Chapter 131: Elena’s and Alisha’s Father
Chapter 131: Elena’s and Alisha’s Father
After watching Cindy and Christopher’s reconciliation and Cindy’s unexpected kiss, I made my way through the Municipal Office compound.
As I rounded the corner near the main courtyard area, I spotted Elena working alongside Margaret, both women focused on organizing and packing supplies that had apparently been brought in by one of Martin’s recent scavenging expeditions. Several wooden crates and cardboard boxes were arranged around them, filled with various items that would be valuable for community operations.
Elena was sorting through medical supplies. Margaret was handling the more general supplies—tools, hardware, clothing, and other miscellaneous items that scavenging teams typically brought back from abandoned buildings and businesses.
“How’s the inventory process going?” I asked as I approached them.
“Quite well, actually,” Margaret replied with a smile. “Martin’s team has been particularly successful lately. They’ve developed an efficient system for identifying and accessing previously overlooked locations.”
Elena looked up from her work. “They are quite lucky aren’t they?” She said smiling.
Margaret paused in her sorting to look at Elena with obvious curiosity. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but where is your sister Alisha today? I noticed she didn’t come along with your group this time or more often anymore.”
“She decided to stay behind at the house,” Elena replied. “Someone needed to maintain security, and she volunteered to handle that responsibility since Rachel came with us.”
Margaret chuckled softly suddenly. “You have quite an interesting accent, my dear. Russian, if I’m not mistaken?”
Elena’s cheeks flushed slightly, clearly self-conscious about her linguistic background being so easily identifiable. “Yes, I am Russian originally,” she admitted. “My sister and I came to America when we were ten years old.”
“That must have been quite an adjustment for someone so young,” Margaret said with genuine sympathy. “What brought your family to America?”
Elena became noticeably more awkward, her hands fidgeting with the medical supplies as she clearly struggled with how much personal information to share. “My father thought we would have better opportunities in America,” she said carefully. “He wanted Alya and me to graduate from a prestigious school, so he enrolled us at Lexington Charter, a private academy with an excellent academic reputation.”
Margaret nodded with understanding, apparently satisfied with the explanation and sensitive enough not to press for more details when Elena’s discomfort was obvious. “Education is certainly important, especially for young people with your obvious intelligence and capabilities.”
The conversation might have continued, but Margaret was clearly preparing to lift one of the heavier boxes that had been packed with supplies. Before she could attempt the potentially difficult task, Elena quickly intervened.
“It’s okay, let me handle that,” Elena said, smoothly taking the box from Margaret’s arms before the older woman could strain herself. “These supplies are quite heavy, and I don’t want you to hurt yourself unnecessarily.”
“Thank you, dear,” Margaret replied with obvious gratitude. “The years are catching up with me more than I’d like to admit.”
I approached them and hefted another of the packed boxes. “Just tell us where you want these delivered, and we’ll take care of the heavy lifting.”
Margaret pointed toward the Municipal Office’s main building. “Second floor, in the storage room near the elevator. That’s where we keep most of our organized supplies for easy access and distribution.”
Elena and I began walking toward the building together, each carrying a box of carefully sorted supplies. The weight wasn’t particularly challenging for either of us, given our enhanced physical capabilities obviously.
As we made our way through the building’s corridors, I found myself thinking about Elena’s obvious discomfort when discussing her family background.
“Do you want me to carry your box as well?” I asked her.
Elena rolled her eyes. “I can carry it myself perfectly well,” she replied. “You don’t need to treat me like I’m fragile.”
We continued walking in comfortable silence for a few moments before I decided to address the topic that had been nagging at me for a long time now.
“Was what you told Margaret about why your father sent you to America really the complete truth?” I asked hesitantly, not wanting to pry but sensing that there might be more to the story than Elena was comfortable sharing publicly.
Elena’s step faltered slightly, and I could see her internal struggle as she decided how much to reveal. Finally, she sighed with the resignation of someone who was tired of carrying secrets alone.
“My father holds a very dangerous position in Russia,” she said carefully, her voice dropping to ensure our conversation remained private. “Alisha and I weren’t safe living with him, so he sent us to America where we could have normal lives and get a quality education without being constantly at risk.”
“What kind of dangerous position?” I pressed gently, though I was beginning to suspect I already knew the answer.
Elena averted her gaze, clearly uncomfortable with the direction our conversation was taking. “He’s… let’s just say he’s like the boss of certain business organizations that operate outside normal legal frameworks,” she said in the most roundabout way possible.
The euphemistic phrasing told me everything I needed to know. I stopped walking for a moment, processing the implications of what she’d just revealed, before resuming our path toward the storage room.
Elena noticed my reaction and her expression became even more complicated, mixing embarrassment with defensive concern about how I might judge her family situation.
“I don’t know very much about the specifics of my father’s work,” she continued quickly. “Alisha was always the one who knew more and communicated directly with him about business matters. She purposefully kept me out of those discussions to protect me from knowledge that might put me at risk or maybe she didn’t want me to know anything about my father’s work.
“That’s why Alisha hid the satellite communication device,” I said, understanding dawning. “She didn’t want to return to that world, but she also felt responsible for keeping you safe.”
Elena nodded. “Alisha is worrying about me enough to be willing to go back to our father’s world because she knows how dangerous things have become here with the infected and the alien threats. She thinks he can protect us better than we can protect ourselves.”
“And what do you think?” I asked, though I suspected I already knew her feelings on the matter.
Elena’s voice became quieter, more vulnerable than I’d heard it before. “I don’t want to leave,” she said simply. “I feel more at home in our house, with our survival family, than I ever felt in my father’s palace-like mansion in Russia….”
I remained silent, sensing that she had more to say and not wanting to interrupt the flow of her thoughts.
We reached the storage room, which was actually a converted office space that had been cleared of furniture and equipped with metal shelving units for organized supply storage. Elena moved toward a section that appeared to be designated for medical supplies, but as she tried to place her box on a high shelf above other containers, the weight distribution became unstable.
I saw the problem developing before Elena realized the danger. The boxes she was trying to stack on were not properly aligned, and the additional weight was causing the entire arrangement to shift toward collapse.
“Elena, watch out!” I called, dropping my own box and moving quickly to intervene.
But it was too late to prevent the cascade entirely. The boxes began tumbling from their precarious positions, and Elena lost her balance trying to avoid the falling containers. I reached her just as she was falling backward, wrapping my arms around her protectively and using my own body to shield her from the impact of the falling supplies.
We both went down together, with me taking the brunt of the collision as multiple boxes struck my back and head before scattering their contents across the storage room floor. The pain was quite sharp, particularly where one of the heavier containers had caught me directly at the base of my skull.
After the chaos settled and the dust cleared, Elena began coughing slightly from the debris that had been stirred up by the impact. She immediately began panicking about my condition.
“Oh my God, Ryan, are you okay?” She asked frantically, her hands moving to check for injuries. “Please tell me you’re not seriously hurt.”
“I’m fine,” I said, though I could feel warmth trickling down the back of my neck that was probably blood from where one of the boxes had caught me. “More importantly, are you safe and uninjured?”
Elena was clearly not satisfied with my assessment. She was on her knees beside me, her hands gently examining my head where I’d been struck, and I could see her expression change when her fingers encountered blood.
“You’re bleeding,” she said with obvious distress. “This could be a serious head injury. We need to get you medical attention immediately.”
I sat up carefully, feeling the pain in my back and head but knowing from experience that my enhanced healing abilities would handle the damage relatively quickly. “It’s fine, Elena. I have a strong body thanks to the Dullahan Symbiotic. The most important thing is that you’re safe and sound.”
Elena fell silent, looking at me with an expression that was difficult to interpret. Her lips were pressed together tightly, as if she was fighting some internal battle, and I could see tears beginning to form in her eyes.
Suddenly, she leaned forward and kissed me. When she pulled back, her eyes were definitely tearing up.
“I don’t want to leave our house,” she said, her voice breaking slightly with the intensity of her feelings. “I don’t want to leave you. I love you, Ryan. I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone in my entire life.”
“More than Alisha?” When I asked her back, she glared at me.
I laughed softly but bitterly.
“I don’t want you to leave either,” I said honestly. “But it would be selfish of me to ask you to stay when I can’t guarantee that I can protect you better than your father could against the alien threats we’re facing.”
“I don’t care about guarantees,” Elena replied. “I don’t care about safety or protection or any of the practical considerations. I care about being with the people I love, living the life I choose rather than the life that other people think would be best for me.”
“Elena,” I said gently, reaching up to touch her cheek with trembling fingers, “regardless of who your father may be, at the very least he clearly loves you and wants to keep you safe. Alisha loves you deeply and is willing to sacrifice her own happiness to ensure your wellbeing. They’re not wrong to be concerned about the dangers we’re facing.”
I stood up slowly as I spoke. No matter how desperately I wanted to keep Elena by my side, when I thought about the Electrical Infected that had nearly killed me, or that massive enhanced creature I’d encountered at the radio station, fear gripped my chest like an icy hand.
If Elena or any of the others ended up confronting such monsters… they wouldn’t survive it. I was certain of that fact, and the knowledge tormented me.
Elena rose to her feet as well, her blue eyes never leaving my face. I glanced around at the chaos we’d created in the storage room—scattered supplies, overturned boxes, debris covering the floor—but before I could begin addressing the mess, Elena grasped my arm firmly, forcing me to turn back toward her.
“What do you want?” she asked quietly as she lowered her gaze. “Tell me honestly what you truly want, Ryan.”
“I already told you—” I began, but she cut me off with renewed intensity.
“I’m asking you again,” she insisted, her grip on my arm tightening. “Not what you think is best for me, not what’s practical or safe. What do you want?”
I felt my throat constrict with emotion as I struggled to find the right words. “Elena… I have to tell you something important first. Rachel and Sydney have become my girlfriends,” I managed to say, despite how awkward and embarrassing the admission felt.
Elena’s eyes widened slightly, surprise flickering across her features, but she remained silent, waiting for me to continue.
“They’ve both accepted the unconventional nature of our relationship,” I continued, my words tumbling out in a rush, “but I don’t know how you feel about that kind of arrangement. I don’t want to pursue anything serious with you while hiding the truth from everyone involved, so—”
“I want that too,” Elena cut me off.
“W..what?” I stared at her, certain I’d misheard.
She looked at me directly, her cheeks flushed but her expression completely serious. “I don’t care about conventional relationship structures. I just want to be with you, whatever form that takes.”
“Elena?” I was genuinely surprised by how readily she’d accepted such a complex situation.
“What about you?” she asked, stepping closer to me.
As she moved forward, I found myself stepping backward instinctively, but the scattered supplies on the floor made me stumble slightly. My back pressed against one of the metal shelving units, the cool surface contrasting sharply with the heat building between us.
“What are you asking me?” I said, though my voice came out rougher than I’d intended.
Elena looked up at me, her face burning with embarrassment but her eyes blazing with visible desire. “I want you completely,” she whispered. “What about me? Don’t you want me always by your side, or did I misunderstand what this all meant—”
Before she could finish expressing her doubts, I leaned down and kissed her lips with all the passion and longing I’d been suppressing for weeks.
Elena’s blue eyes widened in surprise for just a moment before she melted into the kiss, responding with equal fervor. Her hand reached up to rest against my chest, and I could feel my heartbeat hammering against her palm.
“I want you,” I said when we finally parted, our lips glistening and our breathing heavy. “I want you more than I can properly express.”
Elena gazed up at me.
“T…Then take me.”
