“Ayaka, wait.”

Akira’s voice cut through the chaos as he pushed through the crowd streaming out of the gym.

She had slipped away while the SPIU agents were still setting up their perimeter, and he’d watched her head toward the stairwell leading to the roof.

He found her there, leaning against the railing with both hands gripping the metal so hard her knuckles were white. Her crimson eyes were unfocused, staring out at nothing, and her breathing came in short, rapid gasps.

“Ayaka,” Akira said again, approaching carefully. “Are you okay?”

She didn’t turn around. “Do I look okay?”

Now that he was closer, Akira could see the signs clearly.

Her skin was flushed and sweaty on her neck and collarbone. Her aura, which was usually calm and controlled, was flickering all around her. Red energy pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat, and every few seconds, it spiked, like she was trying to suppress it.

“The energy you absorbed,” Akira realized. “It’s too much.”

“Brilliant deduction.” Ayaka finally turned to face him, and Akira saw genuine desperation in her eyes. “I absorbed lust essence from at least a hundred people while maintaining those barriers. It’s coursing through me like acid, Akira. I can barely think straight.”

“What happens if she doesn’t?” Akira thought back.

“Best case? She passes out and sleeps for three days. Worst case? She loses control and starts feeding on everyone around her indiscriminately. And trust me, a corrupted succubbus feeding frenzy is not something you want in a school full of teenagers.”

Akira stepped closer to Ayaka. “What do you need?”

“You,” she said bluntly, her eyes locking onto his. “I need you. Your essence, your touch, your…” She stopped herself, biting her lip hard enough to draw blood. “I’m sorry. This is inappropriate. You just saved seven people, fought a conceptual entity, and I’m here being selfish about my own discomfort.”

“It’s not selfish if it’s an emergency,” Akira said.

He reached out and touched her hand. The moment their skin made contact, he felt it… the roiling mass of corrupted lust essence inside her, pressing against her control like water against a cracking dam.

Ayaka’s eyes fluttered closed, and she leaned into the contact, a soft sound escaping her throat. “That helps. Just a little, but it helps.”

“We can do more than a little,” Akira started to say, but footsteps on the stairs interrupted him.

Rina stumbled onto the roof, her violet aura crackling around her like lightning about to strike. Her bunny girl costume was dishevelled, and her face was flushed even darker than Ayaka’s.

The moment she saw Akira, relief and desperation mixed on her features.

“Akira,” she gasped, nearly falling. He caught her, and she clutched his shirt with trembling hands. “I can’t… I absorbed so much. Too much. It’s burning inside me, and I can’t control it, and I’m so scared I’m going to hurt someone.”

Her violet aura flared, and Akira felt the raw power radiating from her.

Rina had absorbed almost as much lust essence as Ayaka, and unlike Ayaka, who had years of experience managing demonic energy, Rina was a fledgling. She had no framework for containing this much power.

“Both of them?” Akira mentally screamed.

“Darling, you certainly know how to complicate your life.”

“I’m just saying, you now have two overstimulated demons who need essence purification, a SPIU investigation happening downstairs, and a traumatized artist who was just used as a battery for a demon dimension. Your time management skills are about to be tested.”

Akira looked between Ayaka and Rina. Both were in genuine distress, both needed help, and he couldn’t exactly handle this on the school roof with SPIU agents three floors below.

“We need to get you both somewhere private,” Akira said. “Can you hold on for another hour? Just until the SPIU finishes their investigation and leaves?”

“I can try,” Ayaka said through gritted teeth. “But I’m not making promises.”

“I don’t think I can,” Rina admitted, her aura pulsing more erratically. “Akira, it hurts. Everything is too sensitive, too intense. Even the air touching my skin feels like…” She cut herself off, embarrassed.

“Okay,” Akira made a decision. “Ayaka, Rina, you two might have to go home.”

Rina nodded. “I think Mei-san mentioned going to see some contractors.”

“Good. Then we’ll…”

“Kanzaki-kun.”

The three of them froze. Standing in the doorway of the stairwell was Ayame Shinomiya. She was still wearing the jacket they lent her, and her dark eyes were staring at Akira with an intensity that made him feel uneasy.

“We need to talk,” she said quietly. “Now.”

Ayaka and Rina tensed, both moving subtly to flank Akira. But he held up a hand, stopping them.

“Give me five minutes,” he said to the two overstimulated girls. “Can you manage that?”

“Barely,” Rina said.

“Go,” Akira told them. “I’ll handle this.”

They left reluctantly, Ayaka supporting Rina as they headed down the stairs on the opposite side of the roof access. Once they were gone, Akira turned his full attention to Ayame.

“You saw something inside the painting,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

“I saw everything,” Ayame replied, stepping fully onto the roof and letting the door close behind her. “When you were transforming the Hollow Woods, when you were rewriting reality itself, I saw your true form. Just for a moment, but it was enough.”

“And what did you see?”

“A Demon Lord.” Her voice was steady, but Akira could see fear in her eyes. “Not a contracted demon. Not a possessed human. A true Demon Lord with power that rivals the Queens themselves.” She took a shaky breath. “The Silver Hand trained me to recognize supernatural entities, Kanzaki. I know what you are.”

“I should,” Ayame said. “Everything in my training, everything in my oath to the Silver Hand says I should call this in immediately. An unregistered Demon Lord operating in a civilian population is an Alpha-level threat. They’d send a full strike team.”

“But?”

“But you saved my life. You saved seven lives. And when you freed me from that paint web, when the Muse was whispering in my ear about power and worship and everything I’ve spent years suppressing…”

She looked away.

“You didn’t take advantage. A real demon would have used that moment to corrupt me, to bind me, to add me to their collection. But you didn’t.”

Akira made his choice.

He activated the skill, channelling essence through his eyes. Golden light flared briefly, and he saw Ayame’s pupils dilate as the power took hold.

“What are you…” she started to say, but the words slurred, becoming confused.

Akira was very careful as he erased her memory. He took away her knowledge of his demon form, her understanding of what he really was, and the memories of seeing him change in the Hollow Woods.

But he left all the other memories alone… being captured, being saved, and the thanks and relief she felt when he’d freed her.

The skill worked differently than it had with Rina months ago. This time, there was resistance. Something in Ayame fought against the memory being erased, but eventually gave in.

The golden light faded. Ayame blinked, looking confused and disoriented.

“I… what were we talking about?” she asked, one hand going to her temple. “I remember you pulling me out of the painting, and then everything gets fuzzy.”

“Shock,” Akira said smoothly. “I don’t know most of what happened too, but I remember you were in trouble and I had to help. Your mind is probably protecting itself by blocking out some of the trauma.”

“That must be it.” But Ayame was looking at him strangely, her hand drifting unconsciously to her chest, right over her heart. “Kanzaki-kun… thank you. For saving me. I don’t know why, but I feel like I owe you more than just my life. Like there’s something important I’m forgetting, but…” She shook her head. “Never mind. I should get back downstairs.”

She headed for the stairs, then paused at the doorway. “Be careful, Akira.”

Then she was gone, leaving Akira alone on the roof.

“That was risky,” Ai said. “The pink thread formed even through the memory wipe. She’s going to be confused about why she feels so drawn to you.”

“Better confused than hunting me,” Akira replied. He started for the stairs, his mind already moving to the next crisis. Rina and Ayaka needed help, and soon.

But he only made it halfway down before he nearly collided with Satomi-sensei on the landing.

“Kanzaki-kun,” Her succubus nature was no longer hidden now that they were alone. Pink energy swirled subtly around her form. “We need to talk. Privately… Now!”
