Chapter 24: The Red Line
Sector Four thrummed with the desperate, frantic energy of a slaughterhouse waiting room.
Beneath the harsh glare of halogen floodlights, hundreds of refugees crowded around a massive plywood barricade. This was the bounty board. It was plastered with requisition forms, hastily scrawled maps, and blood-stained paper.
Ren stood at the edge of the mob, observing the ecosystem.
Men and women in scavenged armor shouted over one another, bartering for the safest assignments. Most of the bounties were low-risk, high-labor tasks: Retrieve medical supplies from the Zone One pharmacy. Clear the feral dogs from the eastern perimeter. Repair the chain-link fencing near Gate Three.
The rewards were pitiful. A handful of military-issue rations. A single bottle of antibiotics. Clean water.
The military was weaponizing starvation. They allowed the refugees to bleed over scraps while the soldiers remained safely behind the concrete walls of the Inner Stadium.
Ren ignored the lower half of the board entirely. He pushed his way through the crowd. He didn’t use his skills or shove anyone; he simply projected a cold, unyielding momentum. People subconsciously stepped out of his path, sensing the unnatural stillness in his posture.
Chloe followed closely in his wake, keeping her eyes firmly fixed on the back of his jacket to avoid the desperate stares of the other scavengers.
Ren reached the plywood wall. His gaze swept past the clustered white papers and locked onto the top left corner.
Pinned beneath a layer of red industrial tape was a single, heavily redacted military dossier. Unlike the hand-written civilian bounties, this was an official Coalition objective. It carried a stark warning stamp.
[Target: Unidentified Subterranean Threat]
[Location: Red Line Transit Hub (Sub-Level 3)]
[Objective: Neutralize threat and secure backup water filtration systems.]
[Reward: Class-A Citizenship (Black Tags) x2. Tier-3 Armory Access.]
Ren scanned the attached casualty report. Two fully armed engineering squads had descended into the transit hub three days ago. Zero survivors. The military had sealed the subway entrance behind them, sacrificing the men to keep whatever lived down there from crawling up to the surface.
A high-level aquatic or subterranean boss. A sealed environment. Dozens of fresh, heavily armed corpses left behind.
To the military, it was a quarantined tomb. To Ren, it was a buffet.
He reached up and tore the dossier from the plywood.
The immediate vicinity fell dead silent. A dozen scavengers turned to stare at him, their expressions caught between disbelief and pity.
“You can’t read, kid?”
Ren turned. A grizzled Coalition quartermaster sat behind a fold-out steel table beside the board, a clipboard resting over his body armor. He held a lit cigarette between his teeth, the cherry glowing dull orange in the gloom.
“That’s a red-tape contract,” the quartermaster grunted, exhaling a plume of acrid smoke. “It means it’s a verified squad-killer. We lost fourteen men down there. Good men. You take that paper, you don’t get a rescue team when you start screaming.”
Ren walked over to the steel table. He placed the dossier flat on the metal surface and tapped the reward line with his index finger.
“Where is the entrance to the Red Line?” Ren asked.
He didn’t boast. He didn’t offer a dramatic threat. He simply requested the logistics.
The quartermaster stopped chewing on his cigarette. He studied Ren, truly looking past the ash-stained hoodie and the dirt. He noted the absolute lack of pupil dilation. The steady, terrifyingly calm heart rate. The way the boy’s shadow seemed to stretch a little too far across the muddy ground.
“Half a mile west of the Stadium,” the quartermaster muttered, tapping a point on the map clipped to his board. “Main subway terminal. We welded the primary security gates shut. You’ll have to find a maintenance hatch.”
“Have the tags ready by morning,” Ren stated.
He folded the dossier, slipped it into his pocket, and walked away.
Chloe hurried to keep up as they navigated back through the sprawling slums of Sector Four. The night air was turning bitterly cold, biting through her thin jacket.
“A flooded subway?” Chloe whispered, glancing nervously at the dark skyline beyond the camp’s walls. “Ren, they sent fourteen soldiers down there with assault rifles. If whatever is down there killed them…”
“Then the monster is strong,” Ren finished her sentence, stepping smoothly over a rusted coil of barbed wire. “Which means it possesses a high-tier core. And it means fourteen abandoned assault rifles are currently lying on the ground, waiting for us to pick them up.”
He stopped at the perimeter fence, looking out into the pitch-black ruins of Zone Two.
The Gluttony skill hummed in his veins, a low, demanding vibration. His Echolocation pulsed, eager to map the subterranean darkness. His Chitin Shell hardened slightly in anticipation of the cold.
“They rely on bullets and flashlights,” Ren said, his voice dropping to a quiet, pragmatic tone. “In the dark, they are blind. We are not. We hunt.”
Ren slipped through a gap in the perimeter fencing, leaving the noise and the misery of Camp Alpha behind. The descent into the Red Line awaited.
