“Captain!” the girl gasped, rushing to her side.

The male soldier flinched, catching her before her head struck the stone. She was hot to the touch, her face burning from the drink. Together, the pair half-carried, half-dragged her toward her tent.

Inside, they laid her gently upon her blanket.

“Please rest, Lady Zenith,” the goblin girl whispered kindly, brushing silver hair from Arisha’s face.

“Sleep well, Captain,” the male added.

Arisha’s lashes fluttered, her drunken eyes blinking at them once. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. Instead, she let her gaze drop shamefully toward the ground.

The two bowed, then left her alone, the flap of the tent closing behind them.

Silence.

Her chest rose and fell heavily. Her lips trembled. She turned her head into the pillow, biting it hard.

Her fingers shook as she reached up to her armor. With clumsy, urgent movements, she unclasped the leather straps, piece by piece. Her breastplate thudded onto the floor, followed by her pauldrons. She tore her gloves away, her fingers trembling, pale skin flushed with wine and fever.

Her breath hitched as she pushed off her tunic, leaving her bare skin exposed to the cool air.
