- Chapter 332: Thalia Vs. Luke (1)
[Third Person POV]
The golden-bronze feathers, slick and dripping with fresh blood, tore through the air with a sharp whistle as they flew toward Annabeth. Mid-flight they twisted and whipped about, shedding the gore in crimson arcs before settling into a clean gleam once more. One by one they slotted into place along the joints of Annabeth’s bare wings, locking into her frame with a faint metallic snap. Her new wings folded in unison.
Luke’s gaze darted around wildly, the remains monsters began to unravel. Their massive forms crumbled into particles of radiant golden sand, dissolving into the breeze. Yet even as their bodies faded, the aftermath lingered. Their blood—thick, heavy, and too human in color—remained pooled across the polished deck of the cruise ship, streaking the white surface with deep red smears that refused to vanish. The smell of iron filled the air.
Luke staggered, his chest heaving. He lowered his eyes, grimacing at the gaping wound in his stomach. But the flesh began to writhe and pull together. Muscle fibers crawled like serpents, knitting into each other, sealing the cavity with unnatural speed. The hole closed as if it had never existed, leaving only faint scar tissue that shimmered.
He opened his mouth, lips parting to speak—perhaps a curse—but Lucian silenced him with a single raised finger.
“Wait a moment,” Lucian said smoothly, his tone light and unhurried. “Hold that thought.”
The corners of Lucian’s lips curled into a sly, predatory smile as his eyes glimmered. He whispered a single command, a word laced with power:
“Arise.”
The sound seemed to crawl through the air like a living thing. From the mixture of blood and golden sand at their feet, the darkness quivered. Shadows lengthened unnaturally, swelling outward. The pools of darkness twisted, shapes coalescing into nightmarish forms—monsters reborn in shadow. Their jagged limbs and glowing eyes barely had time to take shape before they collapsed again into pools of blackness, melting seamlessly into Lucian’s own shadow at his feet.
“Ahh, magnificent,” Lucian said, “Thank you for the gifts, Luke. You truly are the gift that keeps on giving~” His tone dripped with faux gratitude, yet his expression was unshakably pleased. “I knew sparing you wasn’t a mistake. Look at you—already proving your worth, already helping me build my own army. Their sacrifices…” He clasping his hands together in mock prayer, his voice suddenly reverent, “will not be in vain.”
Annabeth let out a quiet chuckle, her eyes sharp with amusement. Luke, however, glared with a madness brewing just beneath the surface, his jaw clenched.
A crack of thunder split the night.
Thalia appeared in a blinding flash of lightning, her form manifesting before Luke. Her leg shot up with impossible speed, a whipcrack kick aimed straight for his head.
Luke jerked back, the suddenness of the attack catching him off guard. He barely dodged, leaning his head as far back as his neck allowed. Even so, the sheer force of the strike nicked his cheek, slicing it open and drawing a thin line of blood.
“You’re focusing on the wrong person, Luke,” Thalia said, her voice charged with energy, her eyes glowing faintly as power gathered within. “Your opponent… is me.”
“Fine,” Luke growled, fury twisting his features. His hand tightened around the hilt of his blade, and with a shimmer of golden light, ancient armor materialized across his body. Plates of celestial bronze locked into place. His jaw tightened as he lowered into stance. “Earlier, you wanted to see how far I’d go against you, right? I’ll show you firsthand.”
Thalia smirked, her expression brimming with anticipation. “Good. This is going to be fun.”
She crossed one hand over the other, her body alight with storm-born power. One eye sparked with crackling blue lightning, the other shimmered with the verdant glow of the wind. Her dual control over storm and sky bled into form, swirling around her body in a violent spiral. The winds solidified, compressing into a visible, almost metal layer of armor that wrapped around her limbs and chest. A helm formed over her head, strands of her hair flaring out the back, whipped by the storm. Lightning coiled along her gauntlets and legs.
In her left hand, a shield of tightly-woven air condensed into existence, its surface rippling like a translucent echo of her usual shield. In her right, a spear of pure electricity materialized in a burst of searing light.
Luke didn’t wait. He exploded forward like a cannon blast, sword slashing toward her in a lethal arc.
Thalia didn’t resist. She let his blade connect with her shield, allowed the sheer force to launch them both backward—straight off the edge of the cruise ship.
The night air rushed past them, the sea roaring below. They fell like meteors toward the water, Luke pressing forward, his blade grinding against her shield, his strength driving her back. The ocean surface buckled beneath the pressure of their descent, splitting apart before they even touched it.
Luke’s eyes narrowed, his face twisted into a grimace, every muscle straining. Thalia, by contrast, wore an eager grin, eyes blazing with the thrill of the fight.
She twisted her shield, knocking his sword aside and lunged with her spear. But Luke’s blade moved faster than expected, flashing with impossible speed to deflect the attack in a burst of sparks.
Steel and lightning sang against each other.
Luke’s sword wove intricate arcs around him, his mastery undeniable, each parry flowing seamlessly into another. Thalia’s strikes were wild bolts of fury, yet her control of the storm gave them precision and weight, every strike like a thunderclap.
On the deck above, Lucian and Annabeth leaned lazily against the railing, their eyes following the clash below.
The fight was beyond normal vision. Luke and Thalia were moving at speeds that blurred them into streaks of light and shadow. To mortal eyes they were no longer bodies but silhouettes, ribbons of steel and storm dancing across the sea. Every clash sent waves rippling outward, the ocean itself shuddering beneath their battle. The air sizzled with heat, lightning and bronze clashing again and again.
“You know…” Annabeth began, her eyes still following the blur of Luke and Thalia clashing above the waves. She shifted her gaze to Lucian, her lips curving mischievously. “How come you didn’t use that ability back at camp? You know, when your voice goes all dark and ominous and you go—” She dropped her tone into a poor imitation of his deep, commanding growl, “‘Arise…'” She waved her hands dramatically, trying to mimic his flair. “After the battle, you could’ve expanded your little shadow army.”
Lucian turned his head, staring at her blankly for a long moment. His eyes flickered with faint amusement before he casually looked back toward the ongoing fight, arms resting on the railing. “Because I didn’t feel like it. Obviously.”
Annabeth raised an eyebrow, her expression flat as stone. “You completely forgot about it, didn’t you?”
Without even blinking, Lucian replied, “A thousand and ten percent.”
Annabeth just started and snorted, shaking her head.
Lucian scratched his cheek, feigning sheepishness though his smile betrayed him. “What? I was distracted. Luke, Hestia, all that chaos? Forgive me if raising shadow soldiers slipped my mind for half a second. Not to mention, even if I had remembered, I probably would’ve hesitated anyway.”
Annabeth tilted her head, curiosity sharpening her gaze. “Seriously? Why? That doesn’t sound like you.”
“Not sure if you’ve noticed,” Lucian said, “but none of my soldiers are really human. Baba Yaga is the closest, and even she’s… well, Baba Yaga. Definitely not human.”
Annabeth frowned, mentally tallying his collection of shadow minions. Her brows furrowed as realization dawned. “Wait—hold on. Why is that?”
Lucian exhaled slowly through his nose, watching the flickering silhouettes of Luke and Thalia skimming across the water. “Because up until now, we’ve mostly fought monsters. Beasts. Abominations. It works for them. But humans? That’s different. After the camp…” His tone dipped low, “It would’ve been twisted. Imagine forcing the others to watch me resurrect their dead siblings, see them warped into shadows, stripped of who they were, bound to me as eternal slaves. Even I’m not that cruel.”
For a heartbeat, silence stretched between them. Then Annabeth’s lips curled into a smirk, and she burst into laughter. She leaned forward, pressing her forehead against the railing as her shoulders shook with quiet giggles. “I swear… you’re just so freaking weird, Lucian.”
Lucian rolling his eyes dramatically. “Jeez, thanks.”
“No, really.” She tilted her head toward him, still grinning. “I meant that in a good way. You’re one of the most sadistic people I’ve ever met, capable to doing heinous war-crimes if it came down to it. I mean, look at what you’re doing to Luke—you’re tormenting him with every chance you get. And yet…” Her smile softened. “You’re also one of the most compassionate person I know. Sometimes Its like you’ve got two entirely different people living in that head of yours. Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if you were officially diagnosed with Bipolar disorder.”
Lucian blinked at her, deadpan. “…Again, jeez, thanks.”
Annabeth chuckled, leaning her head against his armored shoulder. The cold metal pressed against her skin, but the comfort of his presence outweighed the chill. She closed her eyes briefly, her smile serene. “And again—I meant it in a good way. I love both sides of you.”
Lucian’s lips twitched upward, but instead of a sincere reply he went for mischief. He gasped theatrically, clutching his chest. “Wait, hold on—so you’re saying you love a different version of me? Are you cheating on me with one of my personalities? How dare you, Annabeth!”
She turned her head slowly, giving him a long, incredulous stare as though he’d completely lost his mind. The absurdity of his expression broke the moment, and they both dissolved into soft, stifled chuckles, laughter weaving between them.
“Ughhh.” Nox, sprawled casually across the broken body of one of the bear brothers, jabbed a finger toward his shadowed face, pantomiming a gag. His voice oozed disdain. “Gods, you two seriously need to get a room.” He punctuated the statement by driving a spear of condensed darkness straight through the creature’s skull. The body twitched once, then stilled. “Seriously. Get a room you two.”
“Someone sounds Jealous~” Lucerna sang from the opposite side, crouched before the other bear brother pinned against the railing. She lifted her hand, forming a finger-gun pointed at his chest. Her grin was sly. “You’re just jealous you’ll never find love like that.”
A flare of searing light bloomed at her fingertip, then erupted forward. The burst pierced clean through the beast’s heart, exiting in a dazzling trail that streaked out over the ocean before vanishing with a soft flicker.
“Please.” Nox scoffed, snapping the spear free with a twist. “Like you’d fare any better. I pity whatever poor fool ends up stuck with you.”
…
Far away, on a golden throne beneath the high halls of Olympus, Apollo sneezed—a sharp, almost adorable sound that he quickly muffled with the back of his hand. His face flushed faintly, and he rubbed his nose with a sheepish grin. “Hah, didn’t know Gods could sneeze—guess a pretty lady must be talking about me.”
…
The storm roared overhead. Lightning cracked and danced wildly across the sky, gathering in violent bolts aimed directly at Luke. But Luke only raised his blade, using it as a lightning rod, the metal humming as it attracted the strike. His sword drank the lightning before diverting the massive surge harmlessly into the ocean below.
The surface hissed and steamed.
Luke glared across the storm-swept battlefield at Thalia, his cape-like shawl billowing madly in the wind. His eyes glowed with restrained fury as he lifted his blade again.
