Chapter 55: Chapter 54: The Night Shift
Time Remaining: 37 Days, 06 Hours. Location: The Rust Wastes (Sector 1: The Flatlands).
Night in the Rust Wastes wasn’t dark. It was orange.
The atmosphere was so thick with oxidized dust and suspended metal particles that the moonlight scattered, turning the sky into a bruised, glowing haze.
Inside the Iron Horse, it was loud, hot, and smelled like boiler fumes.
Arthur sat in the driver’s seat, his eyes glued to the track ahead. The high-beams (two massive spotlights salvaged from a lighthouse) cut through the dark, illuminating the rusted rails for about 200 meters.
Clack-clack. Clack-clack.
The rhythm was hypnotic. At 90 mph, the rails were a blur.
“Shift change,” Arthur announced, his voice raspy. He rubbed his eyes. “Zack, you’re on the wheel. Keep the pressure at 85%. If it hits 95%, vent the steam, or we lose the gasket.”
“Me?” Zack looked up from his map. He looked exhausted. “I don’t have a driving license, Arthur. I ride a bicycle.”
“It’s a train,” Arthur said, unbuckling his harness. “You don’t steer. You just manage the throttle and the brake. If you see a rock on the tracks, pull the ’Emergency Stop’. If you see a monster, wake Vivian.”
Zack scrambled into the driver’s seat, looking terrified as he gripped the heavy iron levers.
Arthur moved to the back of the cabin. “Living Quarters” was a generous term. It was the cramped space between the ammo hopper and the boiler.
Vivian was asleep on a pile of empty grain sacks, snoring, her hand still resting on her hammer. Julian was sitting on a crate, holding a silver fork and staring at an open tin can with profound sadness.
“What is this?” Julian asked, lifting a grey, gelatinous lump from the can.
“Military Ration #4,” Arthur said, grabbing a canteen. “Beef and… I think, potato? It has 2,000 calories. Eat it.”
Julian dropped the fork. “Arthur, I, personally, loaded a Stasis-Box onto this vehicle. It contained three pounds of smoked salmon, a wheel of aged cheddar, and four vacuum-sealed ribeye steaks. Where is my box?”
Arthur didn’t make eye contact. He opened a can of peaches. “I unplugged it.”
Julian froze. “You… what?”
“During the crab attack,” Arthur explained calmly. “The Rotary Cannon required 15% more power to spin the barrels at full speed. The Stasis-Box was drawing 15%. I rerouted the mana-circuit.”
“You killed the steaks?” Julian’s voice rose an octave. “You sacrificed a vintage cheddar for… bullets?”
“The bullets kept us alive,” Arthur said, eating a peach slice. “The cheese would have just made you sleepy. It was a tactical trade-off.”
“It was a war crime,” Julian muttered, poking the grey lump of ration beef. “I am going to bill you for emotional distress.”
“Noted,” Arthur said. “Eat your sludge. We need the energy.”
…..
“Arthur?” Zack’s voice wavered from the front.
Arthur dropped his wrench. “What is it? Engine trouble?”
“No,” Zack said, pointing at the dashboard. “The gauges. They’re arguing.”
Arthur walked over to the Navigation Console. It was a row of three analog dials.
The Barometer (Atmospheric Pressure):The needle was crashing.
Reading: Dropping from 30 inHg to 25 inHg.
Implication: A vacuum was forming. A massive storm front.
The Magnetic Compass (Direction): The needle was spinning wildly.
Reading: Erratic rotation.
Implication: The air was ionized. High electromagnetic interference.
The Ley-Meter (Ambient Magic): The needle was pegged at the maximum.
Reading: Critical Saturation.
“Is it a sandstorm?” Zack asked, watching the barometer fall.
“No,” Arthur shook his head. “A sandstorm drops pressure, but it doesn’t magnetize the air.”
“Is it a monster?” Julian asked, looking at the Ley-Meter. “A Kaiju?”
“No,” Arthur tapped the compass. “A monster radiates mana, but it doesn’t create a four-inch vacuum in the atmosphere. Biology can’t do that.”
Arthur stepped back, putting the three data points together. “Low pressure. Ionized air. Critical mana saturation.”
He looked out the windshield. The orange haze in the sky had changed. The clouds weren’t drifting anymore. They were boiling. A massive, swirling vortex of purple light was forming in the rearview mirror, sucking the dust into the sky.
“Physics and Magic are colliding,” Arthur concluded. “It’s a Mana Storm.”
“Distance?” Arthur barked, jumping back into the driver’s seat. “Zack, move! I need the wheel!”
Zack scrambled out. Arthur grabbed the controls. The wheel felt heavy, fighting him.
“Five miles back,” Julian yelled, looking at the rear periscope. The glass screen was just a wall of purple static. “It’s eating the tracks!”
“It’s faster than us,” Zack checked the speed. “It’s moving at 100 mph. It’s chasing the low-pressure wake of the train.”
“Arthur,” Vivian warned, pointing at the engine readout. “The Core!”
Arthur looked. The Thunder-Lizard Core was pulsing in sync with the storm outside. “Resonance,” Arthur cursed. “The storm is pulling at the Core. If it gets closer, the containment field will shatter. The engine will detonate.”
“So we drive faster?” Vivian asked, buckling in.
“We can’t,” Arthur pointed at the temp gauge. “We’re at redline. If I push it to 100 mph, we melt the pistons.”
He grabbed the map. He scanned the route ahead. “There!” Arthur pointed. “Three miles up. A tunnel. The ’Serpent’s Throat’. If we get inside, the mountain rock will shield the Core from the resonance.”
“Three miles,” Julian calculated. “The storm will hit us in two minutes.”
“Then we have to get there in one minute,” Arthur said.
He reached for a red lever covered in “DANGER” tape. [Mana Overdrive]
“Arthur,” Zack warned. “You haven’t tested the overdrive. The math says there is a 40% chance the boiler cracks.”
“Better than a 100% chance of being vaporized,” Arthur gritted his teeth. “Hold on to something bolted down.”
He pulled the lever.
