The legendary dragon gods all possess the ability to transmit their will to a Trainer. Of course, if the Trainer won’t open their heart, they can’t hear that will…
But in truth, these beings all use telepathy. So “can’t understand” is mostly them testing the Trainers they’ve chosen.
As the ancient knowledge poured in, Hikaru’s expression turned… odd.
Astronomy, genetics, optics, and… physics!
[Obtained: Ancient Knowledge · Arcane Physics.]
[Description: Known in antiquity as natural philosophy—knowledge that explores the origin of matter, celestial motion, the composition of substances, causes of change, and laws of motion. By delving into this knowledge, one can understand the conversion between different substances and elemental energies, as well as the secret of life’s birth.]
[Origin Theory +5%.]
[Obtained: Ancient Gene-Reconstruction Tech (S): Normally not feasible for a single person—requires extensive instruments and equipment. But ancient gene-tech differs markedly from modern genetics in both theory and practice; it can be performed through alchemy and special powers. Your understanding of genes, molecules, celestial bodies, and physics has risen dramatically!]
[Craftable Tools: DNA Splicers, Genebreaker, Gene Slate.]
[Extras: Mewtwo-manufacture device, cloning apparatus, Pokémon electronic transfer-fusion rig, synchronizer.]
“…So it really is physics?”
No wonder heroes of the void are so rare.
Who on earth could follow this?!
To the ancients, alchemy was a kind of mystical science—something that could bless a kingdom. But talk to them about the cosmos and deep physics, or even genetic engineering? Yeah, right.
“This is the cosmos’ ancient knowledge. ‘Physics’… what is that?” Kyurem sounded puzzled.
Hikaru spread his hands. “It’s the modern name for that ancient knowledge—studying matter, energy, motion, and interactions. From the scale of the universe down to fundamental particles.”
The knowledge was sprawling—and compared to the “physics” Hikaru already knew, this version contained a lot more metaphysics. Yet Hikaru sensed that part was the most important.
It was just… strange enough to make him blurt, so physics doesn’t exist anymore, and stop himself.
Rubbing his brow, he located a method for breaking down the Fantastical Wedge Stone and reconstructing it—helped by the fact that, although it looked like a rock, it wasn’t simply “stone.”
Like Pledge Rock, it looked like a rock—felt like one when struck—but it pulsed with regeneration and the rhythm of life. Rather than a stone, it was more like…
…an egg, or perhaps a miraculous jade.
Any meteorite or comet that carries life can be considered a kind of egg from space. Hikaru got it now: these “stones” aren’t ordinary rock at all, but life-forms in a special, gene-bearing state.
In the games, the DNA Splicers’ transformation is unique: the suspected “Dragon Stone” fragment splits, stretches into helixes, hungrily absorbs some energy saturating Giant Chasm, then—whirling—shifts from circles and spirals into squares and finally into a pyramid.
That’s already beyond normal “machined artifacts,” and looks more like…
…a shape-memory alloy at work.
You usually only see that in sci-fi.
“The Fantastical Wedge Stone is a transformable material you only find in space. If I handed it to a lab, it could push this world’s science forward by a mile.”
“Materials science is the future of the world.”
Hikaru muttered. And when it comes to editing and reconstructing genes, who understands it better than the DNA Pokémon and the genetics Pokémon?
The Master Ball rose; Deoxys slipped out wreathed in light. Giant Chasm’s immense cosmic power made Deoxys feel exceptionally at ease. It kept drawing in the meteorites’ energy to grow.
With potent psychic power, Deoxys scanned the Fantastical Wedge Stone, inspected it carefully, and streamed the data straight into Hikaru’s mind.
“I might need some meteorite pieces…”
Hikaru quickly added a condition.
“No problem. So long as the DNA Splicers get made, you can take as many meteorites as you like. What matters is the Chasm itself—the energy in the rocks is trivial.”
Kyurem began to explain. “This vast, sunken cavern formed when our first body—the shell that bore us from space—shattered. But at that time, we had not yet been born.”
The first body—meaning, the meteorite.
“Reshiram no longer remembers, but I still have faint impressions… Like before all life awakens—only hazy feelings and fracturing images. Yet the body remembers what happened.”
Reshiram blinked her teal eyes. Giant Chasm gave her a nostalgic feeling, but as Kyurem said, the rest was gone.
Kyurem eyed Deoxys with interest.
“A Pokémon from space, hm? Intriguing. Care to talk?”
Kyurem initiating a conversation with Deoxys made Reshiram do a double take. The empty-nest elder dragon normally ignored almost everything outside. Allowing Keldeo to stay had already been surprising—now it was the one approaching a stranger?
Well, given they both knew cosmology, they were “countryfolk” of a sort. Still, Reshiram felt a twinge of melancholy.
She and Zekrom were of one being with Kyurem. Yet when talk turned to the cosmos, she had little to say—no shared language there.
Hmm. Maybe she should absorb more modern knowledge and stock up. Once all three dragons awaken…
“Things like ‘hero’ can be negotiated… That’s what you’re thinking, right?”
“Viewed that way, might as well form a Three-Dragon Council.”
The white dragon started, cheeks warming, and cast a flustered look at Hikaru—who was currently hammering and tinkering.
Don’t just say everything out loud!
I’m simply tired of that old, knee-jerk antagonism!
Reshiram’s heart-voice was beautiful and androgynous—soft, impossible to gender.
“If you want to study, libraries are perfect. There are tons of e-docs online too—” Hikaru mused. Rotom Phones hadn’t been invented yet… but he could make one early.
“How about I rig you a big tablet? Pure voice control—no manual input.”
“As for libraries crammed with knowledge: the Canalave Library in Sinnoh; the various Professors’ labs; Malie Library in Alola; the academy library in Paldea… oh, Oblivia should have archives too.”
Reshiram didn’t quite follow.
Electronics sounded like Zekrom’s thunder domain—creations of the lightning-school of alchemy, right?
Was there nothing… that used fire?
“Fire’s great as industrial energy, but you can’t make electronics out of it.”
“I know you’re wary, but don’t worry—I’ll build a Rotom Phone to operate it for you. The product should be launching around now anyway.”
“Also, isn’t studying in the dream world convenient too?”
If he left a legendary at a Professor’s lab, Hikaru had no doubt the professor would faint from excitement on the spot.
Especially someone of Reshiram’s tier.
The dragons probably wouldn’t enjoy indulging human researchers—but really, what’s the difference between that and those ancient-kingdom alchemists and mystery-science scholars?
As they chatted, Hikaru released his other partners as well.
Giant Chasm is a special, hard-to-reach locale brimming with cosmic energy. Soaking in it was great for “star power.” No need to worry about cosmic radiation—it all got soaked up by Deoxys, and besides, this stuff didn’t seem to harm Pokémon anyway.
“Mm… quite a crowd you have.”
Kyurem watched the team spread out—especially that steel dragon, which had started scraping rock to eat. It hurriedly called out: “Hey—you there. Don’t scrape that.”
Duraludon: “?”
Kyurem: “…Pick up fallen pieces if you must. I like the shape of that wall. Don’t wreck it.”
Forget it. It was in a good mood today; it would ignore the rambunctious tourism. And those blood-thirsty spectators who slipped in to watch the challenge… let them roam.
Kyurem’s chat with Deoxys about the cosmos pulled in a crowd—Solrock, Lunatone, even Clefairy gathered round. These wild Pokémon rarely spoke to Kyurem; turns out, this empty-nest elder dragon was pretty easy to talk to!
Now they knew what topics Kyurem liked—they could strike up conversations next time!
“I’ve heard Clefairy’s ancestors came from space. In other regions, Clefairy have even landed from UFOs—Moon Stones as their power source,” Hikaru asked the Clefairy.
They squeaked excitedly—yes, their clanship had exactly that legend! But after the UFO crashed, it smashed to bits. The local Metang had scavenged the lot—no ruins left to find.
Because when temperatures drop below zero, magnetism strengthens, and the Beldum line living on snowy mountains gets especially lively. Giant Chasm was bitter cold.
Hearing from Kyurem that Hikaru could build strange devices, the Clefairy asked if he could make a spaceship.
“…That’s beyond conventional machinery. No matter how advanced, ground-based machines can’t just head into space. For true spaceflight, my tech…”
Hikaru rubbed his chin. In “future craft,” he could manufacture a Mysterious UFO—the movie prop—but there was no guarantee it could cross the void!
And it was huge.
“I can’t do a spaceship, but a flying machine? That’s doable—if we have materials.”
“However, crafting costs payment. And you all don’t seem to have treasures for payment.”
The Clefairy glanced at each other, suddenly crestfallen.
Fair enough. Giant Chasm’s most common “loot” was meteorites—but those carpeted the ground. Anyone could pick them up. They didn’t need Clefairy to fetch them!
Hikaru had another thought.
Maybe they didn’t need a flying machine at all.
There were tons of Metang here. Why not ask them for rides and experience flight straight away?
“You can float by gathering moonlight in the ‘wings’ on your back, right?” He vaguely recalled a Clefairy tidbit: despite not being Flying-type or having Levitate, they could still “fly.”
“Clefai~?” The Clefairy shrugged.
Giant Chasm was shrouded in fog and snow. You couldn’t always see the moon; no moon meant no flight. Big problem.
As to why… the Clefairy cast a side-eye at Kyurem. Best not say that out loud!
“All right—there’s another way!”
The Clefairy stared blankly as Hikaru called over the sightseeing Lilligant. “Miss Lilligant—please teach the Clefairy the move Role Play.”
Clefairy can’t learn the move by level-up, but a tutor can still teach it.
“Clefairy?”
The Clefairy greeted the pretty Lilligant with an impromptu dance—but still didn’t know what Role Play was for.
“Role Play lets your Ability become the same as your target’s. For example… Miss Lilligant, use Role Play on Solrock.”
The Solrock, mid-cosmic monologue, had no idea what was coming.
Lilligant Role-Played Solrock—her feet slowly rose from the ground, and she drifted up into the air!
“Cle—?!” The Clefairy gasped.
“Solrock’s Ability is Levitate! If you Role Play that Ability, you can fly freely!” Hikaru explained.
He also eyed that Solrock holding court.
The power was immense. The deep-Chasm Pokémon peaked around level 60?
There’s always a higher peak. The Pledge Grove’s fifties weren’t top dog here.
Lilligant found it novel; she’d always moved on the ground—she’d never flown on her own.
Riolu, who was feeling out the energy, and Larvesta, puffing flame like a little rocket, came zipping over.
Riolu tasted the cosmic air—something inside was stirring: meteoric, draconic, metallic magnetism and electromagnetism, the sting of killing frost. He folded his legs mid-air and slipped into Calm Mind.
“Fuu-fuu~” Larvesta blew gentle flames. It had learned Magnet Rise, but it barely mattered—after all, with its feelers, it could fly by jetting fire.
The little buglet spat playful flames, shaping them into figures. She felt her GX power twitch higher—but with little idea what that meant, she tilted her head and blinked it off.
Then her mind went beautifully blank, and a surge of power rushed up from deep within!
[Larvesta learned Amnesia!]
Riolu and Lilligant: “…?”
“Well then… who can’t fly now?” Hikaru laughed. “Pick up a move just by hanging around? Places thick with meteorites really are tied to mental power.”
He felt a jealous stare. Turning, he found the big turtle—and quickly shut up, sheepish.
On second thought, if Torterra trained rock-climbing like Satoshi’s did, and reached the “leaping” tier… wouldn’t that count as flying?
Sure, Rock Climb wasn’t much of a move, but in the right worldview, it had its days.
Don’tworry,comrade.Flight—solvable.Don’t worry, comrade. Flight—solvable.
Iwillhelp.Praiseme! Now!I will help. Praise me! Now!
The mechanical voice of Iron Valiant broke Hikaru’s musing. She used Psychic to hoist Torterra, Walking Wake, and the happily scavenging Duraludon into midair!
All three big ones panicked at first, then realized they could still move freely while held—this “flying” felt great, and soon they were loving it.
Now everyone could fly.
“Thanks—psychic flight is plenty convenient.”
Hikaru’s praise delighted Iron Valiant; she’d be glowing for the rest of the day.
Her mind felt livelier than before, too.
Deoxys took note of Iron Valiant’s Psychic as well. Lifting three big bruisers at once—well, two and a half; Duraludon’s a light metal, not actually heavy—wasn’t trivial.
It spoke well of her telekinetic strength. Deoxys nodded, acknowledging the quality of her power.
Not for nothing—the product crafted as the strongest Psychic Pokémon, even if she wasn’t Psychic-type…
Walking Wake, meanwhile, had other ideas. He drifted over to the meditating Keldeo and began asking the colt for tips:
How did you use water jets to achieve “hydro-flight?”
Keldeo flustered. No one had ever sought him out for move lessons—least of all a powerhouse like Walking Wake.
But… a soft joy welled up inside.
That human craftsman was right—he had his strengths. Focus on them!
After a while in the air, Lilligant didn’t forget to teach the move to the Clefairy, either. Soon a crowd had gathered around her for lessons.
Hikaru mused: he had psychic power too, but not enough to “levitate.” Sabrina and Caitlin, though—both strong telekinetics—could fly on their own.
Mm. Next time he’d ask Caitlin for pointers.
Even without Telekinesis, Psychokinesis ought to get him airborne.
Meanwhile, the DNA Splicers in his hands were nearly fully reassembled. But staring at the special pyramid, Hikaru couldn’t help thinking of something more… entertaining.
“Meteorites. If I combine one with the Chasm’s cosmic energy and add shards of the Light Stone and Dark Stone… could I forge a Pseudo ‘Dragon Stone’?”
Just make the meteorite a carrier—a kind of “amplifier box.” Hikaru targeted a promising chunk, set to work, ground it with the Heart of the Giant, and after a while, a somewhat rough, hollowed sphere took shape. With gene-reconstruction craft, he set a Light Stone shard inside.
Call it Reshiram’s scale—or a feather, maybe, he mused.
Under the weaving of techniques and energies, the meteorite turned steadily… white.
[Craftwork: Light Stone · Faux.]
[Description: A pseudo-Light Stone crafted from a Light Stone shard, using meteorites and Star Pieces from Giant Chasm, made with the Heart-of-the-Giant and “Amplifier Box” processes. In essence it’s a meteorite amplifier and energy magnifier. It hastens and enhances Fire- and Dragon-type energies, gathers surrounding “life aura,” and serves as a tool for cultivation and training. It contains a small portion of Reshiram’s power.]
[Outwardly convincing enough to pass for the real thing. Combined with ancient craftsmanship, it can fool even professional antiquarians and historians.]
“Done!” Hikaru’s eyes lit up.
Heh. If he sold this down the line, Colress would be scratching his head raw.
Meteorites were valuable, though. Outside special places like Giant Chasm or Meteor Falls, they weren’t easy to find.
“Hey! You lot treating my lair like an amusement park?”
Kyurem stared at the free-for-all—Pokémon playing everywhere! Not that there weren’t serious ones: a low-profile big lion was quietly soaking in power and meditating.
See? It had wanted to say this for ages—couldn’t they be a little quieter? It glanced to Hikaru.
“DNA Splicers…”
“What—already finished?! So fast! Cobalion was absolutely right!”
Kyurem’s earlier annoyance evaporated the moment Hikaru held up the tool.
Good. That’s the one!
[Item: DNA Splicers.]
[Description: Said to be a pair of wedges that can fuse the once-united Kyurem and another Pokémon—or separate the fused Kyurem and that Pokémon back into their originals. It seems deeply tied to the Original Dragon. Whether the first Splicers were forged or formed naturally is unknown.]
[Effect: Unbind Kyurem’s sealed power!]
Kyurem fixed its gaze on the Splicers. The tool responded—leaping into the air. Forged already in a pyramidal shape, it didn’t need to transform.
The pyramidal wedge flew straight into Kyurem’s forehead—not as harm, but as integration. The golden plate on Kyurem’s brow popped out, becoming a new “dragon horn!”
The ice-frozen wings cracked open—the plug-like icicle vanes revealed their true nature!
Kyurem looked toward Reshiram.
After a brief, thoughtful pause, Reshiram nodded. With a blaze of searing light, she willingly reverted into the Light Stone.
Kyurem stepped forward. From its shattered ice-wings, a violet beam spilled out, and the Light Stone was swiftly absorbed! The hollow tail erupted with a bright, orange-red turbine of flame!
A vast energy flooded its body. With fire and frost roaring together, Kyurem completed its transformation!
“Now, I lack nothing!”
“Aren’t you still missing half?” Hikaru’s quip made Kyurem pause—then it shot back, huffy, “The other half will be back soon!”
“Mm. Done—White Kyurem!”
White Kyurem is Kyurem after it absorbs Reshiram—the upper body rises, standing bipedal; the left ice-spike becomes Reshiram-like fur, pupils appear in its eyes; the left forelimb becomes a Reshiram-like wing-arm while the right is an icy replica; the original wings tuck into the shoulders.
White fur spills across its chest and back; the tail’s ice block vanishes, now sheathing a Reshiram-like, heat-venting engine. It can wield fire and ice both!
Bzzt—
White Kyurem’s eyes widened briefly, then it turned as if seeing something:
“By gaining Reshiram’s power, I unexpectedly reclaimed a piece of the origin’s abilities.”
“To foresee the future and perceive the world’s fate… I’m only glimpsing a little, for now.”
“Ready yourselves for battle. Near the Abyssal Ruins, an enemy lurks in the dark.”
In the Mystery Dungeon world of Gates to Infinity, Kyurem who guards the Glacier Palace can indeed foresee the future and sense the world’s fate. In the mainline, Kyurem doesn’t have that gift—or else Plasma wouldn’t have nabbed it as a big living battery.
But now… things seemed different!
With a fierce blaze, Kyurem separated Reshiram once more. But having taken in part of her energy, it could now freely assume White Kyurem form.
We’d hit movie mode.
“Haa… thank you. You’ve been a great help. I leave the ancient knowledge in your care. Beyond meteorites, I’ve nothing else here to offer—take as many as you like.”
“…Oh, right. Go temper your will at the Ice Ruins. There’s something special there—a white plate imbued with peculiar power.”
“An ancient human king once collected many such plates, but never all. Long ago, someone from Lacunosa Town built a ruin for me. It’s a good place. I admired that one’s courage. He had a plate; it should still be there.”
“Head northwest from Giant Chasm. Near a great mountain, you’ll see the ruin.”
Hikaru stroked his chin.
“You mean the Nameless Ruins on Route 23, right?”
“Lacunosa also has a legend about you eating people—how a ferocious beast rode the cold wind, snatching humans and Pokémon and devouring them.”
“Eat people?” Kyurem mulled it over. “I remember that legend.”
“…’When the cold wind blows, humans and Pokémon disappear’—yes? Then tell me: who was the first dragon to appear in Giant Chasm? The dragon who came riding a meteorite?”
“The ancient king said this: to eat is to acquire life. And life is energy—absorption and conversion. That was not ‘predation’ in the sense they mean.”
“I don’t recall much more. But I think you already know the answer in your hearts.”
