Chapter 49: The True Hero
The battle with the monster concluded, swiftly too given Liam’s subtle intervention that helped neutralize the threat. One of the visors, likely the team leader, who had taken note of Liam’s help during the evacuation, approached him. Liam stood near Team C’s vehicle surrounded by his friends.
“Thank you for earlier,” the visor said, extending his hand toward Liam with genuine gratitude. He was clearly referring to both the evacuation assistance and the dramatic mid-air vehicle rescue. Liam nodded silently and returned the handshake gently
“And thanks to all of you at USOV for coming to help with the evacuation,” the visor continued, addressing the entire team before rejoining his squad. The insignia on his uniform marked him as a visor from the Grey Mambas faction.
As USOV agents began dispersing back to their vehicles, Elaine surveyed the now-peaceful scene. “Looks like our job here is done.”
…
The convoy of SUVs returned to the USOV facility one by one, with the day’s mission accomplished without casualties. The remainder of the day passed lazily—no additional breaches surfaced after the earlier incident, leaving agents free to occupy themselves throughout the facility’s various areas: some in lobbies, others in the cafeteria, the training rooms, or simply handling their tasks wherever required.
Team C, along with Liam, spent most of their time in one of the training rooms, but eventually, the day drew to a close for the siblings.
“Alright, Yae, you’ve overstayed your welcome,” Liam announced, his tone carrying an edge of mock hostility. “We need to go home.”
“Ooouuu, someone’s feeling hostile for sure,” Sarah retorted without looking up from her device, likely scrolling through TikTok again.
“Finally!” Amir suddenly exclaimed, his face lighting up with triumph as he stared at his laptop screen. The sudden outburst drew curious stares from everyone in the room, and as he looked up to see everyone’s attention, on him, he gave an awkward smile and said, “Sorry, guys. I’ve been trying to recover my parents’ website since it got hacked.”
Liam raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised. “Didn’t take you for the tech guy.”
“A Master’s degree in computer science has to count for something, you know,” Amir replied with evident pride.
Liam couldn’t really relate to academic achievements given that he dropped out long ago and had never looked back. His attention shifted back to Yaela as he stood up from the ottoman stool he’d been occupying.
“Yae, we’re going,” he said, moving toward the exit with slow steps.
Yae sighed in disappointment, clearly reluctant to end her first real glimpse into the world of USOV agents. Elaine offered her an encouraging smile. “You know some basics now, so you’ll be fine. Come around whenever you can.”
Yaela nodded gratefully. “Thank you for today,” she said before following Liam toward the exit. A few paces later, they crossed the lobby and headed out through the main entrance.
Liam then gently pulled Yaela into his arms, levitated off the ground, and took flight. Within minutes, they were back home, and Liam set Yaela down gently, after which she walked steadily back into the house with him following behind.
After closing the door, Yaela headed upstairs. “I’ll be downstairs soon to make meatloaf,” she called over her shoulder, knowing they were both hungry after the long day.
Liam however had already made his way to the kitchen, pulling some snacks and a juice pack from the fridge to tide himself over. Settling onto the sofa in the living room, he decided it was time to check something he’d been anticipating all day—his stats window. The confrontation with Clive had earned him some points, and he wanted to allocate them strategically.

“Hmm, level 4.45. Not bad,” he muttered to himself, then proceeded to distribute his available points. He assigned 5 stat points to STR, 5 to AGI, 4 to CS, and the remaining 3 to PRC.
[STR 80 → 85]
[AGI 65 → 70]
[CS 46 → 50]
[PRC 41 → 44]
Now, it was time to finally use the skill upgrade token, as he had left it unused for a while.
[Skill Upgrade Token → Lets player upgrade a skill of choice]
“Now what skill should I upgrade?” he whispered to himself, considering his options.
“Sovereign Hands has been useful lately, though…” However his attention shifted to Unity Weaving, and his eyes lit up with possibility. “Hmm…” he muttered, then made his decision.
“You know what?” He clicked on the Unity Weaving skill and a system prompt appeared:
[Do you want to Upgrade the Skill → Unity Weaving]
[Yes/No]
He clicked on [Yes], and a new prompt materialized:
[Unity Weaving upgraded to Lv2]
[Upgrades]:
-Player can share the skills and attributes of his summons amongst themselves
-Player is now able to use a skill being shared at the same time
“Holy shit!” Liam exclaimed, his mind immediately racing with possibilities. First, he envisioned Ragnar roaring out an ice blast, borrowed from Lazark, then pictured Lazark soaring through the air with Pip’s wings.
The combinations seemed endless, each more interesting than the last. Liam already lost himself in the daydream for several minutes before finally snapping back to reality.
“Boy, am I glad I chose Unity Weaving upgrade instead,” he said to himself with satisfaction. His attention drifted to his inventory, specifically to the axe he’d acquired from killing Ray Hooks. He still hadn’t given it a name, and after a moment’s consideration, decided to leave it nameless.
However, he took another look at its specifications:
[ITEM]
-Name:???
-Item Class: ???
-Type: Axe
[STATS]
-Attack Power: +40
-Attack Description: Weapon unlocks special effect when supercharged with solar or heat energy.
“Hmm…” was all he said, filing away the information for future consideration.
“Is everything okay?” Yaela’s voice startled him back to reality. She stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking genuinely concerned as she watched her brother staring into space and making strange hand gestures.
“Oh, yes, yes, everything’s fine,” Liam replied quickly, realizing how odd he must have appeared.
Yae gave him a skeptical look and shook her head before continuing into the kitchen. “Won’t you get changed and get ready for dinner?” she asked while rummaging through the fridge.
Liam sighed, suddenly aware that he’d been so engrossed in the system interface that he hadn’t even gone upstairs to change out of his mission clothes. With a slight shake of his head at his own absent-mindedness, he made his way upstairs to prepare for what promised to be a well-deserved meal.
