Chapter 139: The Scream [4]
In the Municipal Office building, half an hour had passed since Ryan and Jasmine had disappeared into the darkness beyond the carefully constructed defensive perimeter. The night had settled into the comfortable routine that the community had grown accustomed to over the last weeks or rather successful survival—a routine built on confidence, preparation, and the reassuring presence of multiple layers of protection.
The building itself hummed with the quiet sounds of a sleeping community: soft breathing from converted office rooms that served as bedrooms, the gentle rustle of bedding as people shifted in their sleep, and the occasional creak of old building infrastructure adjusting to temperature changes. These were the sounds of safety, the audio backdrop of people who could sleep peacefully because they trusted in the defenses that surrounded them.
Since Martin and Mark had completed the installation of the electrical grid system around the Municipal Office compound, nighttime security had become almost automatic. The sophisticated defensive network they’d constructed was a masterpiece of post-apocalyptic engineering, designed to handle any threat that might emerge from the infected-infested landscape surrounding their community.
The outermost defensive ring consisted of hundreds of wooden spikes planted in carefully calculated patterns across the approach routes to their building. These weren’t crude stakes driven randomly into the ground, but precision-engineered obstacles positioned at heights and angles that would impale any infected creature attempting to reach their perimeter. The spikes formed concentric rings of deadly barriers, each one designed to slow, wound, or kill attackers before they could reach the more sophisticated defenses closer to the building.
Beyond the spike fields lay the electrical grid itself—Mark’s crowning achievement in defensive technology. The system consisted of electrified cables running at precisely calculated heights and spacing, powered by a combination of solar panels and backup generators that ensured continuous operation regardless of weather conditions. The electrical current wasn’t strong enough to kill humans instantly, but it delivered debilitating shocks that would incapacitate infected creatures and alert the community to any breach attempts.
Inside this double layer of passive defenses, the Municipal Office building had been further fortified with reinforced barriers and emergency escape routes that could handle any conceivable threat scenario. The windows had been reinforced with metal grating, the entrances secured with multiple locks and barricades, and strategic supplies cached throughout the building.
In the weeks since the system’s completion, ordinary infected had rarely even reached the electrical grid. Most were stopped by the spike fields, their bodies impaled on the wooden barriers before they could pose any real threat to the community beyond. On the rare occasions when infected did trigger the electrical defenses, they were typically incapacitated immediately and could be dealt with safely by armed community members during daylight hours.
The confidence this defensive success had generated throughout their community was clear. People slept better, worked more efficiently, and planned for the future with optimism that would have been impossible in the early days of their survival situation. Children played in the courtyards without constant supervision, adults pursued projects beyond simple survival, and the overall atmosphere was one of rebuilding rather than mere endurance.
Only the Fire Spitter incident had seriously tested their defenses, and even that had been handled successfully. Ryan and Rachel’s elimination of the creature had reinforced the community’s belief that their defensive measures were adequate for any threat they might face. The Fire Spitter had been an anomaly—a single, unusually powerful infected creature that had somehow acquired devastating capabilities—but it had been destroyed, and nothing similar had appeared since.
The prevailing theory among the community leadership was that the Fire Spitter had been some kind of weapon or tool deployed by hostile human survivors—perhaps a group with access to military technology or experimental biological weapons. Since the creature’s destruction, they’d seen no evidence of such enemies, leading most people to conclude that the threat had been eliminated along with its primary weapon.
This interpretation made sense from their limited perspective. They had no knowledge of alien intelligences, enhanced infected creatures, or the sophisticated technology that was actually responsible for the threats they’d encountered. In their understanding, the post-apocalyptic world contained only normal infected, desperate human survivors, and the occasional military remnant or scientific experiment gone wrong.
That was why none of them could have anticipated what was about to happen.
The sound that shattered their peaceful night was unlike anything their defensive systems had been designed to handle. It wasn’t the usual moaning of wandering infected or the soft electrical crackling of their grid disposing of intruders. It was a tremendous metallic crash, as if something with enormous force had struck their most sophisticated barriers and simply smashed through them like they were made of tissue paper.
The impact was so powerful that it shook the entire building, rattling windows and causing dishes to fall from shelves in the makeshift kitchens. The sound echoed across the compound with the finality of a death knell, carrying implications that their sense of security had just been shattered along with their defenses.
Martin jerked awake in his converted office bedroom.
“What was that?” His wife Linda asked from beside him, her voice trembling with fear.
“Stay here and keep quiet,” Martin replied, already pulling on clothes and reaching for the handgun he kept within easy reach of their bed. His mind was racing through possibilities—had part of their electrical system overloaded and exploded? Had some kind of vehicle crashed into their perimeter? Had a large group of infected somehow assaulted on their defenses?
None of the scenarios he could imagine were good, but some were far worse than others.
Martin stepped into the corridor outside his room and immediately saw other community members emerging from their sleeping quarters with expressions of alarm and confusion. Everyone had been awakened by the tremendous crash, and the building was filling with the sounds of people gathering weapons, checking on family members, and trying to understand what kind of emergency they were facing.
“Something’s happened outside,” Martin said to the growing crowd. “Everyone needs to arm themselves and be ready for anything.”
The group that followed him outside included some of their most experienced fighters and most level-headed community members. Christopher was among them, moving as one of the leaders of the community. Others brought flashlights, weapons likes.
But nothing could have prepared them for what they found when they reached their main observation post.
The electrical grid system that had protected them so effectively for weeks was completely destroyed. The carefully positioned cables lay twisted and broken across the ground, some still sparking weakly from residual electrical charge, others completely severed and dark. The metal posts that had supported the grid were bent at impossible angles, some completely uprooted from their concrete foundations.
Behind the ruined electrical system, the barricade of abandoned vehicles that had formed their secondary defensive line was in even worse condition. Cars and trucks that had been positioned to create interlocking fields of fire and impenetrable barriers had been scattered like toys, some thrown completely clear of their original positions, others crushed into unrecognizable heaps of twisted metal.
The destruction was so complete and so precise that it defied explanation through any normal post-apocalyptic threat scenario they’d encountered. No group of infected, no matter how large or determined, could have accomplished such systematic demolition of their defenses. No human enemy with conventional weapons could have generated the kind of force necessary to move multi-ton vehicles and tear through reinforced electrical installations.
Christopher stood at the edge of the observation post, staring in shocked disbelief at the scene of devastation that stretched before them. The carefully planned defensive network that had given their community such confidence was now nothing more than scattered debris, and through the gaps in their ruined barriers, infected creatures were already beginning to appear in alarming numbers.
But it wasn’t the ordinary infected that made Christopher’s blood freeze with terror. Moving through the darkness beyond their destroyed defenses was something far larger and more threatening than any creature they’d ever encountered.
The shape was roughly humanoid but significantly larger than any normal person—perhaps eight or nine feet tall, with proportions that spoke to enhanced muscle mass and supernatural strength. Its skin had the same pale, translucent quality they’d observed in some infected, and even at a distance, Christopher could see the dark veins pulsing beneath its surface like some kind of alien circulatory system.
As the creature moved closer to their position, Christopher realized with growing horror that it wasn’t just passively approaching their building. It was actively gathering weapons from their own destroyed defenses, collecting the wooden spikes that had been designed to protect them and repurposing them for its own offensive use.
“What the hell is that thing?” One of Martin’s men whispered, his voice barely audible over the sound of approaching infected creatures.
Before anyone could answer, the enormous infected demonstrated exactly what it was capable of. With smooth motion, it hefted one of their defensive spikes—a piece of sharpened wood nearly six feet long and designed to impale charging infected—and launched it toward them.
The spike flew through the air like a javelin thrown by someone with superhuman strength, covering the distance between the creature and their position in less than a second. It struck one of the community members directly in the chest, piercing through his body with such force that the pointed tip emerged from his back, covered in blood and tissue.
The man died instantly, his body jerking backward from the impact before collapsing to the ground with blood spreading rapidly across his shirt. The casual efficiency of the attack was almost as terrifying as its lethality—the enhanced infected had used their own defensive weapons against them with precision that suggested intelligence far beyond anything they’d seen from normal infected creatures.
At least for anyone except Christopher who had met the Frost Walker.
Blood spattered across Christopher’s face and clothing as he stared in shock at what had just happened. The man who’d been standing beside him moments earlier was now dead.
Christopher’s gaze snapped back to the enhanced infected, which had already bent down to retrieve another spike from the debris scattered around their destroyed defensive perimeter. Through the beams of flashlights that community members were pointing toward the threat, he could make out more details of the creature’s appearance that made his stomach clench with terror.
This wasn’t just a larger, stronger version of the ordinary infected they’d learned to handle. It was something fundamentally different and stronger.
Behind the enhanced infected, more standard infected creatures were streaming through the gaps in their destroyed defenses, drawn by the sounds of destruction and the scent of human prey. But these ordinary infected seemed almost secondary to the real threat posed by the enhanced creature.
