Chapter 144: Chapter 131: Girlfriend
Levi Quinn left, leaving only Annabelle Leighton and Morgan Hayes in the hospital room.
Morgan Hayes looked visibly tense.
“What’s wrong? Afraid I’ll take advantage of you while you’re injured?” Annabelle Leighton sat on the edge of Morgan Hayes’s hospital bed, resting her chin in her hand as she watched him. “Relax. As much as I want to sleep with you, I’m not enough of an animal to prey on a patient.”
Morgan Hayes had grown immune to her lack of a filter. He said calmly to Annabelle Leighton, “I’m fine now. You can go home.”
“Fine?” Annabelle Leighton pointed at the floor. “If you’re so fine, then get up and take a few steps.”
“The caregiver will be here soon.”
“But he’s not here yet, is he? I promised Officer Quinn I’d take care of you, and I can’t go back on my word.” Annabelle Leighton gave Morgan Hayes a bold smile. “Before the caregiver arrives, if you need to use the restroom or anything, don’t be embarrassed. I can help you.”
Morgan Hayes’s face instantly flushed. “I don’t need to go.”
“Alright, then just get some rest.”
Seeing that she wouldn’t leave, Morgan Hayes said no more, closing his eyes and pretending to sleep.
The hospital room fell completely silent.
Annabelle Leighton was starting to feel tired herself. She rested her arms on the edge of Morgan Hayes’s bed, laid her head down, and eventually drifted off to sleep.
Half an hour later, the caregiver arranged by the Brieridge Police Station arrived. As soon as he walked in, he saw Morgan Hayes in bed, gazing down tenderly at the woman who was fast asleep, resting by his bedside.
“Officer Hayes, hello.” The caregiver greeted Morgan Hayes in a low voice before introducing himself. “My name is Adler. I’m a local caregiver, and I’ll be looking after you for the next few days.”
“Thank you, Uncle Adler.”
“It’s my duty, of course.” Uncle Adler glanced at Annabelle Leighton, who was sleeping soundly, and asked with a smile, “Is this young lady your girlfriend? She must have been worried sick when you got hurt.”
Morgan Hayes didn’t correct him, only saying, “Uncle Adler, could you please cover her with that small blanket on the bed? It gets chilly at night, and she might catch a cold sleeping like this.”
“Of course.”
Uncle Adler took the small blanket and draped it over Annabelle Leighton.
Annabelle Leighton shifted in her sleep, but she didn’t wake up.
That night, Morgan Hayes was in too much pain to sleep, while Annabelle Leighton slept soundly by his side.
Just before dawn, Annabelle Leighton woke up. Opening her eyes, she saw Morgan Hayes lying there with his eyes closed and assumed he was asleep. She stood up quietly and reached out to feel his forehead.
The doctor had said that if the wound became infected, Morgan Hayes might develop a fever, and Annabelle had been worried about it.
Thankfully, his temperature was normal.
Just as Annabelle Leighton was about to pull her hand back, Morgan Hayes opened his eyes.
“Oh, sorry. Did I wake you?” Annabelle Leighton asked apologetically.
“I wasn’t asleep.”
“Why couldn’t you sleep? Is it because of the pain?”
“Your snoring was too loud.”
Annabelle Leighton froze. “Impossible. I never snore.”
“How would you know you don’t snore?”
“My college roommates never said I snored.”
“How many years has it been since you graduated?”
Annabelle Leighton thought for a moment. “Well, my grandma never said I snore, either.”
“What? You’re a grown woman and you still sleep with your grandma?”
“What’s wrong with sleeping with my grandma? When she was sick in the hospital, I often stayed with her.”
Hearing this, Morgan Hayes’s heart softened.
’No wonder she could sleep so soundly, even slumped over the side of the bed,’ he thought. ’She must be used to it.’
“Did I really snore?” Annabelle Leighton was very conscious of her image; after all, this was their first time “sleeping” together.
“No, I was just kidding.”
Annabelle Leighton let out a sigh of relief, but then she realized something. “So you couldn’t sleep because of the pain, right?”
Morgan Hayes shook his head. “It’s nothing.”
“’It’s nothing, it’s nothing.’ You always say that. What’s so wrong with admitting it hurts?” Annabelle Leighton grabbed his hand. “If you’re in pain, you should just say it.”
Perhaps because she’d gotten cold while she slept, her hand lacked warmth. The cool sensation seeped into Morgan Hayes’s palm, leaving him feeling flustered.
Growing up, he had always been taught to “be brave.” Annabelle Leighton was the first person to ever tell him that it was okay to admit when he was in pain.
