Chapter 280: The Speed of Mirrors
Chapter 280: The Speed of Mirrors
A glancing contact—the reflected streak catching her left arm at reduced force as she moved, the concussive burst hitting the outside of her forearm and snapping her arm sideways mid-stride. She absorbed it without stopping—stumbled slightly, adjusted, kept moving—but the crowd had seen it and responded with the full-body noise of people watching something land.
The Solmara sections came alive for the first time in the fight—sharp and focused, giving Eldrin the acknowledgment of a reflected strike finding its target. The Virex sections answered immediately, not to be outdone, pushing volume back at the floor.
The announcer said nothing for a moment.
Just watched.
Then—
“First blood to Eldrin,” he said quietly. “A reflected streak finds Azula on the move.” He paused. “And Azula doesn’t stop.”
She didn’t stop.
That was the thing about Azula that the crowd was beginning to understand—not intellectually, the announcer had told them she chained streaks without pausing, but in the felt sense that came from watching it happen. There was no reset between firings. No moment where she gathered herself or checked whether the last one had landed or adjusted her plan before continuing. The chain was continuous, the rhythm unbroken, and the glancing contact from Eldrin’s reflection had been absorbed into the rhythm rather than interrupting it—a cost paid and filed and moved past without ceremony.
She came in closer.
Not all the way to close range—halfway, inside the distance where the streaks had room to fully accelerate before contact but close enough that Eldrin’s reaction window was shorter. At range the streaks took long enough to cross the floor that Eldrin could read the angle and harden the right surface. Closer—the fraction of a second available to her was smaller. The transition speed that had looked extraordinary from range would be tested differently here.
Azula fired from the closer distance.
Right hand. Single streak. Center chest.
Eldrin hardened the chest.
Reflected it.
Left hand. Single streak. Right shoulder.
Eldrin transitioned. Hardened the shoulder.
Reflected it.
Both hands. Two streaks. Left hip and right knee simultaneously.
Eldrin split her hardening—left hip and right knee activating together, Mirror Skin covering two separated points on her body at the same time.
Both reflected.
The crowd produced a sustained sound at the simultaneous reflection—not a spike but a rolling noise that didn’t drop between beats, the fight moving fast enough that reactions were overlapping rather than arriving individually.
“She can cover two points simultaneously,” the announcer said. “That’s not a given—splitting the hardening across separated locations costs more than covering adjacent surfaces. Eldrin is doing it without apparent strain.” A pause. “Which means Azula needs more than two angles at once.”
Azula heard the implicit challenge in that even without the announcer saying it.
She fired three.
Right hand, left hand, right foot—three streaks from three separate origin points aimed at three separated targets simultaneously. Chest, left knee, right shoulder.
Eldrin hardened two of them.
Chest and left knee—both surfaces going reflective in time, both streaks reflecting back. The third streak—aimed at the right shoulder—hit before the hardening reached it. A fraction of a second late. The Mirror Skin activating as the streak arrived rather than before it.
The streak hit.
Partial reflection—the surface had begun to harden when the contact came, not fully reflective, not fully soft. The concussive burst detonated against a half-hardened surface and the result was something between a full reflection and a direct hit—part of the force bouncing back, part of it landing.
Eldrin’s right shoulder took it.
She moved with the impact—a step to the left, weight shifting, the shoulder dropping slightly as the partial-reflected burst transferred its remaining force into her body. Not a clean hit. Not a clean reflection. Something in between that satisfied neither outcome fully.
The crowd reacted to the ambiguity of it—a murmur rather than a surge, people processing what they had seen and not being entirely sure which fighter it had favored.
“Three angles,” the announcer said. “Eldrin covers two cleanly. The third—a partial. The shoulder takes something.” He paused. “At two simultaneous she’s perfect. At three she’s making decisions about priority. And Azula—” a pause, “Azula just found the number.”
Eldrin adjusted.
She had been standing in the same position since the fight began—letting Azula move, letting her probe, reading the rhythm from a fixed point. Now she moved. Not toward Azula—sideways, a lateral step that changed the angle of her profile to Azula’s firing position, presenting a narrower surface. Reducing the number of separated targets available simultaneously.
Smart.
Azula adjusted to the adjustment.
She circled in the opposite direction—moving to restore the angle, keeping Eldrin’s full profile available. Eldrin moved again. Azula followed. They began circling each other across the arena floor, a slow orbit that looked almost choreographed from the upper tiers, both fighters moving in response to each other without closing distance.
The Virex sections were fully on their feet now.
The Solmara sections matched them.
Azula broke the orbit.
She accelerated—not toward Eldrin, across the floor, a wide fast arc that changed her angle dramatically in a single second and fired three streaks from the new position before Eldrin had finished tracking the movement. Right hand, left hand, right foot—same combination as before, new angles, the targets different on Eldrin’s body because the firing position was different.
Eldrin hardened two.
The third—right foot streak, aimed low, coming from a downward angle that the circling had created—hit the outside of Eldrin’s left knee before the hardening arrived.
Full contact.
The concussive burst hit the knee joint clean and Eldrin’s leg buckled sideways—not a collapse, not a fall, a sharp involuntary bend that broke her stance and dropped her weight to one side. She caught herself. Straightened. But the knee had taken a real hit and the crowd had seen it and the Virex sections gave Azula a surge of noise that shook the upper tiers.
“THE KNEE!” the announcer called. “Clean contact—full force, no reflection—Azula finds the gap with the angle change and the streak gets there first!”
Eldrin stood on the affected knee and tested it—a small weight transfer, checking the response. It held. But the way she was standing had shifted slightly, the natural easy distribution of weight she had carried through the opening exchanges replaced by something more careful on the left side.
Azula saw it.
She filed it.
And kept moving.
