Kael sang loudly as he stood on Lavinia’s side, holding her hand.

She answered with a snort.

Alrisa shrugged with a chuckle, and Kael laughed out loud. Lavinia pinched Kael’s hand, and he quickly looked another way.

The rest of the Velmourns laughed at that. They sang another round, their voices blending with the others.

The boots struck the ground in perfect unison.

And then, mid-step, Kael’s smile faded.

He missed the next beat. His eyes shifted away from the circle, looking east, where the Velmourns usually stayed.

“What happened?”

Lavinia noticed immediately and asked in a soft breath. She stopped dancing too.

Kael didn’t answer right away. He glanced at Morvain, seeing what she was doing, then grabbed Lavinia’s hand and—

“We need to leave.”

“What happened?”

“Found him.”

Kael spoke, and in an instant, Lavinia’s expression changed.

The two of them rushed to Morvain and—

“Follow us.”

He ordered before he jumped in the air with Lavinia in his arms.

For a moment, Morvain blinked in surprise, confused.

Korvath and Kayden seemed confused too. Morvain, however, quickly came to her senses, summoned her flying beast, and—

The family inside—a father, a mother, and one child—froze in place. The child sat cross-legged in the corner, head bent over the old stone slate, writing something with a big smile on his face.

His eyes seemed so pure and gentle that it was almost impossible to tell what he was actually doing. His quill moved quickly; everything happened so fast that he hadn’t even reacted to the people who had barged into his house.

Or maybe he did, and his quickened quill was proof of that.

“L-Lord Kael?”

The mother stammered, clutching her shawl tighter.

“What—?”

Kael didn’t answer, neither did Lavinia. They didn’t even look at the parents. Both walked straight across the room, and Kael grabbed the boy’s hand mid-stroke and lifted him in the air.

It was an action that surprised every person in the room, especially the parents. They couldn’t believe what was happening.

The father demanded, stepping forward. His voice still seemed shaken—he obviously knew Kael wasn’t an opponent he could do anything against.
