Annabelle Leighton put all her work on hold and stayed with Morgan Hayes in Brieridge for ten days.

Isla Prescott was baffled. What on earth had happened to make Annabelle stay away for so long? Her worries were finally put to rest when Annabelle sent her a picture of Morgan Hayes.

Ten days later, Morgan Hayes was discharged from the hospital.

The Brieridge Police Station arranged for a car to take Morgan Hayes back to Meritopia, and Annabelle Leighton returned with him.

With ten days of work piled up at the studio, Annabelle Leighton went straight into overtime mode the moment she got back. But no matter how late she worked, she texted Morgan Hayes every day to check on his recovery.

Morgan Hayes would reply to her texts, but he never initiated contact himself.

Annabelle Leighton didn’t mind, though. After all, he hadn’t even replied to her texts before.

After working around the clock for a week, she finally completed all her urgent projects. Annabelle Leighton decided to pay Morgan Hayes a visit at his home.

Before heading to Morgan Hayes’s place, Annabelle Leighton stopped by a flower shop to buy a bouquet of flowers.

After parking her car, she gave Morgan Hayes a call, but he didn’t pick up. Just as Annabelle was about to get out, she saw him coming downstairs from one of the apartment buildings with a woman.

The woman was tall and slender, with elegant, gentle features. Standing next to Morgan Hayes, they were the perfect illustration of “hard and soft”—a study in contrasts.

Not only did they look like a good match, but more importantly, they seemed very close.

The woman said something that made even the usually stone-faced Morgan Hayes burst into a hearty laugh. As they walked, she reached out and looped her arm through his, and he showed no sign of resistance.

Watching their backs as they walked away, Annabelle felt a stampede of a thousand profanities trample through her mind.

’I take my eyes off him for one week and the bastard already has a girlfriend? So those ten days I spent by his bedside in the hospital were all for nothing?’

Annabelle felt a dark cloud descend upon her, and a suffocating, gloomy feeling instantly enveloped her.

The bouquet of flowers on the passenger seat suddenly seemed utterly ridiculous.

She sat stunned in her car for a moment. Morgan Hayes and the woman were already out of sight. They hadn’t seen her, which was a blessing. Otherwise, she’d feel just as ridiculous as this bouquet.

Annabelle got out, tossed the flowers into a trash can, then started the car and drove away.

As she reached the intersection, she saw Morgan Hayes and the woman again. They were walking out of the market, carrying a plastic bag filled with seafood.

Watching them chat and laugh together, Annabelle clung to one last sliver of hope. She snapped a picture of the two of them and sent it to Levi Quinn.

“Officer Quinn, quick question for you. Who’s the beautiful woman with Officer Hayes?”

Levi Quinn replied quickly, “That’s our chief’s daughter.”
