Chapter 64: An Assembly
The next day came and Liam prepared for what would be his first mission against one of the Thirteen Families. This was more than just a special assignment, it was his first concrete step toward fulfilling his promise to bring them down.
The weight of that commitment settled on his shoulders as he adjusted his suit and stepped out of his apartment, with Lightning already coursing through his body, and in an instant, he vanished in a brilliant flash.
Minutes later, Liam materialized at the main premises of USOV, where two black Chevrolet SUVs were parked near the exit gates. Quinn and the strike team had already assembled, their vehicles positioned side by side. As Liam approached, he recognized members of the legendary Elite Team A among the group: Jin Suho, Amira Dane, and Kevin Grant.
“You kept us waiting, Liam,” Quinn said, his voice carrying this tone of controlled irritation beneath an expressionless mask.
“My apologies,” Liam replied, but before he could say more, Jin Suho stepped forward. The leader of Team A, an S-tier visor with a reputation that preceded him, extended his hand toward Liam. “Good to be working with you, Special Agent Liam,” Jin Suho said, his voice carrying genuine respect.
Liam’s recent feats had not gone unnoticed. Asides some of it, rumors or otherwise, being on the internet, it was also what most of USOV’s field agents ever talked about these days. Team A itself operated differently from the other units at USOV.
They were the special forces in a way—deployed only on the most critical assignments that usually revolved around efforts against the Families, and often working directly with Quinn on missions that required their unique expertise.
Liam returned the handshake with a firm nod. He wasn’t particularly familiar with Team A’s members, but he could tell they were part of this strike force against the Quillforte family branch, and that was all that mattered.
“Let’s head out,” Quinn commanded, making a rotating gesture with her index fingers, and the agents immediately split between the two SUVs—Team A taking the rear vehicle while Quinn and Liam shared the lead. The convoy rolled through USOV’s gates, heading toward Detroit Metro Airport.
…
The drive to the airport passed in focused silence, each agent was lost in their own pre-mission thoughts. When they arrived, their vehicles bypassed the main terminals entirely, instead driving to a secluded corner of the tarmac where their transportation awaited.
It was a sleek silver and white private jet sat gleaming in the morning’s sunlight, with its passenger door open and stairs deployed. The airport officials flanked the entrance, as it was under their usual protocol, ensuring no interruptions to the departure process.
The strike team filed out of their SUVs and approached the aircraft, as each agent nodded respectfully to the officials, who returned the gesture as the team boarded. The jet’s interior spoke of understated luxury, it had sophisticated dark tones bathed in warm ambient lighting, plush leather seating in rich charcoal, and individual captain’s chairs arranged alongside a luxurious sofa.
Elegant LED strips traced the ceiling’s contours, while polished wood surfaces with golden accents complemented the sumptuous materials. Multiple windows lined each side of the cabin, offering expansive views of the tarmac.
Liam settled into one of the captain’s chairs, finding himself facing Quinn, who had taken the seat directly opposite. The rest of the team dispersed throughout the cabin, each choosing their preferred spot for the flight ahead.
Minutes passed in anticipation, as the engines remained silent. Liam who had noticed the unusual delay and leaned forward toward Quinn and asked, “Who are we waiting for?”
As if summoned by his question, a black 2025 Range Rover SUV approached the jet across the tarmac, and Quinn pointed toward the vehicle as it completed its parking maneuver.
“There,” Quinn said simply. Liam’s attention shifted accordingly as he watched a figure emerge from the Range Rover’s backseat. The man had shoulder-length tousled dark hair, partially tied back with messy strands framing his face. A prominent diagonal scar cut across his features, giving him a distinctly dangerous appearance.
He wore an unbuttoned olive green shirt that revealed elaborate ornate tattoos covering his chest and arms in intricate decorative patterns. Liam’s eyes widened in recognition. “Isn’t that—?” “Yes,”
Quinn interrupted before the question could be completed. “Nacht, President of the White Hunters.”
Nacht himself boarded the aircraft, with a katana in its scabbard gripped firmly in his right hand. Up close, Liam could make out the details of the tattoo on his chest— It was a wolf’s head with an open mouth showing fangs, contained within a rough circular border, with a sword pierced vertically through the center of the design. This was the insignia of the White Hunters, permanently tattooed onto their leader’s flesh.
“Greetings, all,” Nacht said in his characteristically deep tone. His gaze swept the cabin before settling on Liam with sharp intensity. “Are you Agent Liam?” he asked, wanting to confirm his identification.
“Yes,” Liam replied simply. Nacht’s expression softened slightly. “You helped Tim out. Thank you.” Liam acknowledged the gratitude with a nod, and Nacht took his seat among the empty chairs to the side.
The aircraft’s stairs then retracted, as the pilot taxied the jet toward the runway, and within minutes, they were airborne, climbing into the morning sky with Ohio as their destination. As the landscape rolled by beneath them, Liam found himself reflecting on the mission’s dynamics—It makes perfect sense why the White Hunters maintain cordial relations with USOV, he thought. The alliance between the two organizations had always been pragmatic, built on mutual respect and shared interests.
Nacht held rank 6051, though lower than the Top-Ranked, Selene Marquis, but still formidable in his own right. As faction president of what many considered the most powerful organization in Michigan, he commanded both respect and fear from rival factions across the region, and his presence on this mission spoke volumes about the mission’s importance or the threats behind it.
The flight to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport passed without incident, and upon landing, their aircraft was directed to a secluded area far from the regular passenger terminals, where three SUVs waited in perfect formation near the tarmac.
The assembled team disembarked from the jets, walking downwards to the waiting Vehicles. As they approached, Quinn lingered to speak with one of the suited personnel who had driven the SUVs to collect them.
“Director Garene informed us that we have nice suites ready,” the personnel reported with a sort of courtesy. Quinn nodded his acknowledgment before settling into the backseat of one of the vehicles, while the driver took his position behind the wheel, and moments later, all three SUVs, with their windows tinted, rolled away from the airport premises.
