Chapter 171: Surprising (1)
Michael sat across from the smiling figure of Sylvia who had taken her spot behind the headmaster’s mahogany desk. Judging by her demeanor, it was clear this was not the first time she’d done this.
“You’ve got me intrigued Michael,” she began, “Bart told me that your unique soul is something that he’s never seen before. Could it be that it is finally awakened?”
He was a little taken aback. It seemed that the headmaster had spoken about him in more detail than he first thought. Michael wasn’t sure what to think about this, but he had already decided to consult the woman about his problem in the man’s absence.
If she already knew about him, it would make things easier.
Of course when it came time to actually explain the trait itself, Michael struggled. Only when he tried to justify his explanation to someone else besides Melody and Rudy did he realize just how nonsensical it sounded.
The fact that he could go back in time and view events through the eyes of the long deceased mages was something that even he had trouble believing. If it hadn’t happened more than once, or he hadn’t discovered the runes for the light element—he would have never come to such a conclusion.
The woman listened patiently as he explained the dreams and his theory, still wearing the same expression. It was as if she was unflappable, even in the face of such mystery.
After he was done, Sylvia didn’t respond for a while, evaluating him with her hazel eyes. He had trouble gauging her reaction. Did she believe him? Or did she think it was just the ramblings of a child?
“So you’re saying that you think your unique soul has the ability to traverse the span of time? You believe these events were something that happened in the past?” Sylvia asked almost conversationally.
“Yes. More specifically, I think these events took place before the great war.” Michael replied with confidence. There was no other explanation, at least that he could think of.
The woman nodded, tapping on the table softly. “Forgive me Michael, your story is quite difficult to believe. As someone with a unique soul myself, I’m certainly aware of their capabilities.”
Michael’s eyes widened slowly at the admission.
She has a unique soul too?
Yet before he could ask anything more, the woman continued. “My own unique soul gives me a higher affinity to mana—allowing me to not only replenish my mana almost instantaneously, but it also gives me greater speed and control in weaving spells.”
“This trait is something that the royal family considers at the apex of soul traits. But compared to what you claim your soul can do, it seems quite lacking…”
Michael tried to hide his surprise. From the sound of it, Sylvia was someone who could be considered a master mage just from this ability alone. But her insinuation wasn’t lost on him.
If her trait was considered the best of the best, then it was almost impossible to believe his soul indeed had such an ability.
It looks like I have no choice but to show her… he thought, feeling a little resentful. He knew that it was too much to expect someone to believe him at face value.
“I know you don’t believe me, but I think I have a way of convincing you,” he said, letting out a small sigh. “During my second dream, I saw a lost art with unfamiliar runes…”
He purposefully hid that these runes were used in healing magic, just in case. While Sylvia seemed trustworthy, it didn’t hurt to be cautious—especially when he was counting on using these runes as contribution to create his own noble house.
“Oh? Did you perhaps manage to record these runes?” She asked. Though her words might seem interested, her tone was quite the contrary. It appeared that she might just be humoring him.
Yet instead of taking offense, Michael nodded.
Sylvia held out her hand, as if expecting him to hand her a piece of parchment for her inspection, leading to an awkward moment.
“Ah, I’ll just draw them if you don’t mind.” He said, mobilizing his crimson mana towards his fingertip.
At this, Sylvia’s expression showed a hint of surprise, but she soon nodded and retrieved her hand. Yet this time when she looked at him, there was a hint of expectation.
Without any fanfare, Michael began to draw the foreign elemental runes in the air with his mana. Since he’d been studying them for the past three weeks non-stop, he was familiar enough to draw them without any references.
Unlike the first time he drew it, the rune showed no signs of being unstable. The moment he completed the final stroke, his red mana glowed with power, becoming solid in an instant.
He focused on the task at hand, slowly recreating the runes in the manner in which he’d seen in his dream. Of course he was only able to complete the outer layer of the magic circle—but this was as far as he’d gotten with his current spellcrafting knowledge.
With the final stroke of mana, Michael let out a small sigh of satisfaction and lowered his hand. His eyes moved to Sylvia, half expecting her to be criticizing his handiwork with an impassive expression.
However, the woman was currently almost unrecognizable.
Her jaw had dropped, leaving her mouth agape as she stared at the floating runes in front of them.
“W-what are these runes!? I’ve never seen them before in my life.” She stammered, unable to hide her shock. This was the first time he’d seen her lose composure, bringing him a small sense of satisfaction.
“I believe it’s the runes for the light element…” Michael added, trying to hide the smugness in his tone. If she didn’t believe him before, this display should hopefully change her mind.
“The light element!? As in, the one used for healing magic!?” She squawked, her voice rising a few octaves.
Huh? She knew it was for healing magic? Michael suddenly paled, realizing his mistake.
It seemed he had underestimated the knowledge of the woman in front of him.
