Amidst this new world, Damon and Elizabeth traveled for an hour by carriage.

During the journey, the fog outside seemed to move as if it had a will of its own—sometimes thick as smoke, sometimes transparent as wet glass. The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable. It was dense, charged with something he couldn’t yet name.

Damon barely had time to blink. A metallic flash cut through the air.

An icy blade pressed against the side of his neck.

The sword emerged from a hidden compartment in the maid’s skirt—so fast, so clean, it felt like magic. But it wasn’t. It was precision.

Aria, still with the same restrained smile on her lips, stared at him now with eyes far less heavenly. They were still beautiful. But hard. Crystalline steel.

“Don’t move,” she said, her voice surgically soft. The blade didn’t tremble. “It’ll only hurt if you try to look innocent.”

Damon swallowed—or tried to. His throat was still blocked, the silence lingering like a tight collar.

She took a step closer, the blade now pressing lightly against his skin. Damon didn’t dare blink.

Aria then pointed with her chin, her gaze dropping to the top of his head.

And then back, where the torn skirt of the carriage revealed something else.

“Demon’s tail.”

Damon, confused, turned his head slightly, and that was when he felt it—something wiggling lightly, as if it had a life of its own.

A tail.

Black, thin, and tipped in the shape of an inverted heart.

His heart nearly stopped.

“Oh, yeah… I’m an incubus.” The realization fell like an old card forgotten in the machine.

As if it had always been there, just hidden behind the fog and shock.

Aria noticed his expression change, and finally pulled the blade away—but didn’t put it away. She simply twirled the sword in an elegant motion and rested it on her shoulder, like resting a fan.

“Good. You remember,” she said with a theatrical sigh. “That makes it a little easier. But understand one thing, creature: Countess Elizabeth is my reason for being. My oath is to her. My body, my soul, my blade.”

She took a step closer, her eyes now darker, more intense. The smile faded.

“If you hurt her. If you even think of betraying her trust…” the blade twirled between her fingers like a toy of death, “I will find out. And I will rip off every single one of those horns with my bare hands.”

She paused, took a deep breath, and then returned to her role as graceful servant, with an almost dancing curtsy.

“Now, come. It’s time to learn to walk among monsters without looking like food.”

Damon didn’t know if that was a threat… or a warning.
