Chapter 55: The Confrontation
Evening – Sterling Enterprises, 32nd Floor
The sun had set, leaving the city bathed in glowing amber and shadows. From the towering glass windows of the Sterling Enterprises building, the skyline glittered like a kingdom of ambition. But inside the Chairman’s office, the lights were dim — and the air heavy with anticipation.
On the giant wall screen, the Reaper project headlines had faded, replaced now by something far more serious.
Surveillance footage.
Miles stood in front of the screen, arms crossed, his silhouette reflected against the glass behind him. The screen flickered—grainy security feed from a recently acquired company’s internal archives.
Behind him, June stood with her eyes fixed on the footage.
“Boss, the news is out. The bait’s spreading. But how exactly do we trap them?” she asked.
Miles didn’t turn to face her. Instead, he raised a finger and tapped a command on the remote.
The screen changed — this time, to the infamous confidential folder June had unearthed days ago. Documents, videos, blackmail logs… and buried within them, the proof of his father’s innocence. Of Edward Sterling’s downfall, orchestrated in the shadows.
“You remember this folder you showed me, June.”
His voice was cold, controlled.
“The one that revealed everything… the people behind it. Gibson Winstone. Elfric Willise. My father’s legacy buried because of them.”
June nodded slowly, eyes darkening with resolve.
“And now…” Miles clicked again.
Another video loaded — from a different company’s archive.
Miles tapped the frame, zooming in.
“Look carefully.”
June squinted — then gasped slightly.
“Wait… That’s the same man from the other footage.
Miles turned to face her now.
“Exactly. He’s their errand boy. The one they keep clean on the surface, dark underneath.”
“So this man was sent by them.”
Miles nodded. His voice sharpened.
“Winstone and Elfric are desperate. This Reaper project is their golden ticket. And we’re the only threat standing in the way. That means… they will definitely take action like this.”
June looked at him, piecing it together.
“You think they’ll try to do the same?”
“I don’t think. I know.”
Miles stepped forward, tapping the tablet in June’s hands.
“They’ve done it before. They’ll do it again. This fuels their empire.”
June’s grip tightened around the device.
“Then how do we trap them with this?”
A slow, confident smile crept across Miles’s lips.
“By letting them think they’ve won.”
He turned back toward the giant screen.
“We’ll lower our defenses. Drop the firewall strength to 40%. Make it look like we’ve made a careless mistake. But behind the scenes…”
He pressed a button — the screen split into a 3D model of the building.
“Plant hidden cameras throughout every corridor. Nano-lenses. Invisible to the naked eye. No blind spots. No dead angles. Leave the real cameras alone — let them think they’re avoiding detection.”
He stepped back.
“If they send someone in… we’ll have every move, every face, every word.”
June’s fingers were already dancing across her tablet.
“I’ll contact Monica. We’ll launch an active drone — high-altitude sweep above this entire grid. We’ll have aerial coverage all night.”
“Good.” Miles’s voice dropped, deadly calm.
“Tonight, we set the chessboard. Let the wolves come. Let them smell blood. Let them show us their true faces.”
Scene Shift – Rooftop Surveillance View (Night Begins)
The city stretches wide beneath a navy sky. On the roof of Sterling Enterprises, a drone silently lifts off, its rotors barely making a sound as it vanishes into the dark clouds above.
The camera pans to the building’s edges—security sensors pulsing softly, internal lights dimmed, everything appearing routine… but under the skin?
A trap had been set.
And someone was about to walk straight into it.
Next Morning
The soft golden sunlight filtered through the half-open curtains. Birds chirped gently in the distance. Miles, dressed in a clean, crisp shirt with rolled sleeves, sipped his black coffee while seated.
He clicked play.
On the screen, security footage rolled silently. Shadowy figures crept through Sterling Enterprises corridors during the night—dodging cameras, unaware they were walking into a web of invisible surveillance.
One slipped a flash drive into a port.
Another took pictures of internal blueprints.
Miles leaned back in his chair, smirking with quiet satisfaction.
“Some people never learn…” he murmured.
On the way to the office
Hope and Asher sat in the back seats—backpacks on laps, faces glowing with excitement as the morning sun streaked across the windows.
“Big brooo!” Hope chirped, pressing her face against the glass.
“Summer vacation is coming soon! Will you take us to the beach?”
Asher bounced beside her.
“Yes, yes! Big brooo! We’ve never been to the beach! All our friends bragged about it last year.”
Miles glanced at them through the rearview mirror, a soft smile on his face.
“Of course. We’ll go to lots of places. Beaches, mountains, wherever you want. We’ll eat so much good food, take tons of pictures—”
he winked,
“—so you can make everyone jealous at school.”
“YAYYYY!”
Both twins raised their arms in celebration, laughter filling the car like sunlight.
Hope clutched her brother’s arm as the car slowed near the school gate.
“You’re the best, big bro!”
“I know. Now go. Enjoy your day. And no pranks today—at least not on your teacher.”
“No promises!” Asher smirked, hopping out of the car with a playful salute.
Hope followed, turning back one more time to wave.
Miles waved back, watching until they disappeared into the crowd.
Cut To – City Roads
Now alone in the car, Miles exhaled slowly, shifting gears. The city’s skyline loomed ahead like a kingdom waiting to be ruled.
Sterling Enterprises called.
The battle was not over.
But for a few fleeting minutes, he wasn’t Ghost, or Chairman, or Strategist—just a big brother, driving through morning light.
He shifted lanes and pressed down the accelerator, engine humming like thunder beneath calm skies.
Stone Enterprises – Chairman’s Private Office
Late Morning
The room was bathed in cold artificial light, every edge sharp, every surface sterile. No warmth. No chaos. Just ruthless precision.
Gibson Winstone stood near a digital table, arms behind his back, eyes fixed on the floating hologram. Across the screen: a digital copy of a construction quotation—stamped, formatted, official. The header read:
Sterling Construction & Real Estate — Star Harbor Project Quotation (DRAFT)
Elfric Willise leaned forward, fingers steepled, reading the numbers line by line.
“It was easier than we thought,” Winstone said, his voice low, amused.
He gestured at the screen.
“They dropped this into our hands like a rookie mistake. This… is gold.”
Elfric’s brows furrowed.
“Look at the price they’re quoting… it’s shockingly low.”
He tapped on a line item.
“They’re either insane, or they genuinely don’t care about profit.”
Winstone turned to face him, one eyebrow raised.
“**That’s what concerns me. A project this massive requires a mountain of resources. Either they’re bluffing, or they’ve got something—someone—backing them.”
Elfric stood and began pacing slowly.
“If they file this quotation, and it’s real… we’ll definitely lose the project. Even Reaper can’t ignore a figure like this.”
A pause settled between them.
Then Elfric asked, quietly:
“Should we back out? Let this one go…?”
Winstone turned sharply, eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about? Are you afraid of a name that fell 17 years ago?”
“No, but—”
“We have businesses. Machines. Materials. Workers. Land. If we need more, we take loans. If that’s not enough, we sell off some dead assets. Easy.”
He stepped toward the screen again.
“This is a Reaper-backed project. If we win this… our name will be tied to theirs. Our portfolio will explode. We’ll land contracts across the country. Maybe international.”
Elfric crossed his arms, nodding slowly.
“So… we take the risk? Go all in?”
“Exactly. One risk. One win. That’s all we need.”
“Alright. Then let’s draft our quotation.”
Elfric smirked.
“Let’s keep our price just under theirs. Squeeze them out completely.”
The vibrant hum of activity echoed through the floors of Cinder Square. Inside the heart of the media division, large LED panels displayed live broadcasts, market tickers, and breaking news. Studio lights flickered on and off as cameramen moved between shooting sessions, and editors rushed through glass-paneled corridors.
Miles, dressed sharply in charcoal black, calmly supervised the workspace, walking past bustling teams with quiet authority. Behind him, June followed closely, tablet in hand.
As they passed, employees straightened slightly, offering polite bows and nods of respect.
“Boss—” June spoke, a touch of excitement in her voice,
“This month’s revenue from Cinder Square is off the charts. Ever since the market went into chaos… brands lined up just to advertise here.”
Miles glanced at her with a subtle smile.
“Good. Disruption comes with its rewards.”
He paused, then added,
“Give the employees a bonus this month. Across the board.”
June tapped it into her tablet instantly.
“Understood. Already drafting the list.”
They turned toward the executive elevators.
“Tomorrow’s the day.” June said.
“The final result for the Star Harbor project quotations.”
Miles nodded slowly.
“Then let’s file our quotation tonight. No secrets. No hidden play.”
He looked ahead with intent.
“Let’s do it publicly. Let the wolves watch.”
Evening – Star Central Mall, Reaper Entertainment Quotation Office
The Star Central Mall was ablaze with lights. Reporters swarmed outside the Reaper Entertainment Event Hall, where a live Q&A was underway. Logos and banners fluttered overhead — a rare scene where corporations made war with numbers, not bullets.
Inside, the atmosphere was no less tense. A stream of representatives from major firms had already submitted their bids. Cameras clicked. Papers rustled.
As Miles and June walked through the main entrance, heads turned.
The staff and officers around the Reaper booth immediately recognized him. Whispers followed. Several employees and security members bowed gently in acknowledgment.
“Good evening, sir.”
Miles returned the nods with calm composure.
He and June made their way toward the private conference wing — where bids were filed in person for the sake of transparency.
And just as they neared the doors…
Two men emerged from the Reaper Office.
They didn’t notice Miles at first. Their faces were confident, their suits immaculate, their voices low and smug as they discussed something beneath their breath.
Then—
Winstone glanced up. Froze.
His eyes met Miles’s.
For just a second, the mall’s buzz faded away.
Miles stood still, unreadable.
June’s grip on the tablet tightened ever so slightly.
Elfric turned, noticed too — the smirk briefly flickering.
