Chapter 163: Valerius Ashford II...
Chapter 163: Valerius Ashford II…
The morning street was still quiet. Valerius moved at a comfortable pace; his hands were in his pockets like a man taking a Sunday stroll through a city he’d already decided belonged to him.
He wasn’t wrong about the energy of it.
“His essence depth is considerable,” Ai said quietly. “I can’t fully scope it without a direct scan, but the layers I’m reading are old. Not Lilithia old, but centuries, minimum. He’s learned how to compress it so it reads smaller than it is.”
“He’s showing me less than he has.”
“That’s the polite version of a threat. Like a man putting his hand near his pocket without reaching into it.”
“Five years,” Valerius started without preamble. “I’ve been operating in this city for five years. Clean setup, good infrastructure, carefully managed relationships with the SPIU and the local Silver Hand Chapter. Nothing hostile, we just… don’t bother each other.”
He glanced sideways at Akira. “Then you appear, and in roughly four months you’ve killed a Lilithia Fragment, cleared multiple Gates, built a bonded harem that includes a succubus instructor and two student-class entities, and last night your energy signature lit up like a signal flare over the entire eastern district.”
“Not my problem,” Akira said.
“It is now.” Valerius stopped at a low railing along the side of a small park and leaned against it, unhurried. “The SPIU flagged the festival incident. The Silver Hand has an active file on the Gates you’ve been clearing… they don’t know it’s you yet, but it won’t take long. And the demon lords in the underworld?”
He paused. “They talk, Akira-kun. You killed something that carried the Queen’s bloodline. That news traveled.”
Akira stood across from him, arms loose at his sides. “So everyone’s watching.”
“Everyone who matters.” Valerius tilted his head slightly. “You’ve been making noise in a world where noise gets you killed. I thought you should hear that from someone who’s survived it, rather than discover it through a harder lesson.”
His tone sounded genuine, and that… that was the frustrating part. Akira’s instincts weren’t screaming danger; they were murmuring something closer to be careful.
“Perfect Recall is fully active,” Ai said. “But darling, you don’t have Lie Detection in the current kit. Read him the old-fashioned way.”
“Working on it.”
“You said gates are opening faster,” Akira said. “Because of me.”
“Because of your energy signature, yes.” Valerius picked a small piece of lint from his sleeve. “The essence you absorbed and have been carrying, it doesn’t just grant power. It broadcasts it. Every time you utilise it, every essence exchange with a bonded partner… it pings the ley lines. The Gates respond to concentrated supernatural signatures the way a wound responds to infection. You are, functionally, an accelerant.”
That landed harder than Akira wanted it to. He kept his expression still.
“The Gates would have opened anyway,” Valerius continued. “The merge pressure has been building for years. But with you active, the timeline has accelerated by my estimate…” He considered briefly. “Eighteen months, maybe less.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I want to make you an offer.” Valerius reached into his jacket and withdrew a small, matte-black card. There was no name on it, just a number… embossed.
He held it between two fingers. “Work with me. I have resources you don’t… connections in the underworld, a working relationship with two SPIU division heads, and five years of mapped infrastructure in this city. Gate locations, enemy hierarchies, faction politics. I can make your life significantly easier.”
Akira didn’t take the card. “What do you want in return?”
“Entertainment.”
The word was clean and simple.
“Competition. You’re the most interesting thing that’s happened in this city in a decade, and I’ve been bored for most of that decade.” He let the card rest on the railing. “I’m proposing a game. We both pursue our own routes… socially, romantically, supernaturally. Compare results. See who’s better at this.”
“And the stakes.”
“If I win, you get absorbed into my organization. Full alliance; you’d have everything I just offered plus my personal protection. If you win…” He almost smiled. “I’ll leave the city. Take my infrastructure and my interests elsewhere. Clean slate.”
Akira studied him.
The offer was layered and smooth and presented in a way that made the stakes sound almost casual, like a friendly wager between equals.
But underneath it, something didn’t sit right.
The way he constructed his words, the way the losses were framed.
If I win, you get absorbed into my organization versus if you win, I just… leave?
An Incubus Lord who’d spent five years building something didn’t offer to walk away from it for entertainment.
“He’s lying about the motivation,” Ai said carefully. “I can’t tell you exactly what he wants; we’d need a proper scan, but ’entertainment’ is not the real answer. The stakes he’s proposing favor him structurally. Win, he absorbs you. Lose, he relocates. Either outcome gives him what he wants from a different angle.”
“He wants my essence,”
Akira thought. “If I’m under his organization, I’m accessible. If I ’win’ and he leaves the city, he still watched the whole game play out and learned everything about how I operate.”
“That would be my read, yes.”
Akira exhaled through his nose. “I’ll think about it.”
Valerius nodded like he’d expected exactly that. “Don’t think too long.” He picked the card back up and slid it across the railing to Akira’s side. “The game starts Monday whether you formally agree or not. You exist in this city… that’s enough to make you a player.”
“That’s not how games work.”
“It is when someone else already owns the board.” He said it without venom, just the quiet certainty of someone stating geography. “Monday, Akira-kun. Think about whose side of the board you want to be standing on.”
They both remained still, not quite looking at each other. There were a few seconds of silence that wasn’t uncomfortable, but wasn’t hostile either… it was more like the pause before moves.
Then Valerius pushed off the railing. “Enjoy your morning. Give my regards to Ayaka-san and the kunoichi when they wake up.”
He turned and walked back toward the street, unhurried.
Akira watched him go.
And then, one hand on the door of a dark, low-slung sports car parked along the curb… the kind of car that didn’t have a brand sticker because people who needed to ask the brand couldn’t afford it… Valerius paused.
“Oh.” He said it like an afterthought. Like something had just occurred to him. He glanced back over his shoulder. “Your teacher. Satomi Ayase.” A small smile. “She used to work for me. Did you know that?”
Akira kept his face completely still.
“Before she decided to go independent.” Valerius pulled the door open. “Roughly nine years ago. It was… an unpleasant parting.” He settled into the driver’s seat with the ease of someone sitting into their own throne. “Tell her I said hello.”
The door closed.
The engine turned over quietly and the car pulled smoothly away from the curb and disappeared around the corner.
The street was empty.
Akira stood where he was for a long moment, the cool morning air around him and the matte-black card in his hand, and tried to process the last fifteen minutes.
“Darling,” Ai said, after a respectful pause.
“I know.”
“Satomi-sensei worked for him. She’s been in this city for approximately…”
“Nine years, by what he said. She told me she’d been at the school for a while.” He turned the card over in his fingers. No name. Just the number. “She never mentioned she knew Valerius.”
“She mentioned him to you before, actually… the first time you were alone together. She said she recognized the Gate energy signature from years ago. She named him then.”
“She named him as a threat,” Akira said slowly. “She didn’t tell me she used to work for him.”
“No,” Ai agreed. “She didn’t.”
He pocketed the card, headed back to the lobby and picked the bag back up, his mind running through the morning in full-speed reverse: Satomi already awake when he woke up, composed and professional, making tea and offering him advice about Ayaka and Rina… and underneath all of it, there were some piece of information she’d chosen not to share.
Nine years.
Before she decided to go independent.
It was an unpleasant parting.
“Ai.”
“Yes?”
“What’s the system’s read on Satomi-sensei’s affinity right now? Full transparency.”
“Seventy-six, as you know. Experienced interest. Flagged as a genuine potential route… not manipulated, not forced. She’s interested in you on her own terms.”
“But she kept something back.”
“Everyone keeps something back, darling. The question is whether what she kept back changes what she’s given you.”
Akira didn’t answer that. He stood in the lobby for a moment longer, looking at where Valerius’s car had been.
Then he checked the time, grabbed the bag, and started moving.
Ayaka and Rina needed clean clothes. Satomi was waiting. And now he had questions that hadn’t existed an hour ago.
