Grey continued with telling them about his terrible experience the night before. He explained how Dorian had ambushed him and how the mythical creature under Dorian’s control had invaded his mind, reading all his secrets.
He told them about Dorian’s threats to go public with everything or to share the information with the family heads. However, Grey carefully left out the parts about Liam and USOV’s involvement in the kidnapping of Liam’s sister, Yaela.
“I knew something was different about him!” Selene said, remembering their near-clash with Dorian a few days earlier.
“You’re absolutely certain he called the creature a djinn?” Nacht asked, wanting to make sure he had heard correctly.
“Yes, I heard him clearly. I’m still waiting for my guys to give me concrete information about this creature,” Grey replied.
“Hmm. That’s a serious problem,” Nacht said, his face showing deep concern.
“You know what they are?” Grey asked.
Even Selene turned her full attention to Nacht, eager to learn about this mysterious creature.
“Yes, and what little I know about them comes from centuries ago, long before we came to this realm,” Nacht explained. “They are wish-granting creatures, and even a family head would want to get their hands on one. But they were also the rarest things you could ever see, even in the divine realm.”
“Wish-granting?” Grey repeated, trying to understand the implications.
“Yes, they can grant any desires you ask of them. But what confuses me is the way you described Dorian using it. To attack you like that and read your mind, I’ve never heard of a djinn being used that way. Although, to be fair, I’ve never actually seen one myself, and until now I thought they were nothing more than old stories,” Nacht admitted.
“So we don’t really know what we’re dealing with, except that it grants wishes?” Selene asked.
Nacht nodded with a grim expression on his face, and Grey said, “That’s very disturbing.”
“I would hate to see this city endangered again, so I think we need to get him out of here,” Nacht said.
“We can’t just chase him away like we did last time,” Grey said in a dark tone. “We need to have Dorian eliminated. Permanently.”
Selene and Nacht both understood exactly what Grey meant. They looked at each other, then back at Grey, and nodded their heads in agreement.
…
Shortly After Kent stepped into the Director’s office just as Grey was walking back to his desk. Nacht and Selene had left only minutes earlier.
“Sir, we might have more problems,” Kent said, there was worry clear in his voice.
Grey let out a tired sigh and sat down in his chair. “When aren’t there problems?” he replied.
“Lucy and Grimmface were spotted at Detroit Metro Airport today,” Kent reported.
“Damn it!” Grey shouted, slamming his hand on the desk. “He’s gathering his old team back together.”
“Sir, this might be exactly like three years ago all over again,” Kent said, voicing the same fear that Grey was already thinking about.
“I didn’t think he’d be able to move this quickly,” Grey admitted.
“How did the meeting with the White Hunters go?” Kent asked.
“We decided to deal with Dorian once and for all, and we planned to do it in three days,” Grey explained. “But the way things are looking right now, we might have to move that timeline up.”
Kent nodded in understanding of what was decided. Grey then said, “Keep tracking how many of his former team members come back to Michigan,” while scrolling through his phone contacts until he found the name “Lucien.” He clicked on it.
The phone started ringing, and Grey held up his index finger to Kent, asking for a moment of silence. The call connected, and Grey began speaking. “Hello Lucien, we have a serious problem…”
…
In the training facility, Liam sat scrolling through his phone while the members of Team C practiced their combat skills.
His face showed clear frustration as he searched for something specific.
“Nope…” he muttered.
“Not that one…”
“One thousand whole chapters? Are you kidding me right now?”
Brian noticed Liam’s frustrated comments and turned towards him out of curiosity. “Is something wrong?”
Liam turned back toward Brian with an awkward expression, knowing what he was about to say would sound strange. “I’m looking for any story, preferably a short one, that has a dragon in it.”
Brian looked surprised for a moment because that was definitely a weird request coming from Liam. However, for Liam, this wasn’t just a random interest. Embedded in him was Helda’s soul, and with it came her special ability— “Book of Stories.”
This power worked much better depending on how many stories Liam had actually read, and honestly, he was seriously lacking in that area.
How was he supposed to summon powerful creatures like Helda if the only story he really knew was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”?
He needed to read more stories, especially ones with dragons and other powerful beings like the ones Helda used, if he wanted to use this ability properly.
But finding good, short stories was proving to be much harder than he had expected.
“I didn’t take you for someone who likes books.” Brian said
“I don’t, it’s just… ugh, forget it,” Liam replied, clearly embarrassed about the whole book situation.
“The Hobbit,” Brian said simply. “It has dwarves, a dragon, and it’s about nineteen chapters.”
“Nineteen chapters? Okay, that’s doable,” Liam replied, relieved compared to the earlier story he’d found that had over a thousand chapters.
Then immediately, he turned his attention back to his phone, tapping the screen to search for the story so he could start reading.
Brian kept watching him for a moment, genuinely curious about what Liam actually wanted with a dragon story. “It’s getting harder to figure this human out,” Brian thought to himself.
“Maybe that descendant of mine was just crazy to think this human was like us. Sure, he’s very powerful, and there aren’t many people with abilities as interesting as his, but there’s nothing godlike about him.”
Brian let out a quiet sigh, then continued his thoughts as he looked across the training room. He watched Team C practicing their combat skills, observing their movements and techniques.
“But it’s fun watching these humans. They really are the most interesting species I’ve ever encountered.”
