Chapter 58: The Rampage of Shukaku
Within the hellish dimension of the Tsukuyomi, time was a meaningless, agonizing crawl. Ren’s form was a constant, a specter of pain that would materialize, deliver another searing wound with his katana, and then vanish, only to reappear and begin the process anew. Gaara’s screams, raw and ragged, echoed in the void. Between waves of torment, his mind, honed by a lifetime of isolation and pain, fought desperately for clarity.
*But… damn it… focus! This is an illusion… it has to be! There must be a way to break it…*
“It has only been one minute,” Ren’s voice cut through his thoughts, cold and precise as the blade he wielded. “Seventy-one hours, fifty-eight minutes, and fifty-nine seconds remain. Let’s see how long your spirit can endure.” The katana flashed again, and another wave of excruciating pain obliterated Gaara’s attempt to concentrate.
Time lost all meaning. After what felt like an eternity of suffering—thirty-six hours by Ren’s cruel count—Gaara’s body was a twitching, broken mess on the stone cross. His spirit, once iron-hard, was fraying at the edges.
“Not bad,” Ren’s voice held a note of mocking admiration. “Your endurance is beyond my expectations. Oh, by the way, your follower… Kankuro, was it? He’s in a space just like this one, enduring the exact same treatment.”
*Kankuro…* The thought of his brother suffering the same fate sent a fresh jolt of anguish through him. *Damn it! If this is an illusion, why can’t I break it? The pain is so real… but if it were real, I’d be dead a hundred times over by now.*
“Are you trying to decipher my Tsukuyomi?” Ren asked, as if reading his mind. He appeared directly in front of Gaara, his Mangekyo spinning slowly. “It is useless. In this space, all space, time, and sensation are subject to my will. Immense chakra, incredible speed… they mean nothing here. And no matter how long the torment lasts within, only an instant passes in the real world. No one can break a genjutsu in a single instant. That is why the Tsukuyomi is called… inescapable.”
“Bastard…” Gaara gasped, his body convulsing. “Such a terrible power…”
“Very good. Only thirty-six hours remain. Enjoy the rest of your stay.” Ren’s grin was a terrifying sight as he raised the blade once more.
When the final, agonizing second of the seventy-two hours finally bled away, the world dissolved. The grey void shattered, and the sensory overload of the real world—the heat of the sun, the grit of sand, the scent of dry pine—rushed back in.
The return was brutal. The psychological trauma of three days of unending torture crashing into a mind that had only experienced a single second was too much to bear. Kankuro, his mental defenses weaker, collapsed instantly, hitting the ground hard as he fell into unconsciousness.
Gaara managed to stay on his knees for a moment longer, his hands pressed into the dirt, his entire body trembling violently. He looked up, his eyes wide with a pain that was no longer physical but had scarred his very soul.
“Uchiha… Sasuke…” he rasped out, the name a curse. He tried to push himself up, to fight, but the weight of the phantom agony was too great. His arms gave way, and he pitched forward, joining his brother in unconsciousness.
“Lost consciousness already?” Ren mused, walking calmly towards Gaara’s prone form. “Now, let’s get what I came for.”
Just as he reached out a hand, the sand around Gaara’s body erupted into motion. It swarmed over him protectively, coalescing faster than the eye could follow, forming a massive, solid dome of tightly packed sand—a perfect defensive egg.
Then, a wave of malevolent, overwhelming chakra exploded outwards from the dome. The force of the blast was immense, tearing trees from their roots and sending a shockwave through the entire forest. The unconscious Kankuro was caught in the edge of the blast and sent tumbling away through the underbrush, his body coming to rest far from the epicenter.
As the dust settled, the sand dome began to shift and reshape itself. It grew, rising into the air, forming limbs, a torso, a tail, and a monstrous head. Half of Gaara’s body was visible, embedded within the forehead of the forming creature. A guttural, insane laugh echoed through the suddenly silent woods.
The One-Tail, Shukaku, was free.
“Finally,” Ren whispered, a thrill of excitement coursing through him. “It’s out.”
The massive tanuki-shaped beast, made entirely of sand, stretched its new limbs. “AHAHAHA~! GREAT! I’M FINALLY OUT! SO EXCITING! SO EXCITING!” it bellowed, its voice a grating, manic roar. Its single, wild eye scanned the area before locking onto Ren. “WAS IT YOU? DID YOU BRING ME OUT? I OWE YOU A THANK YOU! AS A REWARD, I’LL KILL YOU QUICKLY! HAHA!”
“Shut up,” Ren snapped, his patience thin. “You’re incredibly noisy.”
“WHAT?!” Shukaku’s manic joy instantly switched to blinding rage. “YOU DARE INSULT ME?! I’LL CRUSH YOU!”
The beast reared back, its bloated stomach compressing. “Wind Release: Air Bullets!” it roared, unleashing a rapid volley of compressed, hyper-velocity chakra spheres from its maw.
Ren’s body moved on instinct, the Sharingan already tracking the trajectories. He blurred into motion, weaving between the projectiles as they slammed into the ground around him, each impact cratering the earth and sending plumes of dirt and shattered wood into the air.
“AHAHA~~ YES! LIKE THAT! KILL HIM! KILL HIM!” Shukaku danced in place, thrilled by the destruction.
“Annoying beast,” Ren grumbled, creating distance. “Alright then. Let’s see how you handle a more… energetic opponent.” He bit his thumb, his hands flying through the familiar seals before slamming his palm onto the ground. “Summoning Jutsu!”
***BOOM!***
A massive cloud of white smoke erupted, and when it cleared, the enormous, spiky-furred form of Erha stood beside Ren, who landed neatly on its head. The giant summon blinked, looking around with a mix of confusion and excitement.
“WHAT? ANOTHER ONE? MORE TO KILL!” Shukaku shrieked, immediately firing another volley of Air Bullets at the new arrival.
“Whoa!” Erha yelped, its instincts taking over. It launched itself into the air with surprising agility, the Air Bullets screaming past underneath. It landed with a heavy thud that shook the ground. “Hey, pup! What’s the big idea? Who’s the ugly sand-critter?”
“That ‘ugly sand-critter’ is the One-Tailed Beast, Shukaku,” Ren explained, pointing. “I need your help dealing with it. It’s a bit loud.”
“Loud and rude!” Erha growled, its own temper flaring. It didn’t need to know the details. An attack was an attack. “Trying to blast me out of the sky? Nobody does that to me!”
With a roar of its own, Erha charged, its powerful legs eating up the distance with shocking speed. Shukaku continued to fire its Air Bullets, but Erha was a chaotic, unpredictable mover, dodging and weaving through the barrage.
“AHAHA~! PRACTICE AIR BULLETS!” Shukaku cackled, not even seeming to care that its attacks were missing.
Erha closed the distance in a final, powerful leap, its massive machete appearing in its hands. With a mighty swing, it cleaved clean through one of Shukaku’s arms. The sandy limb dissolved as it hit the ground, returning to inert granules.
But the victory was short-lived. At point-blank range, Shukaku managed to land a direct hit with a point-blank Air Bullet, smashing into Erha’s chest and sending the giant summon stumbling back with a grunt of pain.
“YEAH~! KILL THEM! KILL THEM!” Shukaku howled, its severed arm already beginning to reform from the surrounding sand.
“Hey! Erha! Are you alright? Don’t tell me you can’t handle a few hits!” Ren called down, nudging the summon’s head with his foot.
Erha rubbed its chest where the chakra blast had connected. “That stings like hell! I can’t take too many of those!” it admitted, but then a wild, battle-hungry grin spread across its muzzle. “But this is the most fun I’ve had in ages! HAHAHA!”
Gripping its machete tighter, Erha let out a booming bark and launched itself back into the fray, eager for round two against the manic Tailed Beast. The real battle had truly begun.
