Chapter 29: Keep What You Kill
Chapter 29: Keep What You Kill
[ Suggestion Accepted ]
[ Preparing Adventurer Guild Flyers ]
[ Open the cabinet behind you to your left. The flyers are in there.] The system’s cold voice announced.
A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips upon hearing the notification. He let out a sigh of relief and turned his attention back to Gregor.
Without saying a word, he stood up, walked over to the cabinet, opened it, and pulled out a stack of papers. Turning back, he placed them on the table.
Gregor glanced at the stack before looking back at Sage, confusion flickering in his eyes. “What’s this?”
Sage patted the stack with a smile. “This is what’s going to get us tons of missions.”
“Okay,” Gregor muttered slowly as he picked up one of the flyers and began to skim through it.

Gregor raised his head and looked at Sage, who wore an odd expression while smiling at him. “Are you sure this will work?”
Sage nodded confidently. “Of course it will! Don’t underestimate the power of curiosity.”
“So you want me to spread these around the city?” Gregor asked with narrowed eyes.
Sage leaned back in his chair and nodded. “That’s basically it. Distribute the flyers throughout the city; even if only a few people come to commission missions initially, as our guild’s reputation grows, more will follow suit. All you have to do is bring in Adventurers.”
Gregor fell silent for a moment as he considered Sage’s words before looking back at him with concern. “What if other Adventurers come here on their own? Will that affect me?”
“No,” Sage replied firmly, shaking his head. “It won’t affect you in the slightest; your job is simply to bring in Adventurers for rewards.”
“Good!” Gregor exclaimed with relief as a smile crept onto his face.
“So how do I go about this? Do I just throw them around or something?” He waved one of the flyers in front of Sage.
“Yeah, that’s pretty much it. You can distribute them in various places, like crowded areas, or hand them out to people passing by,just make sure the flyers reach as many folks as possible,” Sage said with a shrug.
Gregor nodded and took the stack of papers. “Alright, Guildmaster. Don’t worry; I promise I’ll complete this mission.”
“Good! With this effort, it won’t be long before this place is overflowing with missions and adventurers,” Sage replied, a glint of excitement flashing in his eyes.
As Gregor stood up, he hesitated for a moment and pulled out the Mission Docket. “By the way, what should I do with this?”
“You can keep it! Think of it as a memento from your first mission as an adventurer,” Sage explained.
“Okay,” Gregor nodded. “But what about the beast materials, the beast core, beast essence, and others? Isn’t that part of the mission? I thought i have to hand them over to the Guild.”
Sage gave Gregor a puzzled look. “What would I do with those things?”
“Wait! You mean the Guild doesn’t take parts from beasts?” Gregor’s eyes widened in shock.
“Exactly! Apart from completing your mission, any spoils you obtain belong entirely to you. You can do whatever you want with them,” Sage shrugged again.
Gregor was frozen in place, his lips trembling. “Yo…you…mean I don’t have to hand over my loot?”
Sage was confused by Gregor’s reaction; he couldn’t understand why something so straightforward would leave him so stunned. Suddenly, realization struck him like lightning: he remembered what Pax had said at the tavern.
He understood now why Gregor was shocked,it stemmed from their experiences in dungeons controlled by Noble Houses where warriors were required to surrender ninety percent of their loot.
This practice had been ingrained in every warrior’s mind for so long that they subconsciously believed they had to hand over whatever they found during missions assigned to them.
Seeing Gregor still dazed and struggling to grasp this new reality stirred pity within Sage.
“Ahem!”
Sage cleared his throat to snap Gregor out of his trance.
“Listen up,” Sage said firmly while squinting at him. “Whenever an adventurer accepts a mission, all you’re required to bring back is proof that you’ve completed it,that’s it.”
He paused for emphasis before continuing seriously, “Any other loot or treasure you find during your mission is yours to keep. The Guild operates legitimately; we’re not like those nobles who have oppressed you for ages.”
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Gregor felt exhilaration wash over him as he looked at Sage. “This feels too good to be true! I thought I’d have to hand everything over to the Guild!”
Sage smiled warmly. “That’s how we operate here,we’re not scammers or oppressors like those nobles; we’re just running a legitimate business.”
“Hahaha!” Gregor laughed heartily. “I can just imagine how other Warriors would react to this news. They’d be itching to register as Adventurers! The thought of keeping all their loot is simply irresistible.”
Sage nodded, pondering for a moment before asking curiously, “If you know you have to hand over your loot, like the various monster parts, why not just leave them behind and walk away from the corpses?”
Gregor shook his head with a bitter smile. “You don’t get it, Guildmaster. It’s not that simple. For Warriors like us, the only way to grow stronger is by accumulating resources. Sure, absorbing Mana is an option, but that process is agonizingly slow unless you stumble upon a large Mana Pool, which is about as rare as finding a needle in a haystack.”
He returned to his chair and continued, “The quickest path to strength lies in consuming vast amounts of resources. Unfortunately, most of these are found in Dungeons controlled by greedy nobles and powerful figures in this kingdom.”
As he spoke, his teeth clenched with anger, hatred flashing in his green eyes while killing intent flickered across his face.
This unexpected intensity surprised Sage; he hadn’t anticipated such deep-seated resentment from Gregor. But he understood, anyone in Gregor’s position would likely harbor similar feelings.
Taking a deep breath, Gregor went on. “We Warriors have no choice but to enter these Dungeons for the resources we desperately need to grow stronger. Yet we’re forced to surrender ninety percent of what we find, almost all the valuable loot, leaving us with mere scraps. We can’t hide anything or take it out without facing severe penalties that weak Warriors like us simply can’t handle.”
He lowered his head with a sigh. “Even if we don’t want to bring anything out or keep any resources for ourselves, we’re bound by the agreements we’ve signed with them. So whether we like it or not, we have to hand over our loot.”
Sage listened intently, filled with pity for Gregor. Although he was aware of how the powerful exploited others, he hadn’t realized just how deeply entrenched this system was.
Essentially, whenever Warriors entered a Dungeon under someone else’s control due to their “agreement,” they were compelled to relinquish their hard-earned treasures, and Dungeons were essentially treasure troves brimming with rare items and resources.
For these Warriors, it had become second nature,a reflex — to hand over whatever they acquired without question; that’s exactly what was happening with Gregor now.
In his subconscious mind, he felt as though he had entered another Dungeon and was obligated to turn over his loot to Sage.
“Damn! What a messed-up world,” Sage murmured softly as he shook his head at Gregor.
“But remember what I said earlier: here in the Guild, you don’t have to hand over any loot or treasures you find during your missions, they’re all yours.”
Gregor’s eyes misted over as he listened, gratitude shining in his gaze. He grasped Sage’s hands, shaking them repeatedly in appreciation.
“Hah! This guy must have suffered a lot,” Sage thought to himself, feeling a wave of pity wash over him. “What a bunch of greedy people; how could they treat someone like this?”
Stepping out from behind the desk, Sage wrapped Gregor in a quick hug before guiding him toward the table, assisting him with the various sacks filled with parts from the Phantom Wind Wolves.
They walked together towards the Guild entrance in silence, Sage supporting Gregor as they made their way to the door.
“Guildmaster, don’t worry! I’ll bring in plenty of customers… I mean adventurers, just you wait,” Gregor said earnestly as he looked at Sage.
“I believe you’ll keep your promise. Just go home and rest for now; you can hand out flyers later. You’ve worked hard,” Sage replied, giving Gregor a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Gregor nodded and waved at Sage as he stepped out of the Guild Hall. His shadow stretched across the ground while sunlight enveloped him before he quickly disappeared into the bustling streets.
Sage lingered at the entrance for a moment, shaking his head. “What a poor lad,” he murmured.
Returning to his desk, the pity in his eyes faded away, replaced by a mischievous glint and a proud smile,as if he had accomplished something significant.
“System, open my Status Panel and the Guild Status Panel.”
