Chapter 171: Rescue
Translator: Dragon Boat Translation Editor: Dragon Boat Translation
When Han Jin charged into the dense forest, the mercenaries there did not panic. Despite the fact that Han Jin proved to be a big threat and had even killed one of the well-known mercenary captains, these mercenaries, who constantly lived their lives on the edge, had trained themselves to have a very strong mental fortitude. The men in front started to attack Han Jin, while the rest of the mercenaries continued to throw out magic and arrows like their lives depended on it, trying to destroy the magic barrier Yalina had casted. This was not simply an attempt at eliminating the final target of the mission. Be it those who had underestimated Yalina or those who had stayed alert, they all understood that under no circumstances should a magus be allowed to have enough time to cast a large scale offensive spell! Otherwise, a catastrophe would be unavoidable.
In reality, the mercenaries still had the upper hand. The only ones who could move forward were Han Jin and Reg while Moxinke, Cessacioun, and Sunier could only hide within the magic barrier. The enemies had too many magicians and archers. The three would be killed the instant they stepped out of the magic barrier. The mercenaries on the other hand, had already sent in a dozen warriors who roared and charged across the river in a flanking formation. The mercenaries’s tactics were well developed; as long as the warriors could draw the attention of the enemy magicians, their friends in the forest could drop all defenses and focus their effort on casting offensive spells. The sole purpose of their strategy was to end the fight as soon as possible!
Julia and Edwina looked at each other, and Julia immediately took out a crisp green arrow. She slowly drew her bow and took aim at the mercenaries charging in from the left. Edwina immediately understood Julia’s intention and hastily warned Sunier, “You guys take the right side!”
“Cessacioun, to your right!” Sunier yelled.
A swarm of ferocious faces started to draw near. After all, the mission reward was 3 Dragon Crystals! Even if each one of them were to only get a small portion, it was enough for them to live without worry for the rest of their life. If they ever get tired of their dangerous life, they could very well retire early and enjoy the rest of their lives in peace. Who wouldn’t fight so hard knowing this may very well be the last time they would have to?
The young magicians, seeing their enemies approaching at a rapid pace, appeared to be a little flustered. Cessacioun roared, “Use all of your magic power! Attack! Attack!!” Even before he finished his sentence, he had already cast an enormous fireball which landed squarely on a mercenary in the forefront.
The fireball exploded on the mercenary with a giant boom, but in the next moment, the mercenary immediately charged out of the soaring flames. Even though his breastplate was almost completely destroyed and exposing his black chest hair, his fighting strength diminished, and his mouth and ears were leaking blood from the impact, he still continued to charge forward with a roar, completely disregarding his own life.
Sunier raised her hand and immediately fired an arrow which accurately shot through the mercenary’s wide open mouth with lightning speed. The mercenary’s body flew backward as if someone had punched him squarely in the face and slammed into his companion behind him. Unfortunately, his companion ruthlessly kicked him aside and replaced his position.
It seems the saying “A man will die for money and a bird will die for food” still applies no matter which world you are in!
Beads of sweat started to appear on Julia’s forehead, and she finally let go of her arrow. A green light flashed, and a swarm of thick, black roots immediately crawled out of the ground without any warning, instantly trapping the mercenaries who were charging in from the left.
“Treefolk Arrow! It’s Julia!!” a few mercenaries screamed in desperation.
The Mercenary Team of Red Vanguard was quite famous. Even those who didn’t know much about their members would be able to recognize them by their power, and Treefolk Arrow happened to be Julia’s signature move!
In reality, Treefolk Arrow wasn’t lethal, and could, at most, trap them for a short amount of time. On top of that, using Treefolk Arrow always took a big toll on Julia’s stamina which meant she couldn’t continue her attack. But one must remember that Julia and Edwina were sisters and never left each other’s side. The mercenaries knew their fate was sealed the moment the roots broke out of the ground.
Edwina didn’t disappoint. A bowl sized, bloody hole appeared on the mercenary’s forehead, seemingly out of nowhere, accompanied by a shower of blood, brain, and shattered bones. Before the other mercenaries could even recover from the shock of seeing such a horrifying image, another mercenary’s neck was hit. The arrow struck with such immense force it somehow decapitated him, and his head flew high into the air with a jet of blood.
“Edwina is here too! Ripping Wind Arrow!!” another mercenary screamed pointlessly.
Of course Edwina was there. The two elf sisters’ cooperation had always been seamless; one was responsible for control, and the other for killing. Countless troublesome holy animals had already fallen under their hands. After being trapped, the mercenaries’s fighting strengths were rendered useless. They were basically easy targets at that point. After all, even a Supreme Knight wouldn’t dare ignore the combined attack of two tenth-grade rangers!
“Gibran, what’s the fucking meaning of this?!” the other two mercenary captains roared in anger.
“Meaning?” Gibran let out a low sigh, then said, “We too should…”
Just then, another ring of magic detection flashed by. Gibran’s face instantly froze. As powerful as he was, he had to go invisible before he could use any of it. He couldn’t very well walk up to their face, could he? He wasn’t a warrior! But the master magus’s special “care” for him had basically handicapped him. It was a very annoying feeling, but it also made him worried.
Not everyone could learn from their failure quick enough. Sometimes, one man’s blood is far from enough! In their rush to destroy Yalina’s magic barrier, the mercenaries had only sent a few men to stop Han Jin, a mistake they would dearly pay for right about now!
As a barrage of arrows flew toward Han Jin, his body again sunk into the ground, then immediately appeared behind the magicians. A streak of rainbow colors shot through the side of the magician’s chest, followed by Han Jin swinging his right fist with all his strength into the back of the magician in front of him. The magician’s spine instantly shattered to dust, while his body twisted into a strange position. He felt the back of his head touching something soft and realized it was his butt as everything turned black.
Han Jin’s body seemingly turned into an arrow – a strange and unpredictable arrow. It was also like a breeze – an erratic and formless breeze. He darted between the trees with extreme speed, sometimes leading the streak of brilliant rainbow colors, while sometimes having the rainbow streak shoot past him, covering him in a wave of blinding light.
Han Jin had no intention of attacking the archers and focused his attention on the magicians. Everywhere he went, a storm of blood followed! Even though the magicians hastily casted their magic barriers, they could only block Han Jin’s fist. Faced with the brilliant streak of rainbow colors, the magic barrier created by their magic powers was far too weak and broke with only a touch, followed by splashes of blood!
On top of that, Han Jin was too fast. Combined with the rainbow streak’s cover, it was very difficult for the archers to lock onto him. They also had their hands tied for fear of hurting their allies. The warriors that attempted to surround him also appeared very clumsy and couldn’t catch up to Han Jin at all. Even though their movements were more clever and sometimes even managed to corner Han Jin, a simple Earthmeld later, Han Jin would appear again in the distance!
It could be said that Han Jin was a man who cherished his life, because no matter what he did or wanted to accomplish, he ensured his own survival first, or else everything would be an illusion. That was the reason why he used the earth element to create the charm for Earthmeld only after absorbing the earth element magic crystal – so stingy he even refused to make the Faked Earth Corpse for Moxinke.
Han Jin wasn’t being selfish. After all, he was the only one that could utilize the Daoist Arts to their fullest potential, and there wasn’t any room for waste at this stage. Even though he didn’t help Moxinke, he never forced responsibilities onto him either. In fact, what he was doing was something Moxinke should be responsible for; he had long since piled all the important duties onto himself!
Some of the mercenaries were smart. A magician, seeing Han Jin charging straight for him, stood his ground and suddenly released an arc of lightning. Han Jin’s body suddenly froze for a moment while a green web immediately tightly wrapped around him. Art of Cobweb!
That was a rare window of opportunity. One after another, spells landed onto Han Jin and made quite a colorful scene. Maybe due to Han Jin’s display of extreme speed and strange movements, the magicians all decided to choose debuff spells; not a single offensive spell was used.
This was the first time Han Jin had suffered a barrage of large scale spells. His legs felt heavy, as if they were filled with lead, while his vision mysteriously turned black. Luckily, he had already released many unassuming wooden bugs which alerted him of any abnormalities in the forest, allowing him to see the changes around him.
A dark magician somehow managed to hide among the mass of magicians. Han Jin felt his body becoming extremely weak. His stomach felt empty and he seemed to have lost all of his strength. One after another, sad images flashed across his brain; some about his longing for another world, and some about the foreignness of this one. There was even fear and a sudden weariness. He wanted to turn around and leave, but even more bizarrely, he didn’t want to move anymore. Let them kill me. Maybe this way, I can return to my world.
The archers’s faces lit up and they started to draw their longbows, all aiming at Han Jin. But at this crucial moment, a ray of white light started to shine around Han Jin. Dispel Magic! Instantly, the light from the assortment of magic disappeared without a trace!
Yalina’s eyes started to shine at the same time. She suddenly understood many, many things. Fighting did not stop at personally killing enemies. It included other important things, for example, protection, and rescue!
As Han Jin charged in, she unconsciously split a piece of her psychic force and attached it to Han Jin. For anyone else, doing so would serve little purpose. Only her magus level psychic could monitor someone from a far distance, and only her dominating advantage in magic powers could instantly dispel all debuffs!
