More likely, the old man pretended to be swayed by the land division, but once he returned to Karhold, he would immediately complain to Robb Stark that the Night’s Watch had seized the Umbers’ castle with ill intent.

The seeds of conflict were sown, and the plan to have the North continue supplying Dragonglass and saltpeter would likely become difficult.
