporary. His spine will recover. I’ll personally escort him home tomorrow evening.”
Miles gave a small nod of gratitude. “Appreciate it, Doctor.”
Dr. Reyes smiled. “Honestly, I’ve never seen such fast recovery. Love… really is the best medicine.”
Elena looked up at them, her eyes filled with quiet joy — no longer the searching, aching gaze of the past, but one full of light and hope.
Miles caught her glance and gave a small, approving smile. For the first time in years, satisfaction settled in his chest like a calm flame.
For now — they were whole. And for once, the world felt right.
Miles stepped out of the hospital room, gently closing the door behind him. The hallway was quiet, painted in soft tones of amber by the setting sun streaming through the windows. He walked a few steps down the corridor, hands in his pockets, when he suddenly paused.
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
“So… the Watcher being a Watcher just watches, huh? You could at least say hello,” Miles said casually, eyes glancing toward the shadows.
From the dim corner of another hallway, a man emerged — dressed sharply in a long black coat, posture disciplined yet respectful. He stepped forward and gave a deep bow, a perfect ninety degrees.
“Oh—hello, young master. How are you doing?” the man greeted, voice calm, tone playful.
Miles let out a light chuckle. “Come on, Captain Ken. I’m not your young master.”
Ken straightened up but didn’t lose his formal tone. “Well… if our young miss has chosen you, then you are our young master—whether you like it or not.”
Miles sighed, shaking his head with a knowing look. “That girl still doesn’t understand boundaries, does she?”
Ken gave a slight smile. “It’s between you and her. I don’t have a say in it.”
Miles leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “So, you already started watching?”
“I just arrived,” Ken replied. “But your command is my duty. How could I refuse?”
A silence passed, filled only with the quiet hum of the hospital. Then Ken’s eyes grew sharper.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of everything. If it’s your family… then it’s our family too. The Phoenix Clan never lets a family member get hurt.”
Miles gave a firm nod, the warmth in his chest returning at those words.
“Monica must’ve filled you in already?”
Ken smirked. “Of course. She doesn’t miss a thing. And don’t worry, young master… the city is under my watch now. If the Paradise Club dares make a move here…” His smile turned colder. “It’ll become Hell before they can blink.”
Miles gave a low, amused hum. “Good.”
And then he turned, walking away — the protector of his past… now protected by his future.
