Chapter 174: In the Park…

They lay together in Aoi’s bed, tangled in sheets that smelled like sweat and sex and something faintly floral from her perfume. The afternoon light had shifted to early evening now, casting long shadows across the room.

The torn canvases and spilled paint were still scattered around them, but somehow it felt less oppressive now… Less like a disaster and more like something they could clean up together.

Aoi was curled against his side, her head resting on his chest, one leg hooked over his thigh. Her breathing had evened out, but he could tell she wasn’t asleep yet. Her fingers were still trauing absent patterns on his stomach.

“Akira,” she said quietly after a long stretch of silence.

“Mm?”

“I saw something. I can’t remember it exactly, but it’s something in my memory.” Her voice was careful, like she was trying to remember something half-forgotten. “I don’t know if its real or my imagination playing tricks on me.”

He stilled. “What did you see?”

“A woman.” She tilted her head up to look at him with distant eyes. “Beautiful. Terrifying. She had this… presence. Like she filled the entire space even though she was just standing there.”

Akira’s chest tightened. “What did she look like?”

“Dark hair. Pale skin. Eyes that glowed pink, but not soft pink. Deep. Like… like looking into something ancient.” Aoi’s fingers stopped moving. “She was calling to someone. Not me. I was just… in the way. She was looking past me, through me, at something behind me.”

“At me,” Akira said quietly.

Aoi nodded. “I think so. She said…” She paused, brow furrowing. “She said, ’He carries my heart. I will reclaim it.’”

The words landed like a physical weight.

“Darling,” Ai’s voice cut in immediately. “That’s not passive essence bleed. That’s active communication. The Fragment isn’t dormant anymore. It’s responding.”

“To what?”

“To you. To your emotional connections. Every time you bond with someone, the Fragment stirs. It’s trying to reconstitute itself through you.”

Akira exhaled slowly, his hand moving to stroke Aoi’s hair. “Did she say anything else?”

“No. That was it. I… I don’t remember much aside from that.” She pressed closer to him. “Do you know who she was?”

“Maybe.” He didn’t want to lie to her, but he also didn’t want to scare her more than she’d already been scared. “I’ll figure it out.”

“Akira.” She looked up at him, her expression serious. “If something’s hunting you… if something dangerous is coming… I want to know. I want to help.”

He kissed the top of her head. “I know. And when the time comes, I’ll tell you everything. But right now, I need you to rest. To recover. Can you do that for me?”

She studied his face for a long moment, then nodded. “Okay. But you promise you’ll tell me?”

“I promise.”

She seemed satisfied with that.

Her eyes drifted closed, her breathing slowing again, and this time she actually started to fall asleep. Her body went soft and heavy against his, her fingers loosening their grip on his skin.

Akira stayed still, watching her sleep, his mind running through what she’d said.

He carries my heart. I will reclaim it.

Akira closed the interface and let his head fall back against the pillow.

So the Fragment wasn’t just a passive power source. It was waking up. Responding to him. To the people he cared about.

His phone buzzed somewhere on the bed.

He reached for it carefully, trying not to wake Aoi, and checked the screen.

One new message from Yuri.

He opened it: Can we meet?

Akira stared at the message for a long moment.

Then he set the phone down, extricated himself carefully from Aoi’s sleeping form, and started getting dressed.

The park was quiet when Akira arrived.

The sun had set fully now; only the dim glow of streetlights came through the trees. The playground equipment made long, angular shadows across the woodchips, and the swings moved slightly in the evening breeze.

Yuki was sitting on one of them… the same swing set they used to occasionally meet at when they were kids, back when the world was simpler and demons were just things in storybooks.

She didn’t look up when he approached. Just kept her eyes on the ground, her hands gripping the chains.

“Yuki,” he said quietly.

She looked up then. Her expression was hard to read; it wasn’t angry, not scared, but something in between. Guarded. Tense.

“You came,” she said.

“You asked me to.”

“I wasn’t sure you would.” She stood up from the swing, arms crossed over her chest. “I wasn’t sure you’d care.”

Akira stopped a few feet away from her. “What do you want to talk about?”

She didn’t answer right away. She just looked at him like she was trying to solve a puzzle she didn’t have all the pieces for.

The silence stayed between them, filled only by the distant hum of traffic and the faint creak of the swing chains.

“She’s processing,” Ai said quietly in his mind. “She’s been thinking about the love hotel. The slime attack. The way you looked at her. The way you saved her.”

“What’s her read?”

“Conflicted. She knows something’s different about you. She felt it when you used your aura to protect her. But she doesn’t have a frame of reference for what that means, so her brain is trying to rationalise it as… something else.”

“Like what?”

“Like feelings. Like chemistry. Like maybe you’ve always had something between you and she’s just now seeing it clearly.”

Akira watched her carefully.

She was biting her lower lip, a habit she’d had since middle school whenever she was trying to figure out how to say something difficult.

Finally, she spoke. “I’ve been thinking about us.”

“Told ya, darling.”

“Okay??? What about us?”

“The shower. The hotel. The way you looked at me after…” She paused, tightening her arms around herself. “Was…” she paused again, as if thinking it over. “Was any of it real?”

The question landed harder than he expected.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…” She took a breath. “You saved me. You were there when I needed you. And for a moment, it felt like… like maybe you saw me. Really saw me. Not just as your childhood friend, but as…”

She trailed off, her cheeks flushing slightly. “But then you pulled away. Again. And I don’t know if I imagined the whole thing or if you actually felt something too.”

Akira felt her words settle over him. She wasn’t asking about demons. She wasn’t asking about the slime or the aura or the way he’d obliterated that thing with a single punch. She was asking if she mattered to him.

And the truth was complicated.

“Be careful,” Ai warned. “You can’t tell her the truth… at least not yet. But if you lie to her now, she’ll feel it. She’s too emotionally attuned to you.”

“I know.”

He took a step closer. “Everything with you was real.”

Her eyes snapped up to his, searching.

“But my life is…” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “Complicated right now. There are things I’m dealing with that I can’t explain. Not because I don’t trust you, but because… it’s not safe for you to know.”

Yuki’s expression tightened. “That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I can give you right now.”

She shook her head. “I’m tired of being treated like I’m fragile, Akira. Everyone does it. My parents. My friends. You.” He could hear the frustration in her voice as she stepped closer and closed the distance between them. “I’m not asking for explanations. I’m not asking you to tell me what’s going on. I’m asking if you want me.”

The question hung in the air between them.

“Because if you don’t,” she continued in a quieter voice now but no less intense, “just say it. I can handle rejection. I’ve handled worse. What I can’t handle is being in limbo. Not knowing if I’m imagining this or if there’s actually something here.”

Akira looked at her, at the girl he’d grown up with, had a crush on from a distance. The girl he knew almost everything about but couldn’t do anything with the information he had. The one who’d looked at him with wide, terrified eyes in that love hotel while a demon attacked her.

The one who, despite everything, was still standing in front of him asking for honesty.

He couldn’t give her the full truth. But he could give her this.

He closed the distance between them in two steps, cupped her face in both hands, and kissed her.

It wasn’t calculated, nor was it prompted by the system. It was just need meeting need.

Yuki made a soft, surprised sound against his mouth, her hands coming up to grip his jacket.

For a second she was frozen, and then she kissed him back… hard and desperately, like she’d been waiting for this for longer than she wanted to admit.

When they finally broke apart, both of them breathing hard, her eyes were wide and her cheeks were flushed.

“That’s my answer,” Akira said quietly.

“Okay.” Her voice was breathless. “Okay.”

Before she could recover from that, he closed the distance and kissed her again, deeper this time, and she melted into him.

Her arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer, and he walked her backward toward the trees at the edge of the park… the secluded area where the streetlights didn’t quite reach.

When her back hit the rough bark of a tree, she gasped into his mouth. He pressed against her, one hand braced on the trunk beside her head, the other sliding down to her waist.

“Akira,” she whispered, her hands fisting in his shirt. “This is crazy. What if someone sees us?”

He kissed along her jaw, down to her neck, feeling her pulse jump beneath his lips. “Then you’ll have to be quiet.”

She made a sound that was half-laugh, half-moan. “That’s not…”

He cut her off with another kiss, harder this time, his hand sliding beneath the hem of her sweater to touch bare skin. She shivered, arching into his touch.

“Still want me to stop?” he murmured against her mouth.

“No,” she breathed. “Don’t stop.”
