Ichigo felt the warmth of her touch on his head. He tried to speak, but tears choked his words away.

“Ichigo, I’m sorry.” She said softly, “I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there as you grew up. But being able to see you again makes mom so happy…”

Before she could continue, he pulled her into a tight embrace. When she tried to speak again, she found her own cheeks wet with tears.

The words on her tongue remained unspoken, replaced by gentle pats — just like soothing a baby in swaddling clothes…
