Carrying the bag, Isla Prescott went out into the hallway and dialed Shane Sterling’s number.

Shane Sterling answered quickly. There was no small talk, just a single sentence tinged with faint resentment: “You finally called me.”

Isla Prescott saw the reflection of her trembling eyelashes in the mirrored wall, like a dying butterfly in the afternoon sun.

Her gaze pierced through the window and looked down, where she saw Shane Sterling standing beside his car.

He was dressed in all black, as if steeped in the night itself.

“I’m coming down now,” Isla Prescott said.

“Don’t. I have to go.”

“Can’t you just wait for two minutes?”

“I can’t.” He tapped the face of his watch. “I have a flight to catch.”

As soon as he finished speaking, Shane Sterling got right into his car.

The car started slowly, pulling away from the lounge’s entrance and merging into traffic.

Isla Prescott watched Shane Sterling’s car leave, knowing she wouldn’t have a chance to return the bracelet to him today. Just as she was about to hang up, Shane Sterling suddenly said, “Wait.”

“Is there something else?”

“Something very important. Happy birthday.”
