Damon ascended the mansion’s stairs with calm steps, the wooden treads creaking softly under the controlled weight of his body as the warm light from the lanterns attached to the walls accompanied his way to the second floor. The upper hallway was silent, quieter than anywhere else on the property at that time of night, as if the entire house were slowly breathing after a day full of movement and conversation. He passed several closed doors, each leading to guest rooms or rarely used private rooms, until finally reaching the room that had been prepared for him.

Upon entering, Damon closed the door behind him with a simple movement and walked slowly through the interior of the room.
